It was noted that complaints were on the rise during the last three years. This was attributed to the collapse of the postal system. While we spend around Rs lakhs per year for bringing out the magazine, we were being stingy in spending money to ensure that the magazine reaches all the subscribers, without fail, in time. One way of generating revenue for the magazine was to publish advertisements. Shri G.L. Datta Josh, who had been in the postal department, opined that there is no objection to advertisements being published in the Mohyal Mitter. It was also noted that, earlier, the Mohyal Mitter used to carry advertisements. After some more discussion, it was decided that we should collect advertisements for the Mohyal Mitter, after which we can consider dispatching the magazine to all by Book Post. As per the decision taken in the last meeting, Mohyal Mitter had been dispatched by Book Post, individually, to the subscribers in Noida, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram and Gurgaon, and, as per our information the magazine has been received by all the subscribers. Mohyal Bhawans of Local Sabhas: Referring to the decision taken in the last meeting that the GMS should obtain and keep in its record the registration documents of the Mohyal Bhawans, constructed with grants from the GMS, Shri P.L. Mehta clarified that the idea was to ensure that the Bhawans were being used for the welfare of the community. He felt that the local sabhas concerned should send Utilisation Certificates in respect of these Bhawans to the GMS, every year. Display Boards of Langar Fund Donors at Haridwar: Members requested that the Display Boards at the Mohyal Ashram Haridwar regarding the Langar Fund donors be updated urgently; and this should be an ongoing process. Several suggestions had been made at the meeting, including the creation of a Sewa Dal of Mohyal youth, with representatives from each local sabha. The Sewa Dal will coordinate with the GMS, in organising the Youth Camps, Medical Camps, social networking etc. He stated that these will help in strengthening the bonds amongst the youth within the community. 6 Dr. TRIPTA DUTTA Numero Uno Paediatric Surgeon of North India An Appreciation of Her Service to Humanity By: Prof. J. S. Bali Col. J. D. Kumar, my neighbour in Nirman Vihar, Delhi, came to me in the 1990s and asked me to put in a word to Dr. Tripta Dutta, for his grandson, who needed an operation for malignancy in the throat. I remarked, She is the best paediatric surgeon of Delhi. He corrected me, She is the best in India. In her usual modesty, Dr. Tripta told me, Say North India, not India. Dr. Tripta s intellectual brilliance is guided by her self-effacing and humane nature, making her popular among all. A brilliant student (she passed her school exam with 88 per cent marks), Dr. Tripta was advised to take up the medical profession, by her maternal uncle, Mehta Ranbir Singh. She had lost both her father, Jagan Nath Dutta (Indian Forest Service), and her mother, within two months of each other, when she was just 14. Those were the turbulent days of Dr. Tripta s maternal uncle, Mehta Des Raj, took all the four sisters and a brother under his care at Khanna. Mehta Des Raj, it may be said here, opened his house to a large number of relations. At one time, I counted more than 50 persons taking food at his long dining table. Dr. Tripta passed through the medical colleges of Ludhiana & Calcutta, and passed MBBS, with flying colours. Dr. (Col.) Iyer advised her to take up paediatric surgery as her speciality. She joined the Safdarjung Hospital, where she organized the Paediatric Surgery Department and became its head. She went to London and acquired the coveted qualification of FRCS Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons - again with brilliant colours. In the late 1970s, I was living in the Government multi-storeyed apartments on the Ring Road, New Delhi, not far from the Safdarjung Hospital. One day, Dr. Tripta gave us a pleasant surprise. Coming in, she said, Give me something to eat immediately. They are preparing a patient for me for surgery, and I have rushed here since I have not eaten anything. Dr. Tripta was so devoted to her child-surgery work that she would often forego her meals even. Such devotion, such brilliance, such openness and such humility, have made Dr. Tripta a darling for all whom she met. One day, in 1980, I told Dr. Tripta that I was taking Voluntary Retirement from the Government of India. After a couple of days, she dropped in again and announced: Mamaji, I am also taking voluntary retirement. I have completed 20 years of service. I would now take up private practice. Dr. Tripta helped run the Narendra Nath Mohan Hospital of Mohan Nagar, where her elder sister, Kaushalya, was the matriarch of the family. Dr. Tripta has also been associated with most of the major private hospitals of Delhi, like Ganga Ram, Tirath Ram, Mool Chand and St. Stephen s. She has been attending national and international meets of the profession of paediatrics in India and abroad. Ask Dr. Tripta This is a household sentence heard in scores of families of near and far relations, and of innumerable friends. She may be a paediatric surgeon, but she became a willing medical adviser for all of us. When a malignancy was detected in my urinary bladder, it was she who organized the surgery, though it was done by her colleague. Help Others is a slogan for many. But it is Dr. Tripta s Mantra of life. It has endeared her to all. Dr. Tripta s house became a refuge for all relations, near and far. Her only brother, Yog Raj, and his wife, Ladi, both lived and died in her house. Once, after visiting her house, I told my wife, Tripta ke ghar mein to mela laga rehta hai. Asked about this phenomenon, Dr. Tripta replied, I am like that. I like company. Dr. Tripta has a great capacity to suffer fools. She carries no grudge against anyone. Further asked why she did not marry? Her answer I was so busy studying, marriage never