1 Sacred Stones April 2014 Crystal of the Month: Quartz By Larry Bassett Background: Quartz is without a doubt, the master sacred stone. There is so much information about quartz that I will only touch upon aspects of this amazing crystal. Quartz is one of the most plentiful crystals on Earth. In the earth's crust, feldspar is the most plentiful, followed by quartz, at 12%. Flawless, clear quartz, is the perfect prism that splits sunlight into the full spectrum of colors. Quartz is generally colorless (clear) and white. Quartz is found worldwide in every color, and in a wide variety of shapes. Quartz is the essential ingredient in thousands of stones like jaspers, agates, obsidians, etc. Quartz was first described by Pliny in 77 A.D. Pliny called it crystallus. The word crystal is said to derive from the Greek word crystallos, meaning ice. Some say the word quartz derived from the Slavic word kwardy, meaning hard, others say it came from the Saxon word quertz. The later seems the most plausible. Historically quartz was known as rock crystal. Quartz has been found in tombs dating back over 75,000 years. The following are some of the different forms, trade-names, and marketing names for quartz: actinolite, amethyst (see Sacred Stones newsletter, August 2011), ametrine (see November 2011), aqua aura (see December 2013), azeztulite (see May 2013), barnacle, beta (small octahedrons), blue (the two pieces below the Siberian green in the middle), blue rutile included (the law giver, may be a tourmaline), botryoidal drusy, bridge, Buddha, cactus, candle, carved, castle tip (to reduce fear and facilitate healing), cathedral (also known as water, skeletal, jacare, or elestial), celestial (milky white phantom), channeling, chlorite included (green mica, pictured upper right), citrine (see October 2011), clear (pictured lower left), cluster, consummation, convoluted, cross, curved, dendritic, double terminated, dragon's tooth diamontina (laser wands that look like a tooth), dream, drusy (minute quartz points on the surface), 1

Then there are the quartz varieties named after the mines or persons that make them popular. Then there are the obscure varieties named after colors like lavender, orchid, midnight black, etc., etc. As you can see there is a plethora of quartz varieties which excludes all of the other quartz based sacred stones. The last time I checked there were over 500 quartz types and more being added all the time. Recognize that the varieties are based on shape, the number of edges surrounding the largest face, and other designs on the largest sloping face near the point, inclusions, and sheer marketing. All sacred stonesl have one or more healing specialties they perform quickly. Quartz often grows with six parallel sides that slope to a point, yet you can find rare pieces that are five, seven, and eight sided. I have heard there is even a nine sided quartz. I had a five sided and have seen a seven sided. Why is quartz the magical crystal of the ages? One possible explanation is that the quartz molecule is said to grow in perfect double helix like patterns, just like our DNA. Another explanation is the consciousness within quartz (and other crystals), and these two aspects provide us with a deep connection. Quartz is indeed the master (some say universal) crystal because it is programmable, amplifies energy (intention), it is piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and potentially more. It was Marcel Vogel who experimented and validated these properties when he was an employee at IBM. Marcel discovered quartz would absorb inharmonious (or discordant) energy, resonate it internally, and out the other end flowed harmonious energy. He also saw how he could program each facet of a crystal, so a six sided double terminated quartz held six programs. He showed how quartz would direct harmonious energy into anything it touched if that was the intention or the 2

