This newsletter finds us in the midst of a fifty day Easter feast. Long after the egg hunts are finished and the Easter bunny has disappeared and the empty tomb story is a distant memory, we celebrate the post resurrection appearances of the Risen Christ and then His ascension into heaven. It is a season of mystery very, very big mystery one that will probably take our whole lives to comprehend! Alleluia, Christ is Risen. The Lord is Risen indeed! These words begin our services and probably state my two favorite motifs of each Sunday in the Christian year, which are thought of as mini Easter Sundays. Those motifs are big-picture thinking and faith/trust in a loving God. Our spiritual lives are probably one of the last refuges in a culture where we don t have to specialize, where we don t have to justify our thinking and where we don t have to understand every jot and tittle of what is happening in front of us. Rather, the Risen Christ causes us to live with a much, much larger perspective than that. We are called by Christ to a life of wonder, awe, love faith and always taking an extremely large perspective. For me the spiritual life has been one of backing away from an issue, a problem, or a joy and for seeing it from the perspective one of Jesus Christ, who lived, died and rose for us in order to give us new life. Our spiritual lives also cause us to think about approaching our world from a position of trust and faith. We live in a world where institutions, people, professions and even our God are often approached with suspicion, cynicism and dismissal. While God gave us heads to think and reason, God also gave us hearts to love and to perceive and understand. How are these dynamics played out at St. Hubert s? We have been richly blessed with a faith community of big-picture thinkers, and trusting souls. We are given personal and community resources that are meant to be marshalled, used and given to The Glory of God. We are set in one of the most beautiful Eden-ic settings, one that is as ever changing as the river yet as changeless as God s love for each and every one of us! St. Hubert s is a place that is growing: in number, in faith experiences, in Christian practice, and in the realization that together our unity can help us to grow in ways that, even as strong individuals we cannot, without God s help. We reach out in love, in service, in learning about our faith and the world in which God has placed us. We travel from St. Hubert s in proclamation of the mystery AND the truth of the message of Easter resurrection, reminding ourselves and the world that God has a new and abundant life for us this day. In so doing, we echo the message of that first Easter day The Lord has Risen! Faithfully, Dan+

2 Change, New Experience, New Challenge When Donna Lanum, Carla Woodcock and Tom Donelan arrived at Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries early one Sunday morning to cook for Trinity Cathedral s former A Place at the Table they could not get into the building...a Challenge. We drove around to the back and found a side entrance also locked. We went back to the front and there were people going into a church next door and they showed us how to go through their part of the building and get to the LMM kitchen in the back. We walked into a very large commercial kitchen.change and introduced ourselves and announced we were there to help with the cooking for Trinity Cathedral. There were at least 10 people (mostly men) moving about the kitchen kidding and joking with one another and finally we asked what we could do to help..and then it started. We dipped cooked chicken legs in a sauce (looked very spicy but Donna and Carla test tasted it, while Tom laughed, and gave it their nod of approval). We dipped and placed about 200 chicken legs onto stainless steel pans that they would be warmed up in and served from at their final location. We discovered that we were cooking for several homeless shelters plus Trinity Cathedral and a Church on the Westside.about six locations in total. We placed hotdogs on large trays and put them in ovens, large fish filets onto other trays to be baked, took apart frozen fish dinners and separated them into vegies, rice and fish on large trays to also be baked. Then we cut up cakes, sweet rolls and placed them along with cookies on trays for the desserts. The LMM Team stood around at the last and watched us finish up the hot dog trays. Then everything was moved to portable warming ovens and driven to the different sites where the meals would be served. All the food is donated by the Cleveland Food Bank but when the gardens at Trinity are ready to harvest all those fresh vegetables will be added to the mix. We worked as a team at first but then each went to a different task with the others and worked side by side with the LMM Team.New Experience. It was all different from what we have been doing at Trinity for several years. We worked our buns off and when we left, about noon, we were pretty tired but felt that we had done a good job, had fun, and accomplished a great deal. If you would like to join us the next time call Carla at or the church and let us know. We could use more people on our team because it is a much larger kitchen than the one at Trinity. We go for three hours about every six weeks. The next date is June 29. We can car pool if you would like. Bishop s Appeal 2014 We would like to announce that June marks St. Hubert s response to the 2014 Bishops Annual Appeal. The money collected (of which 100% goes to the fund) is gathered together from all parishes and parishioners to be used for a variety of programs. Some is used to help fund positions with small parishes for newly ordained clergy. Some is used for diocesan internships for high school and college students, and to fund mission work in the diocese. A minimum of $100,000 is used by Episcopal Community Services to fund a variety of programs that individual parishes can t fully fund on their own. Among the programs are ones that help to feed the hungry, provide housing for the homeless, obtain medications for the sick, let the aged remain in their homes, and help children learn to read. Jacque Fertick is an ECS representative, so knows how important these programs are. There is a box on the donation form to check if you would like your donation to be designated to the ECS council. If you didn t receive information from the Diocese in the mail, there are forms in a basket in the River Room. We would like to thank those who have donated in the past, and encourage all to consider a donation this year. Vacation Schedules Dan will be gone from St. Hubert s on Sunday July 20 and July 27 th. Denise will be away from July 18 and return on Monday August 4 th. The Lectionary Group will be on summer vacation starting on Thursday July 17 th and begin again on Thursday August 24 th. Holy Cross Service Day September 13, 2014 The Northeast Mission Area Council Holy Cross Service Day committee is exploring a Health or Wellness Fair aimed at families in the Ashtabula area this year. The event will likely be held at St. Peter s, Ashtabula and involve many aspects of health care information and education. If you are interested in helping, please speak to Denise Miller. Watch for more information in future newsletters, the website and social media. 2

