2 2016 Annual Report Dear Friends of Maryknoll Lay Missioners, We are pleased to present MKLM s 2016 Financial Statement, which captures our 2016 operating income and expenses, following its audit by an accredited third party. Our Focus Areas Education and Leadership Training Healthcare and Health Promotion Justice and Peace Faith Formation and Pastoral Care Sustainable Development In addition to this financial overview, we are pleased to highlight some of our many ministries, missioners and the people we serve. Through their ministries, our missioners share the love of Christ deeply and profoundly. Seeking to be the hands of Christ in this world, our missioners make His love known to the poor and marginalized and give them hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Sustaining our missioners so that they can support others will always be our first priority. It is only through the prayers and generosity of our benefactors that we can be all that God calls us to be and we remain extremely grateful for the good gifts they share with us. 3 Our Mission Maryknoll Lay Missioners is a Catholic organization inspired by the mission of Jesus to live and work with poor communities in Africa, Asia and the Americas, responding to basic needs and helping to create a more just and compassionate world. Our Vision We are a lay Catholic community called through baptism to witness the Gospel of Jesus Christ, crossing boundaries of culture, nationality and faith to join our lives with impoverished and oppressed peoples of the earth. With them, we discern the presence of God s Spirit in all creation and in the world s many cultures and religions, and work toward human liberation and interreligious dialogue in Africa, Asia and the Americas. We strive together for justice, peace and fullness of life, and so our ministries are offered in response to the needs of the people with whom we live and work, and with respect for the integrity of all creation. We are nourished by God s revelation in the world around us, in our relationships, and in the Scriptures, as well as by our communal reflection, prayer and Eucharist. We are inspired by the rich tradition of Catholic Social Teaching, and we are grounded in the history and spirit of our Maryknoll mission family. Believing that all people are called to mission, we actively promote the role of laity in global mission while committing ourselves to share this journey in ecclesial teams of priests, sisters, brothers and laity. We challenge unjust structures and systems, seeking transformation of the very powers that create and benefit from the marginalizing of communities, and we commit to becoming a dynamic anti racist organization that reflects the ethnic and cultural richness of the US Catholic Church and the world in this millennium. The life of Jesus compels us to love one another and to create a more just and compassionate world. Even amidst sin, suffering and death, we celebrate the holiness of everyday life and we proclaim the hope of resurrection. 3 We are grateful to the communities who send us, to the people who receive us, and to those whose support makes our work possible. We commit ourselves to accountability to each other, the people with whom we work, and our benefactors.

It was a joyful and spiritual occasion. Marj Humphrey was appointed Director of Missions to oversee our lay missioners and their ministries around the world.

4 2016 Highlights The Class of 2016 Sending Ceremony took place on December 10th, at Annunciation Chapel in Ossining, NY. Joining with Maryknoll Lay Missioners were Maryknoll priests, brothers, and sisters, our friends and supporters, former lay missioners, and family members of the new missioners. It was a joyful and spiritual occasion. Marj Humphrey was appointed Director of Missions to oversee our lay missioners and their ministries around the world. She joined Maryknoll Lay Missioners in 1987 and served in Kenya and South Sudan. Marj became the Africa Area Coordinator (Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan and Middle East) in She transitioned out in 2007 to care for her elderly parents in Spokane, Washington, where she worked as a clinical Physician Assistant. Marj graduated from Gonzaga University with a Bachelor s Degree in Religious Studies and Communications and a Master s Degree in Education. Class of 2016 Sam Stanton, Executive Director of Maryknoll Lay Missioners, was interviewed on Seize the Day, a national radio program hosted by Gus Lloyd on The Catholic Channel (Sirius XM, Channel 129). Sam discussed the charism of Maryknoll Lay Missioners, shared stories of mission, and promoted the call to mission of all who are baptized. Friends Across Borders (FAB) conducted a total of 8 trips. These mission immersion trips to Bolivia, Brazil, Cambodia, Chile, El Salvador, and Tanzania, allow participants to meet our missioners and those they serve. Marj Humphrey 4 U.S. Church Relations, a Mission Outreach Program, enabled our missioners to participate in 107 church date talks throughout the United States representing 94 parishes (the Mission Cooperative Plan) and 13 parishes (Invitational). A Student Loan Repayment Program was established thanks to a generous gift from a special donor. The program enables Maryknoll Lay Missioners to pay up to 100% of eligible candidates monthly student loan payments while they are in mission. The Student Loan Repayment Program is available to all active Maryknoll Lay Missioners during the time they are under contract with MKLM. Sam Stanton

