1 Intelligence A confrontation with divinity, your own higher intelligence, is going to change you. You ll face blazing activation of your brain. A philosophy restricted to conventional language has no way of conceiving of an intelligence that doesn t work according to plan. Anyone with philosophical ambitions and a thoughtful desire to increase intelligence could learn how to use drugs effectively. Drugs, intelligently used as tools to enter other states of consciousness, are potentially beneficial. Every cell is an electro-chemical-social system more complicated than the city of New York with 2 billion years of accurate intelligence-energy memory built into the nucleus. Every man and woman who reaches the higher levels of spiritual and intellectual development feels the presence of a Higher Intelligence. If the behavior of an organism is intelligible only in relation to its environment, intelligent behavior implies an intelligent environment. The galaxy is intelligent. In general, the level of intelligence goes up for LSD takers; they become more than they were. In most people there is such a deplorable disparity between the intelligent and marvelous order of their bodies and the trivial preoccupations of their consciousness. Intelligence is not a separate, ordering faculty of the mind but a characteristic of the whole organism-environment relationship, the field of forces wherein lies the reality of a human being. New scientific findings are beginning to support beliefs of cultures thousands of years old, showing that our individual psyches are, in the last analysis, a manifestation of cosmic consciousness and intelligence that flows through all of existence. Tao signifies the energy of the universe as a way, current, course or flow which is at once intelligent and spontaneous. It s your own true self, the very energy and patterning of your bones, muscles and nerves.

3 The experiential insights from unusual states of consciousness suggest the existence of intangible and unfathomable creative intelligence aware of itself that permeates all realms of reality. The form of spirituality I am referring to is fully compatible with any level of intelligence, education, and specific knowledge of the information amassed by such disciplines as physics, biology, medicine, and psychology. The neural structures of the brain, upon which intelligence depends, are certainly not the deliberate creations of any conscious ego. (The ego knows nothing at all about the neural structures of the brain, let alone being able to create them.) The organism, the whole pattern of nerve and muscle, is more complex and intelligent than logical systems of arithmetic, geometry and grammar which are in fact nothing but inferior ritual. Life itself dances. The unconscious for Jung was not a junkyard of rejected instinctual tendencies, repressed memories and subconsciously assimilated prohibitions. He saw it as a creative and intelligent principle binding the individual to all humanity, nature and the entire cosmos. We felt ourselves get smarter, and looked into each other s eyes and loved each other for sharing the understanding that was making us both have these good vibes and this good smart thing happening together. It was very strong, very high. We were amazed to witness otherwise intelligent and open-minded persons doing everything in their power to instill fear, to cry danger, to slander the brain with negativity. (That was Timothy Leary.) Whether it is organic or inorganic, we are learning to see matter as patterns of energy, not of energy as if energy were a stuff, but an energetic pattern, moving order, active intelligence. You cannot take LSD once a week and stay rigidly rooted in a low-level ego game. You have to grow with the flow or you will stop taking LSD. You must hook up your inner power to a life of expanding intelligence. A high does of LSD in the right circumstances brings you into contact not only with your deep self but with other dimensions extraterrestrial intelligence, a collective mind, intelligent unity of life, living God, things that they don t understand and can t control and don t want free and available. A system of thinking that deliberately discards everything that cannot be weighed and measured does not have any opening for the recognition of creative cosmic intelligence, spiritual realities or such entities as transpersonal experiences or the collective unconscious. Each atom is a structure of detailed intricacy held together by energy of such speed and power that it eludes our conception. Each atom is a space-ship of galactic proportions and at the center of each galactic structure God places the entire staff of his atomic engineers. Do you understand the brilliance of the design? Huxley s Island expresses hope for mankind. It dramatizes the conviction that the drugs can be used, rather than condemned and neglected, and that finding a way to use them

