2 2 Throughout the 4 years I had in NPCC, I had learnt many different things that built up my character, confidence and last but not least taught me to be a better team player that knows how to think ahead of things. Certainly I learnt a lot of values from NPCC, but the most significant ones were responsibility, challenge the process and model the way for others. Responsibility is to take up tedious tasks and is able to act independently whilst handling it. For an instance, being given the title of Vice-chairperson of the unit had me juggling through various things such as ensuring cadet safety take priority at all times, liaising with cadet inspectors and teacher officers and working together with the cadet leaders in running training sessions. But I am glad that with the help and encouragement of my squad I was able to get through it. Through these I learnt that it is important to also take things to the next level by implementing thoughts and putting them into action as well as letting effectively enabling others to act by entrusting certain roles that match up to their abilities and potential for it. For those who weren t sure of how to handle things, helping them step by step to understand and try acting out by themselves were essential also letting me know how to better improve myself. I am thankful for having a chance to be a leader as it has taught me that everyone can be a leader whether or not you have been given a position to do so. I also strongly feel that the values and memories I ve gotten through NPCC would be everlasting and would be beneficial in my future. 3 3 Over the past 4 years in NPCC, I have learned a lot that has and will benefit me in my life. I am extremely thankful for the many values that NPCC has instilled in me. NPCC has not only gifted me with leadership opportunities but has also played a huge part in shaping my skills and knowledge. This has been done through various competitions, parades and overseas experiential trips. My year as a Cadet Leader has been the most significant year in my journey in NPCC. I was appointed as the Chairman of the Unit. Adding on to that, I was given the opportunity to participate in various events such Campcraft Competition, the school s Inter-UG Drill competition, NPAP and OEV-HK. Some of my squadmates and I were selected to be in the Camp-craft competition. The seniors in my team were there to patiently guide me, as I was not confident in my skills. Under their mentorship, I learned the importance of patience. Although I was disheartened with the results, I decided to take on an optimistic outlook as this competition gave me the opportunity to get to know my unit mates better, as well as improve my campcraft skills. Through the competition, I learned to be more understanding and patient towards my peers. For NPAP 2016, I was in the GOH. It was a fulfilling experience and at the same time, tiring as trainings were mostly on Saturdays, lasting for about hours. Although it was tiring, it was completely worth it! NPAP was an enriching experience as I got to better know my fellow-cadets around me. All the efforts finally paid off as I marched out the HTA parade square, able to do my parents proud. Being in NPAP taught me an important lesson of how to balance my school-work with the various NPCC training sessions. We came in 3rd for the Inter-UG Drill competition at our school. It was nerve-wrecking to command my squad but I decided to persevere through the fear. My squad and I were proud of our accomplishment. For the achievement, I was assigned the position of Flag Party Commander for the school's National Day Parade. I felt delighted to be given the position. I will always cherish this memorable experience. I learned the importance of resilience and pushing through any obstacles I faced. By choosing not to give up even when I was faced with a challenge, I was rewarded with not only one, but two positive outcomes. I was fortunate to be selected to represent NPCC for OEV Hong Kong (2016). I was elated when I received the news that I had passed the interview. This would be my first CCA trip, and my first visit to Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, we visited many places such as the Victoria Peak Station, Police College and a school in Cheung Chau Island. We had a private boat trip from the Marine Police. It was an amazing experience riding their boat, as one would not be able to do so as a regular tourist. I learned plenty from the trip, such as the importance of teamwork, responsibility and respect. To this day, I keep the plane tickets, as I deeply miss the trip. In my final year as a cadet in NPCC, I was promoted to the rank of Station Inspector. I felt very honoured for us as I had achieved the highest rank possible for a cadet. I am thankful to have learnt invaluable values and skills from NPCC, and to have a unique bond with my squadmates. I will miss NPCC dearly as it has been a huge part of me and my secondary school experience. I sincerely appreciate everything that has been done for me and my squad. 4 4 I was chosen to attend Harmony Camp on the 23 rd and 24 th March. At first I was not that excited as I was the only one in my squad chosen to go and I thought I would be a little lonely. However, when I got to the campsite, I was happy to see some friends from other schools participating as well. Our first activity was, not surprisingly, ice-breakers. We played a game that was similar to Minute To Win It. The main goal of the game was to complete 4 different tasks in a certain time or as fast as possible. Although our group was not the first, we all still had a lot of fun and we had already bonded well. After lunch, we headed for our cultural trail, where each group was assigned a specific race to learn more about. Our group was assigned the Chinese cultural walk. Our first stop was a Chinese temple that, as our tour guide said, was were Chinese immigrants would pray for the safe trip from China to Singapore. Our next stop was, quite obviously, Chinatown, where we learnt about Chinese Opera and some basic Chinese calligraphy as well. I found the lesson the Chinese Opera interesting as I learnt about what kind of skills you need to have or how hard it actually is. After the trail, we headed to our dorms to shower. Our dorms were really comfortable and much better than I expected. The next day, we had the main part of our camp, the CPR+AED course. Although at first I thought I had already learnt all I needed to learn about CPR, but I was wrong. The course also taught us how to use the AED properly and how to tie a tourniquet. It was an enriching experience and I definitely learnt a lot. At the end, we all had a very interesting task to do. We had to create a video about something we learnt in camp. Although it was a daunting challenge, my group dived right in and started coming up with ideas. In the end, we came up with a video that shows what should happen, as in the appropriate actions taken, during a terrorist attack. Although our group did not win first place for the video, we all still thought that our video was very unique and original. In the end, after all the points from all the activities were tallied, they revealed the winners. Even though our group didn't win, we were actually the second last, I think I can speak for everyone that the camp was still an amazing, fun and enriching experience. 5 5 My experience in kayaking was a memorable one. It taught us how to deal with situations such as when someone s kayak has been capsized. I also learned what to do when my kayak capsizes, what are the parts of the kayak and their functions. When we began the course, the instructor taught us the parts such as the bow, the stern, the port, starboard and the drip ring. Although we did not manage to take note, I know that the drip ring reduces the water that runs down the shaft to your hands. On the first day, we learned to handle the paddle correctly. We may injure our hands or may not go towards where we are heading if we do not handle it well. We were taught how to keep our back straight when in a kayak so that we will be able to do efficient strokes and not strain our spine too much while could result in injuries. We also must ensure that our lifejacket does not go above your ears when you pulled it up as it will not be able to carry its function well when you are submerged in water as it could potentially endanger your life. We also learned what to do when our kayak has been capsized. When we were told to voluntarily capsize, we hesitated at first but quickly gained confidence after attempting multiple times. I, like everyone else, was afraid but I persevered through and managed to do so without fail. I think perseverance is essential because if you do not have the courage, you will never achieve the goals you have set. On the second day, we then instructed on what are the procedures needed to be taken when someone s kayak has been capsized. It would require two people to help as it requires a lot of strength to lift and empty out the kayak when it s capsized. We demonstrated care by asking the well-being of our peers when they got capsized. The times we spent during the course has deepen our relationships with my squad mates as well as my CI and I am looking forward to more of this type of programs in the future.
