3 The Irish Centre for Shamanic Studies Welcome to the Shamanism Ireland 2011 brochure! This year marks an important anniversary - the Irish Centre of Shamanic Studies has been running courses and workshops in classical and core Shamanism for 15 years! Over these years we have seen some major changes in the world, but we have also seen major changes in people. Year in and year out, more and more people attend the courses and workshops. I think this is indicative of a growing awareness that what we need is found not just in the outside world but also through the inner journey. With this in mind the Irish Centre for Shamanic Studies, based at Dunderry Park, is focusing on providing courses and facilities for people who are searching for a more sustainable way of living, spiritual democracy and holistic healing. The centre is run by tioners and provide a healing sanctuary for those in need. This year, we intend to expand the activities of both the ICSS and Dunderry Park. We will be adding some new, innovative and exciting events to our schedule. One key event will be our very own festival! The Spirit of Folk will be a gathering of like-minded people which will explore all things folk - music, spirituality, healing, storytelling, games, and arts & crafts. We are introducing a new one-day course on Shamanism and Ecology - in this course closer understanding of our planet. And at Dunderry Park we will be launching new activities which will work with animals and organic gardening, bringing the healing power of nature to people in need of a reconnection to the source of life. We will also be be increasing our Spirit in the City meet-ups and starting a trekking group with the aim of bringing more people together to share in a common vision of a more holistic and sustainable way of life. All this work will be funded by the Oaktree Charitable Trust. The only source of revenue that the trust has is brought in through the courses and events at Dunderry Park. We hope that these new ventures will bring more opportunities for fundraising and volunteering. 4 Martin Duffy MIAHIP, MIACP, EAP Transpersonal Psychotherapist and Shamanic Teacher sation that runs the Irish Centre for Shamanic Studies (ICSS) at Dunderry Park. The Centre is dedicated to promoting and preserving shamanic traditions from around the world, particularly those of the pre-celtic and Celtic era. Contemporary Shamanic approaches are also taught at the centre. Martin has worked as a mental health care professional since He is an accredited transpersonal/jungian psychotherapist. He has trained in various forms of consciousness shifting methods including Holotropic Breathwork, Dreamwork, Trance dancing and Firewalking. His grandfather and mother are traditional folk healers and he is following in their footsteps. Andes, and Africa and also has trained in core Shamanism with the Foundation of Shamanic Studies (U.S.A.) and the Scandinavian Centre for Shamanic Studies. Martin brings warmth and compassion to his shamanic practice. He has strong values with regards to integrity, honesty, and openness. In particular he within themselves. page 3

5 Events and Meet-Ups Spirit in the City every 2nd Wednesday. Spirit of Folk Festival September 23rd-25th Dunderry Park Spirit in the City is a meetup with a difference. Based in Dublin City Centre it is a fortnightly drop in event where we come together to explore different aspects of Shamanism and the transpersonal perspective. The night takes the structure of a talk or presentation followed by an experiential drumming journey, hemi-sync guided imagery or a mindfulness meditation. We then break for tea/coffee and biscuits. This is a great way to meet new people and explore interesting ideas in a social environment. This year Dunderry Park is running a fundraising festival in aid of the Oaktree Charitable Trust. Spirit of Folk is a unique boutique festival which will celebrate all things folk. From folk music to folk living, sports, storytelling and spirituality, this is an event not to be missed. Run over the last weekend in September, we will come together to create a peaceful, fun and magical atmosphere where the worries of the world are left behind. 