2 A thorn in the flesh PASTOR S CORNER What is Paul talking about? Some say this was physical illness, bad eyesight, a speech impediment, or some chronic suffering. He is not talking about some little passing problem but rather a painful experience whether physical or spiritual. It was given to him to keep him from getting too elated. Three times he begs the Lord. What does this mean? Did you ever notice the repetition of something three (3) times in the Mass or Readings? For example we say, Holy, Holy, Holy! Why three times? In the English language when we make a comparison we simply add -er or -est. So the word strong, becomes stronger, or strongest. The word loud becomes louder, or loudest. But in some ancient languages they did this simply by the repetition of the word. God is not just holy, or holier, but holiest! Holy, Holy, Holy! So when Paul says he begged God three times to take this away, it means he asked as much as he can. He must have suffered greatly and so he begged over and over and over. But God answers that His grace is sufficient for Paul. And God highlights Paul s weakness - power made perfect in weakness. There is a great spiritual lesson for us here. Each one of us suffers with or struggles with something that we could call our thorn. God s grace is there for us too. In our weakness the power and strength of God can be revealed. God Bless You! - Fr. Pendzick PARISH NEWS Coffee & Doughnuts Please join us in the parish social hall for coffee and doughnuts on Sunday, July 15 th after the 8 am and 9:45 am Masses. It is unknown how long the Court s order will remain in place. I want you to know that the Diocese of Allentown has always cooperated with the Office of the Attorney General and the Grand Jury process. Neither I, nor the Diocese, nor any diocesan official has attempted to block or delay release of the Report. I will be addressing the topic of clergy abuse in more detail after the Grand Jury Report is released. Please join me in praying for the victims and survivors, and for all those hurt by child abuse, wherever it occurs in society. With an assurance of my prayers for you and your families, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Bishop Alfred A. Schlert Diocesan Office: Ms. Wendy S. Krisak M.A. N.C.C.
