9 PREFACE. I FEEL that I have to confess to a certain amount of self-interest on each occasion that I print a new volume of the Bibliotheca Lindestana. The subjects are those to which I have lately given the greatest attention, and which prove to be getting out of hand when in manuscript; therefore, I print as an invaluable aid to myself, inasmuch as these several works are themselves Keys or Hand Lists to the General Catalogue of the Library, a work that must proceed slowly, though surely, towards finality. The world of letters is so wide that I have little fear but that each of these Essays may prove of interest to some of my friends and readers though in the present case I fancy that they will be small in number. Other volumes are progressing toward the printing stage : Hand Lists of Oriental Manuscripts ; a second and third volume of the Catalogue of Royal Proclamations ; a Catalogue of English, French, and Italian Broadsides; the latter language comprising some 6,600 items on the Ecclesiastical and Civil History of Rome, mainly of the XVI. and XVII. centuries. All these I intend to print as they become ready, a time I hope not far distant in the case of one or two of them. Mr. Edmond in his Introduction has dealt with the Chinese works as I could not have done. He has, I think, done justice to a department of the Library to which my father gave great attention, and which he always regarded with feelings of satisfaction and pride. HAIGH HALL, May, CRAWFORD.

11 INTRODUCTION. THE collection of Chinese books in the library at Haigh Hall is of considerable extent, the number of pen or native volumes being about It was the design of the late Lord Crawford that the Bibliotheca Lindesiana " should include the best and most valuable books, landmarks of thought and progress, in all cultivated languages, Oriental as well as European." With this object in view he formed with great care the Chinese division of the library, and an examination of the catalogue will show how successful he was in procuring many of the finest editions of the best books in the language. The foundation of the collection was laid by the purchase en bloc of the valuable Chinese library belonging to M. Pierre Leopold Van Alstein, which was sold at Ghent in The books thus acquired were examined, collated and catalogued by the late Mr. John Williams, Secretary of the Royal Astronomical Society, who devoted much time and care to the work. This critical examination revealed a good many imperfections and duplicates, and such defective or superfluous copies were in most cases disposed of, not being considered worthy of a place in the library. To supplement the Van Alstein collection, which roughly speaking forms numbers i to 248 in the progressive " Number Key" to be mentioned later on, Lord Crawford purchased works of value from the library of Pauthier, and also from English, French and German booksellers. In addition to these home operations, an agent was employed in Peking to whom lists of desiderata were furnished, and several rare works were thus acquired. The collection is remarkable for the comparatively trifling number of imperfect works as compared with its extent. It is also

12 X INTRODUCTION. worthy of note that nearly all the books are either in good European bindings, or in the neat tao, or native envelopes of cloth or of silk. The general condition internally is also exceptionally good, and many works may be cited as very beautiful examples of xylography. The Chinese drawings in the library at Haigh form a separate collection in 57 volumes of various sizes and importance, and are not included in this catalogue. The present catalogue has been compiled in great measure from that of Mr. Williams referred to above, but much assistance has been derived from Professor Douglas's Catalogue of Chinese Books in the British Museum. The orthography adopted by both scholars is unfortunately that employed by Dr. Morrison in his Dictionary ; and although it may be the one best suited for English readers, it must in time be displaced by some system in which the vowel sounds are similar in value to those of the continental languages. Acting upon Professor Douglas's advice, the orthography adopted by Sir Thomas Wade for the Peking dialect in his elementary handbook known as the Tzu Erh Chi has been used in the present catalogue. To ensure uniformity of treatment every character has been looked up in Giles's Chinese English Dictionary in which Wade's orthography is given. A few words are necessary regarding the system of cataloguing. The titles of the works, and the names of authors and editors, form one alphabetical sequence. The chief entry of each work is by its title, which is transliterated, followed by a translation or short explanation of the title or character of the work, the author's or editor's name, the number of volumes, the size in millimetres and the date when known. Where the work is in manuscript, or produced by some process other than xylography, care has been taken to draw attention to the fact. The author's or editor's names with a reference to the title of the book form the majority of the cross entries. A " Number Key " is appended to the catalogue, in which the titles of the works in Chinese characters are printed in progressive order, the numbers in front of the entries in the catalogue corresponding with

13 INTRODUCTION. xi those in the " Key." Where numbers are missed in the " Key " the Chinese titles are unknown, or the books have no titles in Chinese characters, or, again, the blanks may indicate where books have been rejected from the Van Alstein collection as stated above. A number of Manchu books and two or three in the Corean language have been included in this catalogue. The titles of those in Manchu are transliterated in Roman letter, being taken for the most part from the sale catalogue of Klaproth's library ; the Corean books happily had explanatory titles in Chinese. This should be looked upon as a brief hand-list or preparatory study, rather than a catalogue worthy of the importance of the collection. Very little has been attempted in analysing the polygraphs for which Chinese literature is so famous. Then, too, there are points of interest connected with many of the books, such as provenance, autograph notes by men of reputation such as Remusat, Klaproth and Pauthier, or the exceptional value of the work on account of its rarity and condition all these and many others are worthy of notice in the catalogue, but they would have been out of place in the present essay. The compiler makes no pretension to Chinese scholarship, and it is with diffidence that he offers this handlist for the criticism and revision of Sinologues. In conclusion he would express his gratitude to Professor Douglas for encouragement and kind assistance in overcoming several difficulties, which but for his aid would have been insurmountable, and for reading the proofs of the "Number Key." Thanks are also due to Messrs. Stephen Austin & Sons, Hertford, for their care in printing the " Number Key " from " copy " supplied by the compiler. J. P. EDMOND, Librarian.
