On July 6th, the Church celebrates Saint Maria Goretti, a girl only telve, ho is not only venerated as a Saint, but as a martyr as ell. She as born in 1890 to a poor Italian family. Her father as a tenant farmer, ho died malaria hen Maria as very young. From that point onard, her mother had to struggle mightily to feed her children. Maria received no formal education could not read or rite, but ould spend her days taking care her younger brothers hile the adults ere out orking in the fields. Every night, she ould pray the rosary, she quickly gre in spiritual maturity, so much so, that others around her noticed her cheerfulness piety. One the men ho had orked ith her father, Alessro Serenelli, had taken an unholy interest in Maria (ho by all accounts as a very beautiful girl). After having made several attempts to seduce her, all hich she rebuffed, he aited until no one else as home. Then on July 5th 1902, he seized her attempted to force himself upon her. She resisted him crying out: No! It is a sin! God does not ant it! She admonished Alessro, telling him that hat he as doing as on the path to hell. He told her that if she did not submit, that he ould kill her, pulled out a knife. Maria told him that she ould rather die than submit to this sin. At that, Alessro became filled ith rage stabbed her fourteen times. Maria as discovered some time later, bleeding to death. She as rushed to the hospital, but the doctors ere unable to do much for her, because the damage as too extensive. Her final hours ere spent ith her thoughts directed to God others she expressed her concern for her family, elcomed the Lord in the reception Holy Communion. She also forgave her murderer, ansering: Yes, for the love Jesus I forgive him... I ant him to be ith me in Paradise. About tenty-four hours after the attack, Maria Goretti died from her inuries, a martyr for purity. Alessro as captured sentenced to 30 years in prison. Throughout the first eight years his sentence, he remained unrepentant his sins, until one night he had a dream. In that dream, he as visited by Maria Goretti ho smiled at him gave him a bouquet lilies. When he aoke, his heart had been converted. He repented his crime changed his life. When he as released from prison after 27 years, the very first thing he did as seek out Maria s mother to ask for forgiveness, hich she granted. Alessro moved to a Capuchin monastery orked there in the garden as a tertiary for the rest his life. In 1950, Maria Goretti as canonized a Saint; she is the patron saint purity, rape victims, young omen, youth in general. On that day, in Saint Peter square, ith tears in his eyes Alessro as also present, heard as Pope Pius XII raised her to the altars. Much can be learned from her life hat forgiveness ought to look like in our on lives, the value chastity in the midst a very confused orld, courage to st up for the truth, even in the face violent opposition, the absolute necessity prayer in our lives. Saint Maria Goretti pray for us!