3 stored program in a facet. He created the flawless, six sided, double terminated, clear quartz Vogel crystal. Kathy purchased one (pictured bottom right and up one) from Marcel while he was still alive. You can always tell a real Vogel crystal because when he sold it to Kathy, she watched him knock the point off each end. He did this probably because he felt most people would be unable to handle, or might potentially, misuse the energy. Some will say the chipped ends prevents the crystal from focusing energy properly. I would say that they are missing the point, because it is our intention, working with the quartz, that can potentially do anything. Ancient legends abound about Atlantis, Og, Mu, Lemuria, and other long gone civilizations using clear quartz as power generators, solar reflectors, rejuvenation, and a plethora of healing and power applications, etc. The ancients were well aware of the consciousness in all crystals. They believed all stones were alive and that they probably took a breath every few hundred years or so. Many cultures saw quartz as divine. Quartz was the embodiment of the Greek Goddess of the Earth (Gaia), the Hindu Goddess of Life Force (Kundalini), the Roman Goddess of Light (Latona), the Mayan Goddess of the Four Ages of Women, and more, including native American Goddesses. Quartz was considered the supreme gift of Mother Earth and the creator. Quartz was known as the Ice of the Gods. It was carved into a wide variety of talismans, forms, and shapes, and used in numerous healing, and public ceremonies. The beliefs, uses, and importance of quartz would be an interesting book. Quartz was even used to start fires. Practicality every culture used and worshiped quartz because it was the embodiment of the conscious, divine spirit we all seek. Cultures throughout history knew that quartz was programmable and the energy of the program allowed wisdom, power, and communication from the divine realms to flow through the crystal and the facilitator. They knew quartz would clean and align the subtle and electronic bodies. They highly valued and revered the form of quartz as the unconditional love it embodied and radiated. This was one of the reasons quartz was known as the master crystal. Quartz was highly valued by spiritual healers, religious leaders, shaman, and everyday folk. The force field of negative ions emitted by quartz made people feel better and this was probably the primary effect noticed by many without understanding what was happening. The reality is quartz (and all crystals) vibrate at a higher frequency than the human body. The body will entrain and attempt to vibrate at the higher energy, thus facilitating the body to heal. Shaman used it as the link between heaven and earth. They also used it to communicate with animals, plants, and other minerals. This was an important stone to place in tombs, urns, etc. Quartz was used in funeral rites by almost every culture. Quartz was the window into other worlds, times and places, to gain information, wisdom, know secrets, etc. When the ancients call quartz the master crystal, this gives us a world of information. They knew how quartz amplifies and strengthens thoughts and emotions. 3

4 It balances, calms, centers, heals, and much more, as it enhances positive characteristics and traits. It was used to find the cause of illnesses and subsequent healing actions. It is said it was also placed upon the tongue to assuage fevers and thirst. Sir Issac Newton used quartz to create and study the spectrum of light and he used this to measure the wavelengths of each color. Quartz is the basis of our digital technology because of the piezoelectric property. Quartz applications began with the old crystal radio sets. When I had a Kirlian photograph taken holding only quartz, my aura expanded dramatically. Quartz reduces fears and anger as it augments personal growth. Today, we find quartz an essential part of our life because of the electronic applications. Everyone is aware of crystal balls being used by fortunetellers, seers, and others. Many believe quartz works with all of our cells to create the optimum state of health and being. Some believe quartz has the qualities of water and our best friend, similar to the experience of a faithful dog, ever loving us in spite of our actions. Others may find the energy of quartz too stimulating. My experience is that we receive the energy we need to remove blockages, balance energy centers, and clear the darkness and negativity each of us carries because of our judgments. All that we need to do is remove our limitations, belief systems, judgments, guilt, and anything that prevents our embracing the consciousness that crystals radiate in the form of unconditional love. Our body is a liquid crystal that consists of light energy that is vibrating at multiple frequencies. When we vibrate at our optimal frequency, we are in a state of perfection. Quartz crystals (all crystals) teach us to love unconditionally. Anything less than that is the human condition most know so well. Why I Love This Stone: The physical properties and metaphysical effects of quartz are well beyond the experience of much of humanity. Be aware that no crystal will ever harm, unless you do something improper like dropping it on your toe or making an improper elixir. Anyone who can sit (or recline) quietly, and relax, will feel the energy of this remarkable crystal. Quartz works on removing blocked emotions and energies, as it cleanses, balances, and augments the subtle energies of your body. You may feel the quartz tingle, pulse, cause waves of energy to swirl or sweep up and down the body. Some people feel the intensity of quartz, when it pulses, as intensely as a bolt of lightening. For some people, parts of the body will hurt and this only means you meed to hold the quartz until it has finished 4

