University of Northern lowa Re-casting Collective Textual Context Problems in Translating Chinese Classics in the Era of Fragmentation Reading Abstract As Alwin Toffler predicted in 1980s we are now in an era of fragmentation information fragmentation audience fragmentation media fragmentation which adding to the weakening discourse power of the Chinese classics finds a strong trend of fragmentation reading of those ancient texts both at home and abroad putting critical challenges to thick translationthe currently welcome strategy in translating Chinese classics. This paper argues that thick translation tends to be overwhelmed by the collective textual context created by historical Chinese commentators and thus often fails in culture pluralism and forceful wording which are the two key demands of fragmentation reading. Re-casting the collective textual context calls for translators excellence in both literary capacity and more importantly insightful vision for the text s future reading including its fragmented audience fragmented media and eventually fragmented information.