Our missioners share the many skills and talents God gave them in their ministries. Highlights of 2016 ministries include the following. Education and Leadership Training Missioners teach primary, secondary and college students; tutor children and adults in basic literary skills; teach life skills to the disabled; and provide vocational skills training. Understanding various dynamics such as culture, gender, economy, and human rights can broaden perspectives, and create new opportunities for individuals in the communities where our missioners live and serve. As a result, libraries and scholarship programs have been established in El Salvador, Kenya and Tanzania; entrepreneurship programs providing practical training and certifications have been conducted in Kenya, Bolivia, Cambodia and Tanzania; secondary education and music programs have been established in Cambodia; and health and nutrition awareness campaigns have been conducted in El Salvador, Brazil, Bolivia and Tanzania. 2016 Activity Healthcare and Health Promotion A major area of concern for people living in developing countries is the lack of adequate medical care and health resources, especially for the very

7 2016 Activity Healthcare and Health Promotion A major area of concern for people living in developing countries is the lack of adequate medical care and health resources, especially for the very poor, the young and the elderly. Many of our lay missioners provide highly skilled care as doctors, nurses, physical therapists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. They give guidance in helping to build programs and facilities that will have a long lasting, sustainable impact in critically poor communities. Their efforts range from preventative care to treatment of unique conditions. Our missioners offer pre natal and immunization clinics to grow awareness of preventative health practices and sick care from Africa to Asia to the Americas. In Tanzania, Kenya, Cambodia, and Bolivia, our missioners help evaluate the needs of the sick and provide medical care and access to rural patients who otherwise would not receive medical services. In Kenya, our missioners help train local health care workers, and in Brazil, we have a lay missioner who offers wellness training to incarcerated mothers that includes discussions on breastfeeding, care of newborns, prevention/treatment of postpartum depression, baby yoga and massage. 7 Thousands of people living in some of the poorest communities on earth have been helped by the clinics and health care programs and initiatives established by our missioners around the world. 2016 Activity Justice and Peace 8 Many of our missioners work in justice and peace ministries that train leaders in conflict resolution; assist groups working for human rights; promote interreligious

8 2016 Activity Justice and Peace 8 Many of our missioners work in justice and peace ministries that train leaders in conflict resolution; assist groups working for human rights; promote interreligious dialogue; respond to the needs of immigrants; and support local efforts to dismantle racism, classism, and sexism. Some of the lay missioners in Kenya, Brazil, El Salvador and Bolivia work in prison systems and with government leaders, introducing methods of restorative justice that train educators and community and church leaders in violence prevention and practices to resolve interpersonal and group conflicts. Other lay missioners in Brazil, Bolivia and Cambodia assist migrants through difficult processes that include integrating into a new country, navigating bureaucracy and seeking employment across borders, all with the ultimate goal of helping individuals gain financial security, safety, and independence. In working with migrants, our Missioners also help them develop an awareness of human trafficking, which often disguises itself in the form of false hope through fake work opportunities. 2016 Activity Faith Formation and Pastoral Ministry Our lay missioners walk and live with those they serve. By their presence, they offer moments of solidarity and connection to those they accompany.

By their presence, they offer moments of solidarity and connection to those they accompany. Most of the individuals our missioners work with, especially in this ministry, are shunned by society and have no access to services. This typically includes the destitute elderly, the sick and dying, ethnic minorities, those with disabilities, the incarcerated and those without friends or family. Many programs our lay missioners sustain are run in conjunction with the local archdioceses and parishes. Examples include catechism programs in Kenya and Cambodia, Christian Base Communities in El Salvador and programs for street youth and orphans in Kenya and Tanzania. For example, in El Salvador, lay missioners work with rural and urban populations to establish new sustainable agricultural projects including fish farms and income generating programs including a

For example, in El Salvador, lay missioners work with rural and urban populations to establish new sustainable agricultural projects including fish farms and income generating programs including a Soy Project that brings much needed income and affordable nutritional food to mothers, fathers, and families most in need of these services. In Brazil, Maryknoll Lay Missioners initiated an urban garden project, on the grounds of a prison, that benefits and helps to sustain the women incarcerated there.
