2 Brief History Civilization first emerged in china in 1700 BC around the Shang period in which the Chinese had hereditary kings, not dynasties of emperors. Dynasties emerged during the Feudal era, after which Confucianism, Taoism and other philosophical schools formed years later, China was unified and begun the first empire. 20 dynasties later, the republic period happened and the Peoples Republic of China was formed.

18 Dujiangyan An irrigation system built to protect the prosperous city of Chengdu from frequent threatening floods

19 Xi an City Wall One of the largest standing military defense systems in the world, it was built in order to fortify the city and unify China.

36 Giant Head of Mao Zedong A tributary statue of a leader overlooking the city where he disovered communism.
