2 Introduction Welcome to our Millfield Sixth Form Enrichment programme. On these pages, you will find a range of exciting events to enjoy throughout the Spring Term of All of our events are open to any Sixth Form pupil, regardless of which subjects they are studying. We have symposiums, a performance poet and psychologists to name but a few! There is a diverse mix this term, so please do come along and join us. Each event is designed to stimulate and challenge you will certainly gain an insight by attending. If you would like to attend, or you would like more information about any event, please do me fearn.p@millfieldschool.com Penny Fearn Co-Head of Academic Enrichment English Chris Let the Pig Out! 11 January 2018, 7.15pm Chris Redmond is definitely a pioneer of performance poetry. You may have seen Chris hosting the extremely successful musical poetry night Tongue Fu, or heard him live on BBC Radio 1 and 4 as well as a recent programme for CBBC. Chris will perform his poetry and answer questions about his experiences as a performance poet. We are very lucky to have Chris visit us his poetry is extraordinary, exciting and not to be missed! Languages Dr Andrew Spain s Catalan Crisis 17 January 2018, 7.15pm Dr Dowling is a Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University s School of Modern Languages. Andrew is a specialist in Spanish history, having written widely on democracy and dictatorship in Spain, and he is Programme Director for the Hispanic Studies Department. His current research is centred on the emergence of proindependence mobilisation in Catalonia. This particular lecture will concern the current crisis in Spain, and is suitable for all language, history and politics pupils, and anyone with an interest in democracy and politics in Europe. 1

3 Philosophy Dr Julian Atheism: The Case against God 18 January 2018, 7.15pm Dr Julian Baggini is the author of several books, including Welcome to Everytown: A Journey into the English Mind, Freedom Regained: The Possibility of Free Will and, most recently, The Edge of Reason: A Rational Skeptic in an Irrational World. He has written for numerous newspapers and magazines, including the Guardian, the Financial Times, Prospect and the New Statesman, as well as for think tanks The Institute of Public Policy Research and Demos. He is editor-in-chief and cofounder of The Philosophers Magazine. He has also appeared as a character in two Alexander McCall Smith novels, and is a presenter of several TED talks. Julian Baggini was one of the 43 scientists and philosophers who signed and sent a letter to Tony Blair and relevant Government departments, concerning the teaching of Creationism in schools in March He fronted a BBC schools programme on Secular Beliefs in March During this talk, Dr Baggini will present the case against the existence of God. It promises to be a lively and challenging evening. Dr Baggini is well known for his entertaining and thought-provoking presentations and this will be a real highlight within the calendar. Academic Society Academic Society Meeting 23 January 2018, 7.15pm Science Lecture Theatre Various members of the society will present under the umbrella title of New Society, a series of presentations on the important issues and developments of modern society and how they might develop and impact on us in future years. Physics Rob Engineering the Bloodhound Super Sonic Car 30 January 2018, 7.15pm Meyer Theatre Rob Bennett is the Chief Inspirer at Bloodhound SSC. The Bloodhound Super Sonic Car is designed and built to be the fastest land speed record car in history. In 2019, the team aims to surpass 1000mph powered by a jet engine and a rocket engine. The engineering is truly cutting edge. Rob Bennett brings to Millfield the fascinating story of the car and the team behind it. Biology and Psychology Symposium 8 February 2018, 10.30am pm & Meyer Theatre The Biology and Psychology Symposium is well established. Millfield hosts a number of local schools; last year we welcomed over 250 visiting students as well as our own Biology and Psychology pupils. 2

4 Dr Gavin Welsh Dr Gavin Welsh is currently a Non Clinical Senior Lecturer in renal cell biology in the Academic Renal Unit in Bristol. His research interests centre on renal cell signalling and how this is altered in disease states, especially in diabetic nephropathy. He also has strong collaborative research ties with the Academic Respiratory group run by Professor Ann Millar. Professor Nick Professor Roberts is a Professor of Sensory Ecology in Bristol University s School of Biological Sciences, and focuses on detection of light and colour in nature. His research is focused on investigating optical mechanisms that underlie sensory abilities such as polarization vision and the evolution of the bio-optics of signalling and photoreception. His work adopts a broad intra- and inter-disciplinary approach, using a combination of physics based techniques and behavioural studies, to try and understand how visual information helps guide aspects of animal behaviour. Dr Nick Scott-Samuel Dr Scott-Samuel is a Reader in Visual Perception at Bristol University s School of Experimental Psychology. His research was initially concerned with the visual perception of motion by humans, but he has become sidetracked over time by various other things, including the perception of food and drink, camouflage, visual search and the estimation of numerosity. Lucy Smith This talk will centre on the topic of green exercise and mental health. Joseph Sparks Joseph Sparks is the Subject Lead for Psychology at tutor2u. He is an experienced psychology and music teacher, writer, examiner and presenter. He is currently completing a Professional Doctorate in Education and is passionate about the impact of technology on teaching and learning. Tutor2u are exam performance specialists and an online educational publisher. They provide a comprehensive range of study and exam support resources and services to teachers, students, parents and other educational communities. Eva Hamilton Eva is the founder & CEO of Key4Life. Having spent over 30 years setting up different charities to work with some of the most disaffected people in Britain, Key4Life has built a reputation for delivering effective rehabilitation programmes for young men in prison and those at risk of going to prison. To date, they have completed six prison programmes in London and the South West, alongside two preventative At Risk programmes in Somerset, with the support of the Police and Councils across the county, as well as a successful pilot At Risk London programme. 3