6 The Shaman s Journey Basic Workshop Prerequisite for other courses. March 4-6th, August 5th-7th, November 25th-27th On this introductory workshop participants will learn the core methods and techniques used by shamanic people from around the world for thousands of years. We will be using chanting, drumming, rattling, trance dancing, ritual and ceremony to enter the shamanic state of consciousness, connecting with our power animals and spirit guides. Participants will also learn to access power, knowledge and healing by journeying outside the matrix of ordinary reality to the lower world, middle world and upper world of nonordinary reality. We will create a safe and sacred space to share our stories and explore the deeper meaning of our journeys. Shamanism and Ecology New Course - One Day - 4th June and the intuitive approaches to exploring mother nature s bountiful mysteries at a deeper level. We will begin the day by coming together in the circle to communicate and connect with ourselves and each other followed by a shamanic drum journey to commune with our power animals and spirit guides, working with the intention of awakening into the awareness of the spirit of nature. 7 The Shaman s Breath January 28th - 30th, July 22nd - 24th November 4th-6th Holotropic Breathwork was created by Dr. Stanislav Grof as a method to journey deeper into the non-ordinary realms of consciousness, using deep and fast breathing, powerful evocative trance music and healing bodywork. Shamans and mystics have used the breath to access the healing potential of non-ordinary reality for thousands of years. Holotropic Breathwork leads one into an adventure of self discovery, self exploration and self healing. Participants have access to deep shamanic journeys, past life memories, merging with the cosmic mind, ecstatic and joyful experiences and mystical awareness states. Other experiences may include re-experiencing birth, release of energetic blockages caused by past traumas, and the healing of emotional and physical conditions. This workshop takes place within a safe and sacred setting. Participants work in pairs, while one breathes the other sits and supports their journey. The Breathwork experience is also supported by group work and art therapy. The sessions typically last around three hours, giving adequate time to journey as deeply as you need to go. Other activities will include Shamanic journeying, time in nature, trance dancing and group sharing. 8 Shamanic Practitioners Course On this course we will be using traditional shamanic techniques from around the world to explore the exciting and ecstatic realms beyond ordinary reality, such as drumming and rattling, trance dancing, shamanic breathwork, ritual and ceremony. The course consists of four weekend residential workshops over the period of one year. We will be working together in the circle, creating a safe and sacred space to enable us to form a healing community. I Shamanic Gathering - April 1st-3rd This workshop builds on what was learned on the basic workshop with the emphasis being on creating community and deepening/intensifying the shamanic experience. al, shape shifting with nature, stalking awareness, shamanic healing techniques, journeying methods, use of drum and rattle, journeying to the ancestors, spirit boat, ecstatic journey, (dance, breathwork and journeying), fet- II Death and Rebirth - May 6th-8th On this course participants will learn to work with death and dying from a positive shamanic perspective. Death and dying are often taboo subjects in our society whereas shamanic people embrace the positive healing ben- as a part of life leads to a rebirth of a new whole self. Participants will also learn to work with death and dying from a personal and professional viewpoint using traditional means to become familiar with where we go af- cross over the threshold between life and death, and acting as a guide for the soul of the dying to the other world. page 7

9 III Shamanic Healing - July 8th-10th From a shamanic perspective illness and disease come from three main causes;; loss of power, intrusions, and soul loss. On this course participants will be taught how to restore power to their clients who are suffering from the symptoms of power loss. IV They will also learn how to see and sense shamanically, and remove intrusions using shamanic extraction techniques. The course also includes journeying to source latent healing power, working with plant medicine, creating a healing ritual, diagnostic and tunnel healing journey, contacting Soul Retrieval - August 26th-28th Soul loss occurs when a person undergoes a traumatic event in their lives, such as loss of loved ones, accident or injury, separation, abuse, or any event that the person is shocked or hurt by. At the time of the trauma, part of the person s soul sometimes leaves their body as a survival strategy in order not to be totally devastated by the shock of the negative experience. Sometimes the soul part is reluctant to return to the person because it fears that is not safe to do so. Some of the symptoms of soul loss are feeling spaced out, numb, depressed, deadened, addictions and chronic illness. Soul loss blocks us from feeling connected to ourselves, to others and to the earth. Soul retrieval is an important part of shamanic healing work. Participants will be taught how to work with those who have suffered from soul loss, learning the techniques for tracking and retrieving lost souls and returning them to their rightful place. The course includes journeying to learn soul tracking skills, how to avoid taking other soul parts, retrieving soul parts for others and yourself, healing circle and trance dancing. 