2 What does the Bible say about Work Ephesians 6:5-9

3 We spend a majority of time at work And so this is something that God is concerned about The Bible teaches about the relationship between the worker and the boss and the worker to his work

4 Today, we don t have slaves and owners as there were back then But the equivalent today is the employer/ employee Most of us work for someone, so it applies to us. Who do you work for?

5 I. Our Attitude needs to be Changed. Vs. 5 5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.

6 Obey-the same word that s used for children Some bosses are great and some are terrible I have seen the whole spectrum. In the Army, you have to do what the Sergeant tells you. Some lead by example, they were easy to work for. Others sat around and yelled out orders and had a bad attitude.

7 We need to change our attitude on the outside with obedience Then you have an inward sincerity of heart, straightness, undivided heart. Heart-inner self, mind, will So why should we obey, even respect? Need to realize our place in life, realize that this person could fire you, the livelihood of your family is in their hands.

8 II. Our Motive needs to be Changed vs.6 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.

9 Two key words in the Greek, they need many words to describe them in English Win their favor -means man pleaser, Paul only uses this for slaves Their eye on you means you are a slave to the eye Always looking to see who is looking, seeing whom you can impress. Have you ever done that? Working extra hard when the boss is there, but then when he/she is gone, who cares?

10 We should not be trying to please the boss Rather, doing the will of God, to please Him Giving an honest day s work regardless of whether the boss sees us. Besides, you really don t think the boss is stupid, they know your work. Just as you get to know them, they get to know you.

11 III. Our Boss needs to be Changed vs.7 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people

12 You need to stop pleasing the middle management And start serving the president, that is God He owns all things; he is your ultimate master Start serving Him. Wholeheartedly means with eagerness and zeal As if -This is something that you need to do in yourself You may not be able to change your boss, but you can change yourself

13 IV. Our Benefits need to be Changed. Vs. 8 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.

14 Reward-pay back, where we get the word commission When a salesman sells something he gets a commission, a profit I believe that we will be rewarded here in this life When our work is good, honest. We will get raises, benefits and promotions. But this verse expands beyond just work to all of life everyone for whatever good he does

15 We will receive rewards for what we did after we became Christians We are God s children, and we were bought with a price, Jesus death on the cross Now to those who are procrastinators, life goes pretty quick Serve Him in your work, don t wait till retirement

16 V. Bosses Need to Change Vs 9 9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.

17 Paul is not saying that bosses should treat workers all the same, whether they do work or not. The good worker should be rewarded; the bad worker should be reprimanded. What he is getting at is that we should treat workers as God would treat them. Don t be difficult, threatening them, using words to create fear

18 Your work is a testimony, how you do your job People are watching to see how a Christian works How a Christian acts toward others How you treat the boss, or people under you Who are you working for?

20 What does the Bible say about...work Ephesians 6:5-9 We spend a majority of time at work And so this is something that God is concerned about The Bible teaches about the relationship between the worker and the boss and the worker to his work In the 1st century, Roman society had several million slaves Most worked in the homes of the rich And they were treated somewhat like family As Christianity spread, both the owner and slave became Christian And both owner and slave went to church Some slaves became leaders within the church, that was radical Slaves had few rights in Roman society But within the church they were equals Today, we don t have slaves and owners as there were back then But the equivalent today is the employer/employee Most of us work for someone, so it applies to us. Does Paul say: obey when you are treated right? It says here, Just as you would obey Christ You have been put in this job by God, God is all-powerful. You are there as a testimony to those around you. Since God put you there, obey as you would obey Christ. II. If you are doing something to get a raise, promotion or compliment Others are watching and see what you are doing We should not be trying to please the boss Rather, doing the will of God, to please Him Giving an honest day s work regardless of whether the boss sees us. Besides, you really don t think the boss is stupid, they know your work. Just as you get to know them, they get to know you. III. 21 Wholeheartedly means with eagerness and zeal As if -This is something that you need to do in yourself You may not be able to change your boss, but you can change yourself How can God change you? Pray a short prayer before you begin the workday Lord I am working for you, help me to do the best job that I can do. Help me to work with excellence and integrity When we work for the Lord, we realize that He is watching us and He is helping us to be the best. I can work on cars, but there are many things that I can t do. I always want to know a good mechanic. So when I ask around for a good mechanic, I want to hear. He knows what he is doing and he s honest That s all I need to hear. How about you? When people comment on your work, do they say? He knows what he s doing, he s honest IV. Our Benefits need to be Changed. We will all stand before the Judgment seat of Christ These are Christians, we do not get into heaven by doing good works We will receive rewards for what we did after we became Christians We are God s children, and we were bought with a price, Jesus death on the cross Now to those who are procrastinators, life goes pretty quick V. Bosses Need to Change Vs 9 We all have worked for someone and now we may be in the place of authority, you are a manager, owner, or boss Paul is not saying that bosses should treat workers all the same, whether they do work or not. The good worker should be rewarded; the bad worker should be reprimanded. What he is getting at is that we should treat workers as God would treat them. Don t be difficult, threatening them, using words to create fear You may be the boss here on earth, but when we get to heaven, Christ will equally judge everyone. Just because you were a boss doesn t mean that you will get special treatment. You will be judged for your work also, good or bad Your work is a testimony, how you do your job People are watching to see how a Christian works How a Christian acts toward others How you treat the boss, or people under you Who are you working for?
