17 Courage It is in the small things we see it. The child s first step, as awesome as an earthquake. The first time you rode a bike, wallowing up the sidewalk. The first spanking when your heart went on a journey all alone. When they called you crybaby or poor or fatty or crazy and made you into an alien, you drank their acid and concealed it. Later, if you faced the death of bombs and bullets you did not do it with a banner, you did it with only a hat to cover your heart. You did not fondle the weakness inside you though it was there. Your courage was a small coal that you kept swallowing. If your buddy saved you and died himself in so doing, then his courage was not courage, it was love; love as simple as shaving soap. Later, if you have endured a great despair, then you did it alone, getting a transfusion from the fire, picking the scabs off your heart, then wringing it out like a sock. Next, my kinsman, you powdered your sorrow, you gave it a back rub and then you covered it with a blanket and after it had slept a while it woke to the wings of the roses and was transformed. Later, when you face old age and its natural conclusion your courage will still be shown in the little ways, each spring will be a sword you ll sharpen, those you love will live in a fever of love, and you ll bargain with the calendar and at the last moment when death opens the back door you ll put on your carpet slippers and stride out. Anne Sexton 17
18 Name: Based on your reading of Courage, choose the best answer for the following multiple choice questions: 1. The different phases of life and the evolution of courage are illustrated through all of the following EXCEPT: A. The repetition of the world later. B. The division of stanzas C. The use of simile and metaphor in the second stanza. D. The references to seasons and time in the last stanza. 2. According to the author, all of the following lines demonstrate moments of courage EXCEPT: A. The first spanking when your heart went on a journey all alone (lines 6 7). B. If your buddy saved you and died himself in so doing (lines 22 23) C. if you have endured a great despair, then you did it alone (lines 27 28) D. you ll put on your carpet slippers and stride out (lines 46 47). 3. The author writes, if you have endured a great despair, then you did it alone, getting a transfusion from the fire, picking the scabs off your heart, then wringing it out like a sock. In these lines, the author: A. uses simile and metaphor to illustrate the pain involved in suffering. B. employs personification and imagery to show emotional turmoil. C. uses simile and imagery to show how people succumb to trauma. D. makes use of metaphor and personification to underscore the effectiveness of resilience. 4. In lines 32 37, personification is used for all of the following EXCEPT: A. To characterize sorrow as a sickly person who needs rest in order to change into something positive. B. To illustrate that when courage leaves, it never returns. C. To show that courage can be redeemed when it seems to be faltering. D. To reinforce the fact that people can be rejuvenated after given time to heal. 5. The speaker says, When they called you crybaby or poor or fatty or crazy and made you into an alien, you drank their acid and concealed it. In this line, the speaker: A. implies that you repressed suffering when made to feel like an outcast. B. suggests that sometimes courage requires one to fight back. C. conveys that people without courage take insults rather than standing up for themselves. D. illustrates the harmful effects of repressing anger. 6. In lines 45 47, the speaker suggests that people should: A. succumb to death. B. try to make deals for more time in life. C. face death with a sense of peace and dignity. D. make the most out of every minute in life. 7. The author conveys all of the following ideas EXCEPT: A. Courage can be found in seemingly mundane events as well as extraordinary accomplishments in life. B. Courage takes on many forms. C. Courage evolves over one s lifetime. D. Those without courage are unable to prevail in life. 18
