1 MUSIC PLANNER 2 nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 th Sunday of Easter Year C - The Year of Luke 20 th January th May 2019 As we begin this first period of Ordinary Time, a change in the setting of the acclamations and Gloria would emphasise the beginning of a new season. However, in Year C the Gospel continues the message of the Epiphany with the third manifestation of Christ. The long list of suggested music reflects the themes of Marriage, Eucharist and Epiphany, so extra care will be needed in preparing your liturgy. 2 nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (C) 20 th January 2019 The Church rejoices in her Bridegroom who will cherish her, lavish upon her the many gifts of his Spirit, and transform her into a new creation as he transformed water into wine. Perhaps Halle, Halle or one of the many songs based on the Celtic Alleluia. 4

5 The SEASON of LENT As we enter the season of Lent, the dynamics of the Liturgy during Mass changes from Ordinary Time: the Alleluia is not sung, and the Gloria is omitted. We have an opportunity to introduce a different Mass setting; perhaps one that is more considered and reflective, and in keeping with the aspects of Lent. This need not mean having to learn a whole new setting. Many of the liturgical composers have now revised their original Mass settings to accommodate the new texts introduced in You may only need to learn a few adjustments to otherwise familiar settings: Christopher Walker - A New Celtic Liturgy Marty Haugen - Revised Mass of Creation Bernadette Farrell - Mass of Hope (Revised) Paul Inwood - Revised Gathering Mass Useful source books for Lent are: These Forty Days Janet Sullivan Whitaker Wondrous Love - Haugen Resurrexit - Decani Some pieces of music can be used throughout Lent at your discretion e.g. Praise to you O Christ - Farrell Gather Us In - Haugen Guide us O thou great Redeemer Tree of Life Haugen Come back to God (Lent Entrance Song) Foster / Cantate For those following the RCIA programme, the following may be used on more than one occasion: Glory to you, O Word of God - Haas/Ga The Summons - John Bell/WGRG We walk by faith - Laudate Who calls you by name - Haas Lenten Acclamations: Glory and praise to you AK Glory to you, O Word of God - Haas/Ga Praise to you, O Christ - Boulton Smith /MM1 Who calls you by name - Haas Psalms: During Lent the following Common Psalms may be sung in place of the Psalm for the day: Psalm 50 - Have mercy on us Lord, for we have sinned Psalm 90 - Be with me, Lord, in my distress Psalm 129 With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption 5

6 Ash Wednesday 6 th March 2019 Penitence is an essential part of the Christian life, for none of us can measure up to the tremendous vocation that is ours as Christians. We are in constant need of the mercy and forgiveness of God. Today we express this by taking part in an impressive corporate act of penitence and reconciliation, beseeching God for the grace to use with profit the favourable time of preparation for the celebration of Christ s Passover feast. Readings: Joel 2: Psalm 50 2 Corinthians 5:20 6:2 Matthew 6:1-6, Again we keep this solemn fast Ashes Attend and keep this happy fast Be Still and know I am with you Dear Lord and Father of Mankind Deep within From ashes to the living font God to enfold you Guide me O Thou great redeemer Healer of our every ill Hosea (Come back to me) Lord Jesus, think on me Lord, who throughout these forty days My God accept my heart this day O God, you search me Remember, man, that you are dust Return to God There is a longing Though the mountains may fall Turn to me You are mine You are near Psalm 50 Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we have sinned Be merciful, O Lord for we have sinned (Haugen - PCY 1, Ga) Responsorial Psalter N.B. What he did for them he still does for us, in Jesus the Lord who conquered sin and death. Alternatively, if a simple chant setting is used the whole community can sing the psalm together. 6

9 HOLY WEEK Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion (C) 14 th April 2019 On this day the Church celebrates Christ s entrance into Jerusalem to accomplish his paschal mystery. Accordingly, the memorial of this event is included in every Mass, with the procession or the solemn entrance before the principal Mass, with the simple entrance before the other Masses. The solemn entrance (but not the procession) may be repeated before one or other Mass that is usually well attended. Procession Reading: Luke 19:28-40 Mass Readings: Isaiah 50:4-7 Psalm 21 Philippians 2:6-11 Luke 22:14-23:56 Procession of Palms Ideally, you should congregate in a place other than the church. This may be difficult if space is limited or does not easily allow for the movement of people. If this is the case, try to be creative and consider a place where the palms could be blessed that will permit a procession into the church. The following hymns would be suitable to sing during the procession: All Glory Laud and Honour Hail Redeemer, King Divine Laudate Dominum (Taize) Laudate Omnes Gentes (Taize) Laudate, Laudate Dominum (Walker) Palm / Paschal Procession (Walker - L) Ride on, Jesus, ride (Ga) Ride on! 10 The TRIDUUM Holy Thursday (C) 18 th April 2019 Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper Today we celebrate Christ s twofold giving of himself: To his enemies, to die on the cross for the life of the world. He is the paschal victim, whose blood saves his people. To his friends, and disciples, his Church that is, to us in the sacrament of his body and blood. If we want to belong to Christ, we must follow his example of self-giving and of service washing one another s feet. We must be willing and ready to say with Christ, about our own selves : This is my body which is given up for you. The whole purpose of today s liturgy is to enable us to make this self-giving the real motivation for our lives. Readings: Exodus 12:1-8, Psalm Cor. 11:23-26 John13:1-15 Reception of the Oils Oils that were blessed at the Chrism Mass in the Cathedral are presented to the parish. As each oil is brought forward the following may be sung: Reception of the Oils (Schiavone L) Sacrament of Love (A. McLean Decani) Washing of the Feet Any music you play or sing during this rite must sit comfortably with the action. Remember the rite takes precedence over the music.