3 Proposed Scattering Garden Background Several years ago, a few parishioners asked if it would be possible to create a Scattering Garden or a hallowed spot for the scattering of the cremated remains of loved ones on the grounds of St. Hubert s. During informal conversations, I have brought up this idea since that time, and parishioners responded by encouraging me to proceed. Historically, churches have been places where the dead were buried, and this approach of scattering ashes is a variation on an ancient practice. The Vestry asked last year that I form a Taskforce to consider such a plan, but it was first decided that it would be wise to determine the project s feasibility from a legal standpoint. Now, based upon statutory and regulatory research, and consultation with governmental officials, as well as even some local cemetery operators, it has been concluded that no insurmountable issues exist which would prevent the establishment of a Scattering Garden at St. Hubert s. The Taskforce includes several thoughtful parishioners: Deb Fitzgerald, Roberta Matty, Ann McConnell, Dan Schoonmaker (ex-officio), Ken Suvada, Penny Theis and Stu Theis. This group proposes a very simple and tasteful area of ground cover with plant material consisting possibly of ferns and box wood and a perimeter defined by small stones which will surround the beautiful European Linden tree which is East of the wooden cross at the edge of the patio facing the river. The tree is approximately 20 feet from the Southeast corner of the rector s office. The proposed garden will have a simple bench and a plaque, which will contain a variation of a prayer used to consecrate a grave, taken from The Book of Common Prayer: Oh God, whose blessed Son was laid in a sepulcher in the garden: Bless, we pray, this scattering garden, and grant that those who rest here, may dwell with Christ in paradise, and may come to your heavenly kingdom, through your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. (BCP p.503) Next Steps Early this Summer, the parish will receive a brief presentation of details at Services during announcement time, and members of the Taskforce will be available for discussion afterwards. During this assessment period, your feedback is encouraged and will be very helpful and important to the process! Once all details are finalized, the Vestry will vote on the adoption and implementation of the proposal. Details will include items such as consent forms to be completed by those making funeral arrangements, the cost of scattering, guidelines for use and maintenance of the garden and the purchase of a book of commemoration which will contain the names of those whose remains have been placed in the garden. If the proposal is adopted, it may then require presentation formality to the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Ohio. The project is targeted to be completed for a dedication on The Feast of All Saints Day which will be celebrated November 2, Conclusion As your priest, I have been so impressed by all the efforts of two successive Vestries and the thoughtful work of the Taskforce. We all look forward to your participation as well! Vestry Pillar Talk At the May 19 th meeting the Vestry heard from Matt Harrigan, Diocesan Camp and Retreat Ministry Campaign Director, about the different options available for St. Hubert s participation. The vestry will consider the information provided and discuss in June. The Treasurer reported that through April we are +$2,700 actual vs budget Income and - $10,000 actual vs budget Expenses. YTD our Endowments have gained 1.6%. Three funding recommendations by the Building and Grounds committee were considered and approved; east Riverbank extra modifications, west Riverbank survey and engineering, and patio door trim, molding and door jamb replacement. Outreach had requested funding to The Green House women s shelter in Geauga County, and a camp scholarship to The Salvation Army. In Spiritual Growth, an Ad Hoc Music Committee has been formed to look at and perhaps choose new service music for worship. Dan suggested that it may be time for the Vestry to consider a new Strategic Plan for St. Hubert s future. Pentecost: Tongues of Fire on the Fiftieth Day When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them ability. Acts 2:1-4 NRSV Fifty days after Easter and ten days after Christ s 3

4 ascension, Christians celebrate Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit descended to tough the Apostles. Since the third century it has also been celebrated as the birthday of the organized Church. Pentecost was observed by Jews as the Feast of Shavuot, fifty days after Passover, and so the Apostles who were observant Jews had gathered for that feast. Keeping the name of the day for the new celebration of the gift of the Spirit to Christ s followers was a matter of fulfilling prophesies of the Old Testament given by David and Joel. The phenomenon of the Holy Spirit causing all to hear the words of the Apostles in their own languages is generally considered to have been a gift meant to spread the story of the Christ s life and ascension clearly to everyone without translation errors. It is also a sign of the inclusion of all people in the message of the Risen Lord. The Day of Pentecost is one of the seven principal feasts of the church year in the Episcopal Church and is identified as one of the feasts that is "especially appropriate" for baptism. Pentecost has also been known as Whitsun or Whitsunday, a corruption of "White Sunday" due to the wearing of white clothing for baptisms. The liturgical color for the feast is red. The Choir respectfully requests that musical offerings should not be applauded. They would love to hear your praise during coffee hour. They did, however, suggest that throwing money was fine. Annual Family Picnic Sunday, June 8 th following the 10:00 services Hamburgers, hotdogs, buns and beverages provided. Bring a dish to share. Sign up on the sideboard or by calling the church. Summer 2014 Reading! There are two books for our formation that are timely and relate to the season of Pentecost which we will read and meet to discuss this summer. In later June we will discuss Henri Nouwen s Discernment, which delves into the process of hearing God s hopes and dreams for us. As we think about the role of The Holy Spirit in our lives, discerning God s messages for us as individuals and as a community of faith are vital to our spiritual health. Later in August we will discuss a very well received new book by one of our popular authors, Marcus Borg. Entitled, Convictions: How I Learned What Matters Most, the book deals with how the author articulates faith issues such as the role of Scripture, the nature of God and other faith issues this is also a very timely book as we look at the life and ministry of Jesus Christ during the Season of Pentecost. More information concerning times and purchase of books will be available shortly be sure to read This Week at St. Hubert s for further details.
