1 High School Happenings, Term 3, 2017 Devising drama and connecting to community Our weekly drama work is currently dedicated to the creation of a site-specific devised work that we will present in term 4. This piece will be borne of the groups exploration of our relationships to place and home, and to the question of whether places have memories or hold some of what has gone before. If place holds memory, can you heal that place and bring a new energy to it? Site specific theatre is created in connection to its location and we are very lucky to have an opportunity to develop this work for a location that embodies the very question we are seeking to explore...
2 This is a story about my neighbour. Following the Brisbane floods, a Katoomba man heard through friends, of a family that had lost their home and were looking for somewhere to stay. Living elsewhere at the time, he offered the family his home for 6 weeks while they got back on their feet. A lovely act of generosity towards people he didn t know. Sadly, it didn t go well. It took him 18 months to get the family to leave his home again and by the time they were gone, the house had been trashed broken windows, tiles and gyprock ripped from the walls his generosity had been thoroughly abused. In the meantime, this man also suffered a deep personal loss with the passing of his daughter and for a time, he was unable to do anything about the house. While it stood empty and broken, it was assumed to be abandoned and was further vandalised. Time has passed and this man is now well on the way to restoring the house... and this is where we come in. We were looking for a site where we could perform a piece about home; I was lying in bed one night trying to work out how we could find an empty house when suddenly it dawned on me that not only is there an empty house right next door, it is also a house that became the site of an awful abuse of generosity, a place of loss and a home in genuine need of healing. My neighbour s name is Colin. I went to him with our proposal late last term that our high school community comes together and does as many things as we are able to help him repair the house, and that he hosts our performance in his home at the end of this process. Essentially, I was asking whether he was willing to let another group of strangers into his home but this time seeking to repair the damage of the past and to create a new and positive memory in his home. He was deeply moved by the idea and, after giving it some thought, came back with a resounding yes. So this term and next, we are creating stories, preparing and repairing the place where we will tell our stories, bringing community to a man and home ready for healing, preparing to share and working together to leave a shared memory of generosity and our heartfelt contemplation of the meaning of home. By Georgia Adamson, Drama Teacher. English This term YEAR 8/9 are looking at WW2 poetry and a book study on "Break of Day". In writing we are focussing on annotating a poem and terminology related to this. We are then looking at the short response to poetry. Year 10 is a study of short fiction from The Boat, critical analysis and then composition.
3 Science This term in science, Y8-9 will be learning about astronomy, the study of everything outside the Earth - so a very broad theme indeed. This will include a star party evening at the Linden observatory, one Saturday night in August. They will also be studying the geometry of the golden proportion - where does it come from, and how do we experience it in the beautiful proportions of nature, including our own bodies. Spiral Nautilus PHI callipers 1 This term in science, Y10 will be continuing their learning about the evolution of life on Earth - the fossil record, global events that have altered the course of evolution, the evolutionary path of the mammals, the differences and similarities between monkeys and chimpanzees. Outdoor Education This term, we continue the Navigation work, conduct the Asgard Swamp Navigation exercise, and prepare for and do a 3 day hike over Mount Solitary! Out of doors education in practice.
4 Visual Art, Year 10 This term we are looking at art history through the eyes of women. We are asking, how have they influenced art, how have they been included and excluded from art history, what are some of the unique styles, materials and subjects that they have brought forward. We are starting with Georgia O'Keefe and ending with TextaQueen, so it will be quite a journey! From this we will develop a work inspired by what we have explored along the way. Year 8/9: The Power of One History 1945, an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, 2017 a Treat to Ban Nuclear Weapons. A visit from Japanese students from Nagasaki at the start of term, was a timely opportunity for our examination of perspectives and legacies of key events from the time of World War 11. We will give focus to both the European and Pacific-Asia arenas of the war. We also shift the lens to highlight stories of the power of one; of survival, of dignity; the acts of kindness, courage, peace and compassion that are sometimes left untold amidst the drama of war, both on the battlefield and the home front. Year 10: Multicultural Australia With the time of Federation, a White Australia Policy entrenches prejudice against non Europeans, yet it is also a moment when Australia is regarded a socially progressive nation in the field of democracy and rights. We live in an increasingly multicultural society, our identity as nation adjusting to the recognition of our place in the Asia-Pacific region. How has this come about? What have been the challenges and successes? What more do we need to do address to really feel ourselves and celebrate ourselves as a thriving multicultural nation.
5 Visitors from Nagasaki What a wonderful first week. We kicked off our time with Nagasaki visitors with ice breaker games run by high school students. They also joined us each day for lunch. During the stay we held a World Café Discussion on Nuclear Weapons, took part in a presentation/discussion about the Treaty to Ban Nuclear Weapons and co-created haiku that was read at the Friendship Day festival. The last farewell moment a spontaneous group hug out the front of the school.then straight back to history class to explore how multiculturalism is an anti-dote to war.including how exchanges such as with our Japanese visitors can change the way we talk about other especially in the terrible circumstances where other becomes enemy!
6 Music This term High school 8 and 9 are learning to fuse music with the visual action of stage and screen. Scoring sound effects and music behind film clip footage is laying the foundation to music for the school play next term. Students are using ideas derived from their research into famous film composers and their careers. This boost and the technical skills learnt playing Axel F and music from the film Amelie are providing the inspiration to composing ideas for an orchestral feast and a rich other worldly electronic sound-scape. Year 10 are feasting on Irish Music and the completion of recording compositions.
7 Year 8/9 Maths We started the term with a big mental stretch of algebra. The students expanded brackets and then learnt how to factorise an expression back into brackets. To recognise which is the highest common factor students need to know their times tables. We start each lesson with a warm up exercise where the students complete a times table quick quiz, there has definitely been an improvement in their recall of times table facts. Our next topic is statistics. Looking at the three averages, histograms, stem and leaf plots and comparing sets of data. Weaved into this topic is the sleep habits of teenagers. The students will record how much sleep they think they have. Then we will look at sleep hygiene how important it is to prepare for sleep. Did you know teenagers need as much sleep as a toddler! We will then collect their sleep data again and see if there is a difference. Then back for more algebra equations. We will end the term with earning money. Year 10 Year 10 enjoy financial mathematics. So we continued in Term 3 with earning money salary and wages and overtime. This will be followed by investigating data the shape of a frequency distribution, quartiles and interquartile range. We will end the topic by looking at statistics in the media. The last topic of the term will be geometry. Throughout all the topics there is constant revision of percentages, fractions, decimals and times table recall.
