9 120 [Mario Giacomelli ( )] Walking with Aldrin on the surface of the Moon Senigallia, July 1969 Vintage Agfacolor silver print, 128x90 mm, from the studio of Italian artist Mario Giacomelli. A conceptual amateur cropping from the celebrated Italian lanscape photographer s archive. Only the Agfa watermark indicates it cannot be an original NASA print, supposed to be only on US Kodak papers. A Man on the Moon is one of the most famous photographs of the 20th Century : Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin walks on the surface of the moon near the leg of the lunar module Eagle. Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong took this photograph with a 70mm lunar surface camera. Armstrong and Aldrin explored the Sea of Tranquility for two and a half hours while crewmate Michael Collins orbited above in the command module Columbia. There has been much speculation about Aldrin's desire at the time to be the first astronaut to walk on the Moon on July 21, According to different NASA accounts, he had originally been proposed as the first to step onto the Moon's surface, but due to the physical positioning of the astronauts inside the compact lunar landing module, it was easier for the commander, Neil Armstrong, to be the first to exit the spacecraft.
