YEARS TODAY WE CELEBRATE SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY This year, the Australian Bishops Social Justice Statement is titled: A Place at the Table: Social justice in an ageing society. The Statement celebrates the value and dignity of older people in Australian life. It challenges us to recognise their significant contribution to society and emphasises that this contribution should not be valued in mere economic terms. The Statement calls for justice for those who are most vulnerable and warns about a view of older people as burdensome or dispensable. Then walk to the Botanical Gardens to view the Chocolate Tree in the Glasshouse. Our church will be amongst thousands of churches that complete the 2016 National Church Life Survey (NCLS) in October and November this year. OUR SURVEY WILL TAKE PLACE ON 15/16 OCTOBER AT ALL WEEKEND MASSES. The purpose of the NCLS is to help churches to be more vital and effective. Through the survey our churchgoers will be able to give their thoughts, opinions and experiences of church life. The survey provides valuable feedback that enables leaders at local, regional and national levels to evaluate and plan for the future. After 25 years of experience you can be assured that this Christian mission research with proven academic credibility will lead to practical application in churches. ENCOUNTER Short Course Christian Spirituality: Awakening the Deep Spirituality is central to what it means to be human. This ENCOUNTER course will highlight the meaning of spirituality and how it is understood within the Catholic tradition, including the stages in the spiritual life; the insights and wisdom provided by the Doctors of the Church; and practical skills to encourage and deepen the spiritual life. 3 ANOINTING OF THE SICK QUEEN OF PEACE CHURCH Next Anointing Mass at QOP Church will be at 8.45am, Tuesday 4 October, followed by morning tea. All Welcome! OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY CATHEDRAL Next Anointing Mass at the Cathedral will be at 9.30am, Thursday 20 October, followed by morning tea in the Fr Nulty Room. Anyone going to hospital or anyone who is at home sick and would like to be anointed by one of our priests, please contact the Cathedral Office on VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED: Sunday Morning Tea roster You will only be rostered on once every three months to serve coffee/ tea after 8am or 9.30am Sunday Mass. All supplies provided by parish. Please call the Cathedral Parish Office if you like to help and at which Mass. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to visit the Sick and elderly one Sunday a month at Greenwood Nursing Home, Hinemoa Ave, Normanhurst, and Belvedere Nursing Home. Bus drivers needed for our Sunday morning 9.30am Mass bus service. You will need a LR (light rigid) driver licence and you would be rostered on about once every 4-5 weeks. PARISH LIBRARY The Library is open on the first weekend of the month after each Mass, in the Fr Nulty Room, Waitara. Please return library books on the last Sunday of the month (unless you want to renew the loan) so books will be available for borrowing the following week. CATHEDRAL PIETY STALL Christmas items and new stock have arrived. We have nativity statues, angels, Christmas tree trims and cards. Why not give something different this Christmas? We also have a selection of rosaries, children s bibles, prayer books and other great gifts for First Communion. Gifts for Baptism, Confirmation and Reconciliation available too. 5 Hornsby Cathedral Parish The Memento Book Celebrating 100 Years of Faith in The Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is now complete and will be available for purchase from the parish office at a cost of $10.00 per copy. We thank those who sent in stories sincerely for the contribution you made to this publication and your generosity in sharing your story, your photos and most importantly, your memories. It has been no easy task to edit this 72 page book and keep it truthful, informative, readable and enjoyable. Several submissions covered the same ground as others, these were edited and some stories were shortened due to space available. This is inevitable when preparing any publication and we trust that the result is fair and has remained true to the author s intent. So that the book could be of high print quality, yet still reasonably priced for all, we have limited the book s length and the initial print run to 600 copies. The Memento Book is available from the Piety stall (2nd weekend of the month after all Masses) and from the Cathedral parish office during office hours. Phone: The Editorial Committee