5 ICT Laura Brown and Peter The Benefits of Social Media 20 February 2018, 7.15pm IT6 Introtweet specialise in helping businesses develop their social media presence. Laura and Peter will be discussing the benefits of social media, presenting some case studies of companies they have worked with, and sharing their top tips. This interactive session is suitable for anyone interested in technology, social media or marketing. Food & Nutrition Primrose Living in Line with Nature 21 February 2018, 7.15pm Primrose Matheson is the founding member of Primrose s Kitchen. Having had a youth of chronic fatigue, ME and poor digestion, Primrose set out on a mission to understand her body and what was needed to maintain it in perfect health. This led her into naturopathic and complementary health studies and a degree in homeopathy, and she has used that knowledge to design natural and wholesome food. She started with muesli and has extended to granolas, juices and other products. If you would like to be inspired on how to live a healthier lifestyle through diet, but also through one s daily activities, mindset, relationship with one s surroundings and develop an awareness of the impact we have on the environment around us and on a larger scale, this is the talk for you! Sixth Form History Conference Dr Elaine Fulton (Birmingham University) Dr Matt Rendle (Exeter University) 13 March 2018, 2.45pm (first three lectures) and 4.00pm (second three lectures) Meyer Theatre and various There will be six speakers at the History Conference. Dr Fulton is a leading expert on the Reformation, and will be speaking on the role of Martin Luther in the Reformation. The focus of Dr Rendle s research is on modern Russian history, and his lecture will be about late Tsarist Russia and the causes of the Russian Revolution. Philosophy David Churchill MD FRCOG Medical Ethics: Making those impossible decisions 15 March 2018, 7.15pm Dr Churchill is the Clinical Director at New Cross Hospital, Fellow of the Royal College, and a research fellow at the University of Oxford. He is a widely published and respected doctor with years of experience at the very highest level. Between 2011 and 2015 he was a member of the NICE committee. Outside of his work for the NHS, Dr Churchill volunteers his services to a number of NGOs teaching medicine around the world. In this talk, Dr Churchill will take us through the life of a doctor and the everyday ethical decisions that are made. He will look back on his years of experience and discuss some of the most complex ethical cases he has faced. This will be an interactive talk suitable for all who wish to know more about this most 4

6 controversial of topics. Dr Churchill s talk will be challenging at times, but always thought provoking. Resilience Mandy In Therapy 16 March 2018, 7.15pm Mandy is an addiction, parenting and relationship expert, and the founder and Clinical Director of CHARTER Harley Street. She is a regular contributor to press and television with her flagship Channel 5 programme In Therapy now in its third series. Mandy s enthusiasm is infectious as she dispels the myths surrounding addiction, and is committed to speaking in schools on early intervention, addiction, emotional coping mechanisms and self-esteem. Mandy will share her expertise as an experienced psychiatrist and broadcaster, advising pupils on mental health, strategies to cope in a stressful world and sharing experiences from her very successful career. Maths Rob (Counter) intuition 20 March 2018, 7.15pm Science Lecture Theatre Rob is active in the popularisation of mathematics and was awarded the Zeeman medal 2017 for excellence in the promotion of maths. He is the author of numerous books about mathematics and regularly features on national radio. His talks aim to combine surprise, accessibility and humour, while conveying the importance and relevance of mathematics. This is a talk about human intuition, how 5 it can sometimes lead you astray, and how maths can help you to think critically and behave more rationally. Academic Society Matthew How to change the world: The lessons I ve learnt from politics and campaigning 22 March 2018, 7.15pm Matthew Elliott is one of the UK s foremost political campaigners, having served as Chief Executive of the Vote Leave campaign in the 2016 EU referendum, and Campaign Director of the NOtoAV campaign in the 2011 referendum on the Alternative Vote. As a policy entrepreneur, he has founded and run numerous award-winning campaigns, including the TaxPayers Alliance, Big Brother Watch and Business for Britain, the precursor to Vote Leave. Matthew has been described by the Financial Times as one of the most formidable political strategists in Westminster, and by the New European as an unsung titan of the Brexit cause. Through the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, he has worked with political parties across the world, including in Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Ghana, Guatemala, Kenya, the Maldives, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine. He has written four books, numerous op-eds, appears regularly on TV and radio, and is a frequent speaker both in the UK and overseas.
