Mohan. FROM THE CHIEF EDITOR My dear brothers, sisters & children, Jai Mohyal! Welcome to the New Year! We have left behind another year and are welcoming a New Year, full of new hope and new aspirations. On this occasion, I would like to recapitulate major events in the year just gone by. The year started off with the holding of the All India Mohyal Conference in January The two-day Conference, held at the Kulachi Hansraj Model School, Ashok Vihar, New Delhi, was presided over by one of our most eminent Mohyals, Lt. Gen. G.L. Bakshi (Retd.) PVSM. One of the highlights of the Conference was the conferment of Mohyal Ratna Award on Bk. S.K. Chhibber IAS (Retd.). Several other awards, viz, Mohyal Gaurav, Excellence in Professional Achievements, Mohyal Sewa Puraskar etc. were also given away. Resolutions on Women s Empowerment & Youth Empowerment were also adopted at the Conference. Besides the Business Sessions, there was also lot of merry-making, lighting of Bonfire and advance celebration of Lohri festival. The Conference was an outstanding success, where Bali Sahib had given us a new slogan Vibrant Mohyal, which essentially summed up the character of the Mohyal community on the march. The next important event was the Republic Day 2012 celebrations at the KR Bali Mohyal Memorial Nursery School, Dehradun, where the tiny tots gave cultural performances to the delight of the gathering present. September saw the Pratibhashalee Vidyarthi Sammaan function, on the 16 th of the month. The highlight of the event was the Declamation Contest for the students conducted by Dr. Ashok Lav, in which cash awards were given to those winning the first, second & third positions. The celebrations for the year culminated with the inauguration of the Mohyal Ashram, Vrindavan, on the 25 th November 2012, where more than 1200 Mohyals took part. Even though the function was memorable, we sorely missed the presence and guidance of our revered President, Mohyal Ratna Rzd. B.D. Bali, who could not be present, because of the doctor s advice not to exert himself. Hopefully, by the grace of God, he will be fit and come back to normal soon to 3

4 continue to give his valuable guidance and leadership in the coming year. I am now looking forward to the New Year, for working with all of you, in our march towards further progress and welfare of our community. In this regard, I would like to share with you about some of the major events, plans & projects that the GMS has chalked out for execution during the new year. First, we are holding the interaction meeting with the Presidents and Secretaries of the affiliated local sabhas, on the 20 th January 2013, to discuss issues of mutual interest and of interest to the community s welfare. Some action points for the New Year are also likely to be discussed in this meeting. We would like the Mohyal youth to take more interest in the activities of the local sabhas and, in that direction, I would urge the local sabhas to have special meetings for the Mohyal youth, say, once in a quarter, where the youth of the community shall be encouraged to participate voice and share their dreams, concerns & aspirations. We are also planning to inaugurate the Mohyal Ashram, Goverdhan, during the year. I am sure that it will be as grand an affair as the inaugural ceremony of MA Vrindavan. We also propose to hold the AGM of the GMS some time in March. There will also be the regular annual events such as Pratibhashalee Sammaan function, Mohyal Diwas celebrations, Matrimonial Melas etc. etc., apart from the Annual Melas of our various affiliated Local Sabhas. As for new projects, we have in mind the setting up of a Pathological Laboratory at Yamuna Nagar. The GMS is also considering entering the educational sector and is seriously on the look-out for a suitable piece of land, in or near about Delhi/NCR, for setting up a school; and, with the blessings and co-operation of the community, we shall be successful in realizing this dream too. I am sure that the year will have never a dull moment. With the co-operation of all of you, the GMS as well as the Mohyal community is going from strength to strength in our endeavour to further widen the horizon of activities in the interest of the community. I wish you all A very Happy & Prosperous NEW YEAR O.P. The Managing Committee members, who receive individual invitations to participate in such Melas, should bear their travel expenses themselves, in case they wish to attend the Melas. He also stated that the GMS should send its representative(s) to the Melas organized by all affiliated sabhas (and not only to certain selected sabhas), so that no local sabha felt neglected. He knew so much of so many things, be it cinema, personalities, happenings, that there was never a dull moment in his company. A fatherly figure, who could communicate from a little child to an old person. At the core, he was a simple, unassuming, un-complaining good natured person spreading joy amongst all, who came in his contact. Despite his having been struck by the gravest of personal tragedies, he stood Tall & like a Rock of Gibraltar, not allowing them to affect his inter-personal relations. His knowledge & love for urdu poetry was par excellence and, being not only a permanent agenda item, but was the Grand Finale of our meetings, which was not only relished by each one, but truly looked forward to. There can be no two opinions that we will miss him and the vacuum created by his absence will never be filled. All members of the South Zone Mohyal Sabha wish to place on record their gratitude to the late Bhai K N Chhibbar, for enriching us and we will always miss him. A befitting & apt tribute would be to recite a few Urdu couplets, on Life & Death by Zauq : Laayi hayaat aaye, qazaa le chalee, chalay Apni khushi na aye,na apni khushi chalay Behtar to hai yehi kih na duniya se dil lagay Par kya kaein jo kaam na bedil lagi chalay Ho umar e- khizar bhi to ho maaloom waqt-e- marg Hum kya rahe yahaan, abhi aaye abhi chalay OM SHANTI OM MM Mehta, Secretary VASUNDHARA ENCLAVE Date: Venue: R/o Mr. GL Chhibber Attendance: 18 In Chair: Shri B M Bakshi After the recitation of Mohyal prayer, two minutes silence was observed in the memory of those Mohyal brothers and sisters, who had left for their heavenly abode during the month of November The minutes of the last meeting were read out and confirmed unanimously. (First of a series on Routine Rituals) SERIES 1 Why do we light a lamp? In almost every Indian home, a lamp is lit daily, before the altar of the Lord. In some houses, it is lit at dawn, in some, twice a day at dawn and dusk and, in a few, it is maintained continuously Akhanda Deepa. All auspicious functions commence with the lighting of the lamp, which is often maintained right through the occasion. Light symbolizes knowledge, and darkness ignorance. The Lord is the Knowledge Principle (Chaitanya), who is the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge. Hence light is worshiped as the Lord himself. Knowledge removes ignorance just as light removes darkness. Also knowledge is a lasting inner wealth by which all outer achievement can be accomplished. Hence we light the lamp to bow down to knowledge as the greatest of all forms of wealth. Why not light a bulb or tube light? That too would remove darkness. But the traditional oil lamp has a further spiritual significance. The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes our vaasanas, or negative tendencies, and the wick, the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the vaasanas get slowly exhausted and the ego too finally perishes. The flame of a lamp always burns upwards. Similarly we should acquire such knowledge as will take us towards higher ideals. Whilst lighting the lamp we thus pray: Deepajyothi parabrahma Deepa sarva tamopahaha Deepena saadhyate saaram Sandhyaa deepo namostute I prostrate to the dawn/dusk lamp; whose light is the Knowledge Principle (the Supreme Lord), which removes the darkness of ignorance and by which all can be achieved in life. SERIES 2 Why do we do Namaste? Indians greet each other with Namaste. The two palms are placed together in front of the chest and the head bows whilst saying the word Namaste. This greeting is for all people younger than us, of our own age, those older than us, friends, and even strangers. There are five forms of formal traditional greeting enjoined in the Shaastras, of which Namaskaram is one. This is understood as prostration, but it actually refers to paying homage, as we do today, when we greet each other with a Namaste. Namaste could be just a casual or formal greeting, a cultural convention or an act of worship. However, there is much more to it than meets the eye. In Sanskrit, Namah + te = Namaste means I bow to you my greetings, salutations or prostration to you. Namaha can also be literally interpreted as na ma (not mine). It has a spiritual significance of negating or reducing one s ego in the presence of others. The real meeting between people is the meeting of their minds. When we greet one another, we do so with Namaste, which means, may our minds meet, indicated by the folded palms placed