5 removing the pain. We go numb in awful and dangerous situations and quartz will remove this blocked energy. Many feel this blocked energy as the quartz removes this cool to cold energy, and the crystal also must be held until the work is complete. In one meditation I held a lithium quartz in each hand and after 45 minutes I handed them to the friend sitting next to me. He exclaimed that it felt as if I had given him pieces that had been in the freezer. One of the most amazing aspects of quartz is what I call the unwet water. This incredible substance I (and many others) have felt, gives the impression that the quartz is coated with water. It feels slippery and wet, yet if you try to wipe it away with your other hand, the quartz is dry. The most incredible aspect is when one gets quiet in the mind and learns to listen, you discover the consciousness in quartz. Quartz will speak, or sing to you, the words you need to hear. Be prepared for what it may tell you. Quartz, like selenite, is the perfect crystal for channeling harmonious energy or pulling discordant energy. Optical clarity, imperfections, odd shapes, and irregularities have little to do with the energy radiated, or channeled through any piece of quartz. Composition: Quartz is composed of silicon, oxygen, and other minerals we call inclusions. The chemical formula is always SiO 2, often regardless of the inclusions. This formula SiO 2 is somewhat misleading since quartz is a framework that is a silicon oxygen tetrahedra (SiO 4 ), and each oxygen is shared between two other tetrahedra, giving the overall formula of SiO 2. Quartz with a multitude of colors contains a plethora of other mineral inclusions and these create all the other quartz based sacred stones. Physical Properties: Clear and white quartz is a beautiful, unique, ordinarily common, and yet a quite extraordinary, sacred stone. Quartz is rated with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. The luster is vitreous. The transparency is translucent to transparent. Basically, quartz will activate, amplify, harmonize, receive, store, radiate, and transmit energy. The electronics industry uses quartz because of the piezoelectric and amplification properties. If you squeeze quartz, the pressure creates an electric potential. Squeezing and releasing the pressure on quartz creates an electric potential then current. The word piezoelectric is from the German word piezien, which means to squeeze. When a constant pressure is applied to quartz, it will vibrate at a specific frequency forever. This property of a constant frequency is used in clocks, digital, and other solid state electrical applications. The quartz will vibrate until the pressure is released. If you apply an electric current, the quartz will generate an audible sound. This became sonar and other applications in the audio world. The polarity of quartz changes under pressure and heat, even the heat from your hand when you hold it. Quartz is programmable with one program per facet. Some even believe quartz and other crystals may be the computers 5

6 of the future. The potential of the programmability of quartz has yet to be really explored. The pyroelectric effect is useful to draw inharmonious energy, transenergize it into harmonious energy, and then direct it back into the client. As you hold a piece of quartz, the heat from your hands raises the temperature of the quartz and the energy it radiates, channels, or pulls increases. Quartz amplification of energy is related to the energy of your will power, temperature, and probably other factors. Quartz, you, and your client's intention energy, can do amazing things. Experiences: For me, quartz facilitated more metaphysical and physical experiences than any other sacred stone. The 13 sided clear piece (pictured lower left) I was told was an elestial. It came to me in dream time and told me it was waiting for me to come get her. I held her the day before, after I bought an amazing 15 pound clear quartz piece. I got it first thing in the morning. Over the years a few people picked her up without permission and she sent what they described as a shock to their heart and they put her down immediately. This is why I call her Vajra, which means lightening bolt. The 15 pound quartz I bought has been used in a number of ceremonies. One person heard about my crystals, through a friend, and she said a shaman from Brazil was to visit her and a group of battered women. She asked if I would bring my crystals up to Prescott, AZ, for the weekend. I agreed, and I held the energy as I observed the ceremony. All of the women went into the crystal and a few were reluctant to share their experiences. They all agreed the experience was liberating and life changing. A number of times when working in class, or at home with friends, we find that people experience what I call the slippery, unwet water. This is an unusual sensory experience because it feels like the crystal is wet and covered with a layer of water, yet it is dry. Quartz often provides unusual experiences. In more than one of our crystal classes, women have experienced an orgasm. One was in her 70s, others were in their 40s, and 50s. How did I know, they told me they experienced an orgasm while sitting in the energy. In each instance, I felt a rush of energy and when I looked at them, they all blushed, as one giggled and another had a huge smile. Kathy and I had a Kriya Yoga initiation and each person was touched by a piece of white quartz to transfer the energy of the Yogi and empower the student. One amazing experience was with a friend who is the most psychic of anyone I have met. He fell in love with one of my 3 inch spheres. He named her Amma (mother) and worked with her for a month. I spent a day working with him in his log cabin, in the high desert, on March 1 st. The cabin was comfortable and warm when I arrived in the morning. I saw there was no fire in the fireplace and he told me Amma heated the cabin. Although I heard the words, I had no idea what he really meant. The next morning I was to leave and when packed and ready to go, I heard Amma call for me to take her on my journey. I told my friend I forgot Amma and 6

