PILGRIMAGE & Along the Path - The Meditator's Companion to the Buddha's Land The Buddha spoke of the benefit of pilgrimage to the four holy places"...there are these four places the sight of which should arouse a sense of urgency or emotion in the faithful (saṃvega). Which four? 'Here the Tath!gata was born' is the first. 'Here the Tathāgata attained the supreme enlightenment' is the second. 'Here the Tathāgata set rolling the wheel of Dhamma' is the third. 'Here the Tathāgata attained the Nibbāna-element without remainder' is the fourth." Samvega- a feeling of urgency, causing one to exert more energy in Bodhi tree, Bodhgaya practice, leading one to develop an upright mind, gain more inspiration in Dhamma, the gladness connected with Dhamma. When one is gladdened, rapture arises, one's body becomes tranquil, and one experiences happiness. For one who is happy, the mind becomes concentrated. The joyful state that permeates the faithful is
2 that of "a calm and bright heart of faith," or "a clear mind of faith." With such a mind, one is in a pilgrim's state of mind. In the highest sense, pilgrimage spots, relics and stupas are less places than they are wholesome states of mind. Yet, one may find so much inspiration by visiting sites connected with the Buddha. Please see a new wiki related to pilgrimage and a recently released guidebook Along the Path - The Meditator's Companion to the Buddha's Land by Kory Goldberg & Michelle Decary BACK IN STOCK: Many titles back in stock with shipments arriving from Motilal Banarsidass in Delhi, and the Pali Text Society in the U.K. Motilal Banarsidass storefront! Pali Text Society books in the Pariyatti warehouse! Also back in stock are Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma and The Path of Purification. Thanks to all who donated for the reprinting of these two classic books! Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma going out into the world. (at left) JATAKAS The Jatakas, one of the books in the Khuddaka Nikaya, contain 547 stories the Buddha told of his previous live as an aspiring bodhisatta, developing the qualities or paramis necessary to be born as a Buddha. Jataka stories are classic Buddhist ethic tales, often witty, and filled with a host of colorful characters: clever monkeys, wise elephants, sharp birds, brave princes, wicked ogres, and the occasional benign tree spirit. Full of deep truths, quaint humor and gentle earnestness, they offer important lessons woven from the threads of virtue and wisdom.
3 Mahakapi Jataka from railing of Bharhut Stupa, 2nd century BCE, Indian Museum, Calcutta Three Jataka books now back in stock- Though used as vehicles of Buddhist ethical teaching, these stories are mostly of secular origin and highlight the moral pitfalls that can befall an individual in everyday life. The stories are purported to be told by the Buddha in various incarnations in human and animal form as the Bodhisattva, related to the events involving the life of the Buddha, his disciples, friends and foes. At the end of each story he identifies the role that he himself played, as well as those of others, particularly his disciples. A great way of not only learning about Indian culture, but also how to keep to that straight and narrow ethical path! The Jatakas were first handed down orally, but growing popularity led them to be eventually put in writing. They offer a dual message, showing the greatness of the Buddha as a bodhisatta developing qualities while enduring various experiences which eventually led him to the realization of enlightenment, and the accessibility of the path and it's openness to all. The Jataka or Stories of the Buddha's Former Births ed. E.B. Cowell & others, in 3 volumes (2 vol each) The definitive and classic compilation containing 537 birth-stories of the Buddha's former lives. Twenty Jataka Tales retold by Noor Inayat Khan "...And while the Buddha sat and all around him listened, these are the stories he told..." These stories tell of people and animals moved to acts of sacrifice by the noble example of their fellow creatures. Ideal for reading to children, they maintain the magical and timeless beauty of their Far Eastern origins, telling of highly dramatic adventures that are resolved by non-violent and compassionate means. Challenging circumstances bring forth courage and the capacity to love, opening the way to solutions against seemingly impossible odds. Lovely illustrations. Jataka Tales by H.T. Francis & E.J. Thomas 114 Jataka tales - those thought to be of most interest from the larger collection. First published in 1916and still containing all the charm and magic from that era. Other great Jataka collections that Pariyatti offers- Ten Jataka Stories - a pali reader by I.B. Horner In this compilation of ten Jatakas with Pali and English side by side, each Jataka illustrates one of the ten paramis that the Buddha was developing. I.B. Horner's intention in this particular work was to provide those with an interest in learning pali with relatively easy reading material. A Treasury of Wise Action Twenty two tales celebrate the power of action motivated by compassion, love and wisdom. They teach that everything we do profoundly affects the quality of our lives. For all but especially for young readers. With simple illustrations. Stories of the Buddha ed C.A.F. Rhys Davids Forty seven tales that offer insight into the heart and mind of the Buddha's teachings. Poignant and humorous tales of wisdom and courage, where the future Buddha appears in a variety of forms such as a king, an outcast, an elephant, always developing some virtue or wholesome quality.