before the chest. The bowing down of the head is a gracious form of extending friendship, in love and humility. The spiritual meaning is even deeper. The life force, the divinity, the self or the lord in me is the same, in all. Recognizing this oneness, with the meeting of palms, we salute, with head bowed, the divinity in the person we meet. That is why, sometimes, we close our eyes as we do Namaste to a revered person or the Lord as if to look within. The gesture is often accompanied by words like Ram Ram, Jai Shri Krishna, Namo Narayana, Jai Siya Ram, Om Shanti etc indicating the recognition of this divinity. When we know this significance, our greeting does not remain just a superficial gesture or word, but paves the way for a deeper communion with another, in an atmosphere of love and respect. Those who are the beloved of God, in whatever place they gather and whomsoever they may meet, must evince, in their attitude towards God, and in the manner of their celebration of His praise and glory, such humility and submissiveness that every atom of dust beneath their feet may attest the depth of their devotion. Saying of Baha u llah Renunciation of the fruits of action is the centre around which the Gita is woven. It is the central sun around which devotion, knowledge, and the rest revolve like planets. M K Gandhi Humility is the virtue of the cultured...it is but human to make mistakes, to fall a prey to some temptation, to get enchanted by some false emotion, or to get carried away with a wrong intention. The joys of old age are greater than those of youth. Your mind is engaged in spiritual and mental athletics. Nature slows down your body so that you may have the opportunity to meditate on things divine. 2. Age is not the flight of years; it is the dawn of wisdom in the mind of man. The most productive years of your life can be from 65 to Diets and exercises won t keep you young. As a man thinketh, so is he. Fear of old age can bring about physical and m ental deterioration. The thing I greatly feared has come upon me. 4. You cannot see your mind, but you know you have a mind. You cannot see spirit, but you know that the spirit of the game, the spirit of the artist, the spirit of the musician, and the spirit of the speaker are real. Likewise, the spirit of goodness, truth, and beauty moving in your mind and heart is real. You cannot see life, but you know you are alive. 5. God is life, and that is your life now. Life is selfrenewing, eternal, and indestructible, and is the reality of all men. You live forever, because your life is God s life. 6. Patience, kindness, love, goodwill, joy, happiness, wisdom, and understanding are qualities, which never grow old. Cultivate them and express them, and remain young in mind and body. 7. We do not count a man s years until he has nothing else to count. Your faith and convictions are not subject to decay. 8. You grow old when you cease to dream, and when you lose interest in life. You grow old if you are irritable, crotchety, petulant, and cantankerous. Fill your mind with the truths of God and radiate the sunshine of His love-this is youth. 9. Your retirement is a new venture. Take up new studies and new interests. You can now do the things you always wanted to do when you were so busy making a living. Give your attention to living life. 10. The fruits of old age are love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. You are a son of Infinite Life, which knows no end. You are a child of Eternity. You are wonderful! 11. You are needed. Some of the great philosophers, artists, scientists, writers, and others accomplished their greatest work after they were 80 years old. 12. 25 and strength to the family to bear the loss. On this sad occasion, Smt. Prabha Mehta donated Rs. to the GMS. Mehta Prabha Chhibber A-8, Kasturba Niketan Complex Lajpat Nagar II, New Delhi Shri Ravi Dutt Vaid ( ) Shri Ravi Dutt Vaid, s/o the late Bk. Hari Ram Vaid & Smt. Parmeshwari Devi Vaid, r/o C- 58A, Gangotri Enclave, Alaknanda, New Delhi, breathed his last on the 23rd November The family originally belonged to Dehra Bakshian, Distt Rawalpindi (now in Pak.). He is survived by his wife Smt. Sureshta Vaid, sons Sheetal Vaid & Sharad Vaid, daughters-in-law, Sangeeta Vaid & Yogita Vaid, and grandchildren Tejas, Shriya & Rashi. Shri Ravi Dutt grew up in a prominent and well-educated family, with high values and rich heritage. His father was a qualified civil engineer, having received his BE (Civil) degree from the Engineering College, Roorkee (now lit, Roorkee), in something rare those days. He held