2 NEW RELEASE The Buddhist Text Translation Society The Buddhist Text Translation Society (BTTS) is dedicated to making the principles of the Buddhadharma available to Western readers in a form that can be directly applied to practice. Since 1972, the Society has been publishing English translations of sutras, instructional handbooks on meditation and moral conduct, and biographies. Most of the Society s sutra translations are accompanied by contemporary commentary, based on lectures spoken by Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua. The accurate and faithful translation of the Buddhist Canon into English and other Western languages is one of the primary objectives of the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association (DRBA), the parent organization of the Buddhist Text Translation Society. Such is the teaching of Master Huineng ( ), the most important and most revered figure in the Chan (Zen) School of East Asian Buddhism. Huineng left no written record, but his students compiled accounts of his public lectures and one-on-one exchanges, together with the dramatic story of his life. The resulting volume was Liuzu fabao tan jing, The Sixth Patriarch s Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra, sixth because Master Huineng is counted as the sixth generation of patriarchal succession from the first Chan patriarch Bodhidharma. Master Huineng s Platform Sutra is so highly regarded in East Asia that it is called a sutra, a term otherwise reserved for texts originating in India that record the words spoken by the Buddha or Bodhisattvas. In presenting this entirely new English translation of The Sixth Patriarch s Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra, the translators, Professors Heng Sure and Martin Verhoeven of Dharma Realm Buddhist University, have aimed, above all, to express in English Master Huineng s plain-spoken, forthright style. 4 SUTRAS The Śūraṅgama Sūtra A New Translation For more than a thousand years, the Śūraṅgama Sūtra has been held in high regard in the Mahāyāna Buddhist countries of East and Southeast Asia and has been as popular as the Lotus, Heart, and Diamond Sūtras. Its wealth of theoretical and practical instruction in living a spiritual life often made it the first major text studied by newly ordained monks, particularly in the Chan tradition. This Sutra is regarded as a complete and practical manual for spiritual practice that will lead to enlightenment. It provides instruction on understanding one s own Buddha-nature, the potential within every being for becoming a Buddha. The Sutra explains how and why this nature is hidden and how we can uncover it and recognize it as our own true mind. The Sutra also explains why personal integrity and purity of conduct are prerequisites for spiritual awakening. It presents the principles of meditation, and provides guidelines for discerning correct practices from those which deviate into wrong ones. It explains how our own intentional acts, whether physical, verbal, or mental, result in karmic experiences, including rebirths into various levels of being, both human and non-human. At the heart of the Sūtra is the Śūraṅgama Mantra. The Sutra promises that the practice of reciting this mantra, in the context of the other practices taught in the Sutra, can successfully eliminate internal or external obstacles that block the path of spiritual progress. He founded Zhenru Monastery in Jiangxi Province and restored Nanhua Monastery in Guangdong Province, the monastery of the Sixth Chan Patriarch Huineng. 14 Journals & Letters on a Bowing Pilgrimage Eight Volumes This collection of journals and letters was written by two American Buddhist monks, Heng Sure and Heng Chau, during their twoand-a-half year pilgrimage for world peace along the California coast from May 1977 to October Prostrating themselves on the ground after every three steps, in the manner of early Buddhist pilgrims in China, they made their way slowly from Gold Wheel Monastery just west of downtown Los Angeles, then north along the coast, following Pacific Coast Highway through Santa Barbara and Big Sur, through San Francisco and across the Golden Gate, then continued on, following Redwood Highway, 100 miles further north to the newly established City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Mendocino County. Traveling at the rate of a mile per day, they bowed, meditated, studied and chronicled their experiences for their teacher, Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua. These eight volumes contain the daily journals and letters of the monks as they reflect on their journey along the California coast and their spiritual journey of self-transformation. They wrote numerous reflections on passages taken from various sutras, inspirational readings, and literature, as well as people and situations they encountered on their journey. Reverend Heng Sure is currently director of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery and teaches on the staff at the Institute for World Religions. He received a Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union, and is a professor at Dharma Realm Buddhist University. Heng Chau, now known as Martin Verhoeven, graduated with his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