4 well is a test for humanity. We should use our resources of intelligence, imagination, and moral discernment to face that test. I could see that the intricate organization both of the plants and of my own nervous system, like symphonies of branching complexity, were not just manifestations of intelligence, as if things like intelligence and love were in themselves substances or formless forces. It was rather that the pattern itself is intelligence and is love. I see consciousness and the human psyche as expressions and reflections of a cosmic intelligence that permeates the entire universe and all of existence. We are not just highly evolved animals with biological computers embedded inside our skulls; we are also fields of consciousness without limits, transcending time, space, matter, and linear causality. The mystical teachings of all ages revolve around the idea that the exclusive pursuit of material goals and values by no means expresses the full potential of human beings. According to this point of view, humanity is an integral part of the creative cosmic energy and intelligence and is, in a sense, identical to and commensurate with it. The observations of the last few decades have drastically changed our understanding of the relationship between consciousness and matter and of the dimensions of the psyche. They show consciousness as an equal partner of matter, or possibly even supraordinated to matter, and creative intelligence as inextricably woven into the fabric of the universe. When the nonordinary states are opened up to them, even scientifically cautious and highly intelligent people of our own time and culture find these experiences deeply moving and personally meaningful, providing them with dramatic breakthroughs in their beliefs. Which is better to be born stupid into an intelligent society or intelligent into an insane one? (No one is born stupid as such. The insane society will make them stupid. LSD cures the stupidity, but the society itself remains insane. When LSD cures the society, then it will the Age of Aquarius.) America was experiencing a quantum leap in intelligence. For the first time in our history, a large and influential sector of the populace was coming to disrespect institutional authority, not as members of organized dissident groups but as intelligent individuals, highly selective political consumers who demanded responsive and effective leadership, which no existing party, no religion, no labor union seemed able to provide. If this all ends with the human race leaving no more trace of itself in the universe than a system of electronic patterns, why should that trouble us? For that is exactly what we are now! Flesh or plastic, intelligence or mechanism, nerve or wire, biology or physics it all seems to come down to this fabulous electronic dance, which, at the macroscopic level, presents itself as the whole gamut of forms and substances. We were convinced that drug effects were almost entirely determined by what people around the tripper did. If the environment radiated safety, beauty, wisdom, then even neurotic subjects would have experiences that were safe, aesthetic and revelatory. The theory held that all bad trips could be converted to good trips if the environment was intelligently managed to provide support.

5 Western scientific disciplines have described the universe as an infinitely complex mechanical system of interacting, discrete particles and separate objects. In this context, matter appears to be solid, inert, passive and unconscious; life, consciousness and creative intelligence are seen as insignificant accidents and derivatives of material development. (Einstein understood. Will the other Western scientists ever wake up?) Chronic LSD users tend to be above average in intelligence. Each cell is intelligent. Increasing intelligence and awareness is a team sport. Intelligence evolves when the occult and magical become the objective-scientific. Light is intelligent. LSD could reprogram nervous systems to accelerate consciousness and intelligence. Make contact with the ultimate source of intelligence: DNA Organic pattern is another name for intelligence. The people who had trouble in school were usually more intelligent, so they got bored. The ultimate reality is alive, conscious and intelligent. The unconscious is at root creative and intelligent and thus ultimately trustworthy. The universe is full of invisible intelligence. The world is intelligible only as a revelation of the mind of God. There are resources of courage, creativity and higher intelligence in all of us. Where the organism is intelligent, the environment is also intelligent. I learned that the brain is an underutilized computer, that normal consciousness is one drop in an ocean of intelligence, that consciousness and intelligence can be systematically expanded, that the brain can be reprogrammed. I spent a long time watching the play of life around me, listening to the gossip of trees, insects and animals, discovering that there is one biological intelligence that expresses herself through the various living forms. Feeling not that I was drugged but that I was in an unusual degree open to reality, I tried to discern the meaning, the inner character of the dancing patterns which constituted myself and the gardens and the whole dome of the night with its colored stars. All at once, it became obvious that the whole thing was love-play. This single source was not just love as we ordinarily understand it. It was also intelligence. He was a really smart, well-coordinated, psychedelic tripper. A starship tripper. a sort of intelligent and superconscious space containing the whole cosmos as a mirror contains images a structure so subtly ordered, that is, intelligent, that conscious thought is as yet far from being able to describe it beauty, fun, philosophic wonder, religious revelation, increased intelligence, mystical romance, glamour, sexuality consciousness processes guided by cosmic intelligence rather than mechanical happenings contacted an Energy or an Intelligence that seemed to deserve the description superhuman