coveted executive assignments, commensurate with his qualifications and experience. Following this tradition, Shri Ravi Dutt also gave his sons the best of education, both of whom are engineers & MBAs and are well-settled in professional assignments, one in India and the other in the USA. Their spouses are also professionally qualified and are working at good posts in MNCs. Shri Ravi Dutt, himself, after graduating from Scottish Church College, Kolkata, joined as an Officer in the Cabinet Secretariat (RAW). During his long service career, he held various intelligence appointments, worked as a Diplomat with the Indian Embassies and Missions abroad. He retired in 1991, as Consul, in the Consulate of lndia, Zahidan (Iran). He had a remarkable and distinguished career, during which he won many accolades and medals. He was gifted with a cool, calm and pleasant temperament, coupled with characteristic traits of humility, respectfulness, pleasant mannerisms and was deeply affectionate. He started enjoying his retired life, in his newly acquired house. Unfortunately, soon after a trip to USA, nearly nine years ago, he suffered a stroke, which left his left side completely paralyzed. His wife, Smt. Sureshta Vaid, displayed an extreme degree of courage, dedication & devotion, in providing him with proper medical care, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and all other comforts. Every member of the family stood by him, round the clock, and spared no efforts in reducing his discomfort and bringing as much normalcy into his life, as possible, despite his disability. He had happily reconciled himself to this condition and was leading a normal life. But a slight injury to his foot became septic and despite a surgery at the Batra Hospital, New Delhi, he could not survive. He was a staunch Mohyal, and contributed generously to good and noble causes, within the fraternity, as well as to other needy organizations. In response to an appeal in the Mohyal Mitter, for rendering financial help to a needy ailing Mohyal, he was regularly sending money, every month, for nearly three years, to this unknown Mohyal sister. This aid continued till the death of the recipient. The sudden death of Shri Ravi Dutt Vaid has left a big void, which will take years, for the well-knit family, to overcome. May God bless his soul and give strength to the family to bear the loss! On this occasion, the family has donated Rs. 10,000/- to the GMS, to be used for the education of Mohyal children. S.L. Bali It was with a profound sense of personal loss that I heard of the death of my friend, Kanwal Netar Chhibber. He leaves behind three daughters, Kiran, Priya and Sharmila. He was just six months older than me and we always joked that he was my protective cover. I felt safe while he was around. My safety cover is now gone. Kanwal Netar was son of an illustrious man, Bhai Sri Ram Chhibber, who became a close associate of the historic personality, Lawrence of Arabia. His cousin was the well-known martyr, Bhai Bal Mukand Chhibber, an associate of Shahid Bhagat Singh. Bhai Sri Ram s elder son was born in Iraq and was named Iraqi Ram! Kanwal was born in Rawalpindi, where the family had a famous retail outlet of perfumes. The family also owned a Cinema Hall in Mandi Baha-ud-Din. After partition, the family came to Meerut and set up a flourishing real estate business. Their firm collaborated with the DLF and built the well-known Delhi colonies of South Extension, Kailas etc.that s how perhaps Kanwal picked up the business genes. Kanwal Netar himself was a well-travelled man, and had visited many countries, including France, Germany, UK and USA, and had met famous persons like Chhatwal, Swaraj Pal and others. His wife, Pushpa Chhibber, was a well-known educationist and the Principal of Delhi Public School. For the last several years, Kanwal ji and myself had been meeting each other at the Delhi s South Zone Mohyal Sabha. His company was so interesting, that I (and I am sure others too) tried to sit near him. In the small talk before and after the meeting, he would tell stories of men and events with a personal touch. He knew the history of all prominent Mohyal families. His memory was sharp. Mention to him the name of any prominent Mohyal and he would tell you all about his parents, relations & ancestors and what good or not-sogood deeds they did in life. His knowledge was not confined to Mohyals. He would relate interesting anecdotes of Sir Sikandar Hayat Khan, Khizar Hyat Khan and other social and political leaders of prepartition Punjab. I once wrote a