10 Advanced Shamanic Practice October 5th- 9th This week long course is open to those who have completed the Shamanic Practition- ers Course and who make a commitment to work on themselves as the wounded healer. 11 Shamanic States/ Sacred Sites June 16th- 19th, December 16-18th Our ancient ancestors celebrated the solstice on the sacred sites at this special time of year. They knew the importance of perform- ing rituals when the portals to the otherworld were open and the veil between the worlds was thin. We will gather together in the circle to cre- ate a supportive healing community where we can journey deeper into ourselves and beyond. This four day workshop is open to those who wish to explore the shamanic realms at a deep- er level. We will be performing ritual and cer- emony on the sacred sites of the Boyne Val- ley. Participants will also take part in a Celtic Sweatlodge and journey into the womb of mother earth inside the megalithic dome (cairn). 12 Associated Courses: Facilitated by Annette Peard Shamanic Counsellor and Reiki Master Annette started her spiritual path in earnest 26 years ago, learning body and Indian head massage, metamorphic technique and becoming a Reiki Master. She discovered Shaman- She is a trained Shamanic Counsellor and Practitioner and has attended many shamanic workshops and rituals both here in Ireland and abroad with indigenous shamans. She was made a Peace Elder by Lakota Chief Mary Thunder in 1999 at the Four Directions Conference in Texas. She has trained with Grof Transpersonal Training to be a Holotropic BreathworkTM facilitator. She is also a practicing Druid and member of a Grove. She is available for one-to-one sessions for shamanic counselling and healing (soul retrieval, extraction and journeying), Reiki, rituals and druidic ceremonies. Annette also holds a drumming circle at Dunderry Park once a month on a Monday evening. This is an on-going circle started several years ago and has grown organically bringing together like minded people who wish to gather on a regular basis. 14 The Oaktree Charitable Trust The Oaktree Charitable trust was set up in 1999 and runs Dunderry Park. Its aim is to provide relief to people suffering from stress and trauma through providing a relaxing and healing space at Dunderry Park. The OCT provides free or reduced rates to organisations with similar goals and has worked with Narcotics Anonymous, the Rape Crisis Centre and, in co-operation with the Tara Centre, victims of the Omagh Bombing. We also provide reduced rates and bursary positions on courses and workshops run at Dunderry Park. Mission and Vision To provide a safe and healing environment for caring communities to grow and nurture their members as well as to encourage sus- How to get involved As well as providing free and subsidised weekends for charities the OCT has a number of other activities you can get involved in. We provide: Meditation and Artistic retreat space. Bursaries on the current courses at Dunderry Park. From Spring onwards we will be running a monthly trekking group to encourage exercise and time in nature. An animal sanctuary and half way house for animals that need caring for. The OCT takes care of Dunderry Park so that future umbrella body that governs the work of the Centre at Dunderry Park including the Irish Centre for Shamanic Studies and The Transpersonal Institute. 15 Dunderry Park Workshop and Function Venue Dunderry Park is a 200 year old restored Georgian residence set on 25 acres of wooded parkland and a lake. It is located in the historic Boyne Valley, Co. Meath, close to the sacred sites of Tara, Newgrange, Sliabh na Cailleach and Uísneach. The majority of the Irish Centre for Shamanic Studies courses are held at Dunderry Park. The centre also runs courses in yoga, meditation, dance therapy and hosts various healing retreats. The centre is available for rent week days, week- centre go towards the Oaktree Charitable Trust so if you are looking for somewhere to hold your course or retreat Dunderry Park is an ideal choice. Details: There is shared accommodation for up to 32 persons in 2, 3 and 4-bedded rooms. The workroom is 40 by 20 (12x6m) and can hold 100 persons seated. There is a full PA system and projector for use as well. You also have access to a custom built Cairn onsite.