7 he said she was in the bed because he slept with her. When I picked her up she felt warm, maybe over 100 degrees and I then understood what he said. Amma provided the heat and comfort for his log cabin. I asked him how he did it and he just smiled and said I would know. I, and many others, fortunate enough to be able to get into a stillness that at times that allows us to hear what others ignore or are unable to hear provide the answers we seek. Crystals speak or sing to everyone. Plants will also speak with you. This is the perfect time to ask them for their name. Pay attention to what they have to teach you. Recommended Uses: Quartz is beneficial anywhere it is placed. Set your intention and always work with multiples of two when possible. Lithium quartz seems to be very beneficial when placed in each hand. Quartz in layouts or patterns look nice, however, your and your client's intention with the energy of unconditional love are the most important aspect that facilitates healings. Essential Oils: Essential oils are powerful healers, most require dilution with a carrier oil, some are photosensitive, and there are very dangerous contraindications when clients are on medications, or if they have certain medical conditions. Every sacred stone works well with all essential oils. Meditations: Kathy began with the the clear, 13 sided, free form. Vajra is a very loving crystal. Kathy had some numbness in her hands and finally put the quartz on her left hip and held it with her left hand on the side. Vajra was quickly working on her hip and Kathy saw that she was repairing the bone. It was an interesting energy and she noticed the numbness in her hands also disappeared. Then her hand felt as if it moved into Vajra and she had the sensation of her and the quartz crystal as one. I began with the thin curved piece pictured one down from the top right. This gift quickly began to heat my hands and soon they were hot and slightly vibrating. Ironically the quartz was cool to cold in my hot hands. I was soon watching the movie where I was observing without interacting. I felt a profound love for those in the movie that I was watching. I also received some answers when I went into the great silence. Kathy began with the seven inch Lemurian, pictured upper left. She instantly saw hundreds of little hearts all around. Soon she felt a tingling on the right side of her brain. She knew this related to the gall bladder and 7

8 issues, such as anger by others, that deeply effected her. Then she heard she was being rewired to release the issues present from birth in her brain. She felt like the Lemurian was a rocket, shooting energy through areas of her body. She felt the issues of being overburdened with responsibility as a child being lifted away. Kathy saw how Lemuria was Yin (arts, creativity, harmony, spirituality, etc.) and Atlantis was Yang and this imbalance was a huge factor in the sinking of Atlantis and Lemuria in the last pole shift. The energy of the Lemurian soon dissipated. Kathy was told that the wisdom from the Lemurian sacred stone was imparted by activating her DNA so she remembered a lifetime there as a professora, and she understood what she saw. She saw the numbers Pi, 17, and 37, for some reason and she saw that she was now like the rocket, filled with energy. I began with the three inch piece pictured below the curved one I used last time. I also held the same piece as before. I quickly went into the 10 th dimension to work with a man called Porthos. He has a healing technique called immediacy and this directs energy to afflicted areas. I put the thin curved piece pointing to the area I injured and held the other piece between my hands. I was feeling the energy intensify and then it finished and I was back to consciousness. The afflicted area had no pain. I began carrying quartz and found my overall pain almost completely disappear. Miscellaneous: Quartz is easy to find in high quality and at a reasonable price. Quartz works best when it is natural, avoid any stone that is artificially enhanced. Quartz has a great influence on the astrological signs of Capricorn, Leo, and Gemini. Quartz is really associated with all birth signs. Quartz as a clear variety, vibrates to the numbers 1,3, and 4. Quartz in other various forms, vibrates to all the numbers. Quartz is associated with the planet Venus, and the Sun. Quartz in various forms is beneficial for the all the chakras, especially the crown. Quartz is the 10 th anniversary gemstone gift. Quartz is said to be the birthstone for April. Quartz is associated with all the elements Earth, Fire, Air, and Water. Quartz is one of the seven precious substances in Buddhism. Quartz is said to balance the Yin and Yang energy in the body. Quartz is one of the more powerful Feng Shui energy dispersers. It is often placed in windows to create the rainbows of light to illumine rooms.