satire, titled: Wonderful Mohyal. Its first line was: Pocket empty, neck stiff. But Kanwal Netar Chhibber was different. He earned a lot of money. His pocket was full. Still he never allowed his neck to become stiff. He quickly un-learnt the ways of the pre-partition Mohyal landlords, and adapted himself to the wise ways of the business world. He ran a modern retail outlet in the posh business area of Vasant Vihar. But he was a very wise man. He did what few businessmen do. He closed his business, when the time came and led a peaceful retired life. Passing away of his son, Ravi Rupam, at 42, was a tragedy. His life was never the same again. Though his daughters were ever insisting that he should live with them, he chose the wise course of living independently in his large house. He was modern in outlook, but retained all the traditional wise ways too. Talking and listening to him were both a rewarding experience. He would listen carefully and then give a serious remark in a light manner. That was his art. He would speak gently. He would never offend anyone. He had a great sense of humour. His humour was subtle but penetrating. His words would entertain and instruct at the same time. He was really what we call in Punjabi, gudaya-hoya aadmi. Sitting near Chhibber Sahib, you felt the warmth of his personality. He made others feel comfortable. Even his criticism was hidden in pleasant words. Once we were invited to hold a meeting in a drawing room which was perhaps over-decorated with pictures. He said: I feel I am sitting in a museum. Urdu poetry was his passion. He will bring to the meetings his old note book, which had begun to show its age. We all eagerly awaited the end of the meeting, and then almost simultaneously, all would shout, Time now for Chhibber Sahib s Urdu Sheyar-o-Shairi. I hear Chhibber Sahib telling me to end my say with a few Urdu couplets on life and death. I borrow from Zauq: Laayi hayaat aaye, qazaa le chalee, chalay Apni khushi na aaye, na apni khushi chalay Behtar to hai yahi kih na duniya se dil lagay Par kya kaein jo kaam na bedil lagi chalay Ho umar-e-khizar bhi to ho maaloom waqt-e-marg Hum kya rahe yahaan, abhi aaye abhi chalay Kanwal Netar Chhibber was King of a man. As they say for the King, let s say for him: Kanwal is dead, long live Kanwal! Addition to Trust Shri S.N. Dutta, r/o 8/11, Kalkaji Extension, New Delhi , has donated Rs to the GMS, for addition to the Ch. Harnam Das Dutt & Preetam Dei and Pushpa Dutta Trust. With this addition, the balance in the trust is Rs. 3,96,300/-. Refining Fire Welcome to thy wrath and to thy glow! Our welcome be to thy flame! Let thy missiles burn our enemies. As per legend, a Brahmin, Rahab, travelled from Punjab to Arabia and became a disciple of Hussain. In the battle of Karbala, in the 7th century, he fought along with Hussain, against the army of Yazid, who had usurped power. Rahab had many sons, some of whom were killed in the battle. After the battle, Rahab, along with his surviving sons, returned to India. The descendants of Rahab then came to be known as Hussaini Brahmins. A UK-based NRI, Shamsuddin Agha, is now capturing the story of Hussaini Brahmins devotion to the Imam in a documentary. They are Hindus but revere Imam Hussain so much that they observe Muharram in great solemnity. I am touched by their love and respect for the Imam, says 77-year-old Agha, theatre director of Indian origin, in UK. According to Agha s research, famous Hussaini Brahmins, who are also called Dutts or Mohiyals, included Hindi film actors Sunil Dutt, Gita Bali & Om Prakash and lyricist Anand Bakhshi. Sunil Dutt s daughter, Priya Dutt, told me that her father strictly observed Muharram, and, that, in the first 10 days, he would not participate in any celebrations. I am interviewing her, for the film soon, says Agha. The filmmaker also plans to shoot Muharram processions. I am told that, at many places, on the path of the processions, Hindu families in Mumbai put up sabeel (pitchers to quench thirst in commemoration of the denial of water to Hussain and his disciples at Karbala for three days before his martyrdom). This is a strong message of India s composite culture and I want to capture it, Agha points out. From the recitation of Marsiya (mournful poetry) to sermons, describing the trauma Hussain and his disciples suffered, Agha aims to capture different aspects of Muharram. Nowhere else is Muharram observed like it is done in India. Here, many Hindus participate, and prominent among them are Hussaini Brahmins. This carries a big message for communal harmony, adds Agha.