occurred to me. I was already 37 when I got my FRCS. For 30 years now, Dr. Tripta s landlord s daughter, Saroj, has been a willing friend, assistant and manager of her household. I asked her What was it which endeared Tripta to all?. Saroj just uttered one word, Humility. Seeing physicians and surgeons curing everyone s ills, one tends to forget that they also possess the same vulnerable body. A spinal cord tumour has left Dr. Tripta paralyzed in both her legs, for two and a half years now. A recent bout of pneumonia has further weakened her. A philosopher s words come to my mind: Give me one rose and a kind word while I am still around, rather than a truck load of flowers when I am gone. Let us remember with gratitude Dr. Tripta Dutta s life-long services to humanity. Prof. J.S. Bali, 89, is a Natural Resources Conservationist, and lives at A-1, North Villas, Chandanhola (Mehrauli), New Delhi ; Tel: ; July 30,2013 BE HAPPY! These two words are among the most potent ones in our language. Gloom creates a mental structure which prevents the flow of constructive thoughts. Think of the times when you were gloomy and sad. Were you inspired to do big things? Did you conceive any ideas which could add to your prosperity? Did you feel ambitious to blaze new trails? The answer to all of these questions is, of course, no. Think of the times when you were exuberant, when every fiber of your being was scintillating with joy. Didn t you have the urge to go places and do things? Projects which under normal conditions might appear laborious to perform seemed like nothing at all. Be happy! If you have problems (and who hasn t) be happy that with the knowledge you have gained, you can master them instead of being mastered by them. How can I be happy with all the worries I have? we often hear. Since gloom can do nothing except block your road to freedom, doesn t it behoove one to use his ingenuity in finding ways of becoming happy? Read the newspapers and see how many stories there are about people who would be happy to be in your position. You ll soon be able to understand how well off you are. Then it will not be hard to let the sunshine of happiness show through so that you can begin thinking in terms of things to do to solve your problems instead of permitting them to hold you back. Dear all, The Union of India had filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court (SC), against the Judgement of the Delhi HC, upholding the Judgement of the Principal Bench, CAT, New Delhi, for re-fixing the pension of pre-2006 pensioners from , which was dismissed on Not finding the coverage of this important news in the media, I sent a note to The Tribune on 4th August, given below. A Press Correspondent contacted me for more details on the subject. The entire struggle for justice launched by the Central Govt. S 29 (SAG) Pensioners Association and the Govt. going up to the highest altar of judiciary trying to defend their implementation orders, which were in contravention to the recommendations of 6th CPC accepted by the Cabinet was explained in detail. The Tribune has covered the story on the 9th August, which is reproduced below. N.P. Mohan, 1023 Sector 15 B, Chandigarh. Tel , (M) (My Note dated the 4 th August 2013, sent to the Tribune) CENTRAL GOVT. PRE-2006 PENSIONERS GET JUSTICE FROM JUDICIARY Pre-2006 pensioners at the level of Joint Secretary and below have been deprived of correct pension as per the accepted recommendations of Sixth Central Pay Commission for the last 7 years. Central Govt. S 29 (SAG) Pensioners Association initiated the fight for justice through legal course and got a judgement from Principal Bench CAT, New Delhi in November 2011 directing re-fixation of pension of all pre 2006 pensioners from within three months. The Govt. filed a petition in Delhi High Court which was dismissed on upholding the judgement of CAT, New Delhi. Despite losing the case in the High Court, the Govt. prolonged the litigation process, little realising the agony of the old pensioners, by filing an SLP in the Supreme Court on , which was dismissed by double bench of SC on It is high time that after having dragged the pensioners to the highest court of land and losing the case, the Govt. puts an end to perpetuating the harassment of old pensioners and re-fix the pension forthwith correctly from as per directive of CAT, reconfirmed by Delhi High Court and Supreme Court without any further delay and let not the obduracy of bureaucracy come in the way of belated justice. Railways npmohan34@gmail.com. 4 th August, 2013" (News Report published in The Tribune) CENTRE FAILS TO IMPLEMENT SC ORDER ON PENSIONS Aarti Kapur/TNS Chandigarh, August 8 Since no new notification has been issued, thousands of Central Government pensioners are still in the dark as to when the Union Government would disburse the arrears. The government owes them arrears since January 1, 2006, after an anomaly under the Sixth Pay Commission was corrected. On July 29, 2013, the double bench of the Supreme Court had dismissed the Special Leave Petition of the Union Government at the preliminary stage filed against the Delhi High Court verdict on the issue. A 93-year-old retired Railways employee, Jagjeet Singh, has been running from pillar to post to find out when his revised pension in arrears would be disbursed. Recently, the government had clubbed all the pay scales in each of the pay band together and began paying the minimum amount due to pensioners in each pay band. The Sixth Pay Commission had introduced broad pay bands, replacing individual scales, and had provided that pension of employees, who retired prior to 2006, will not be less than 50 per cent of the minimum emoluments in the pay band plus grade pay with effect from January 1, The said recommendation was accepted and implemented. However, the government later stated that the minimum pay would imply the minimum pay of the pay band itself and not the minimum pay corresponding to the fitment of the scale held prior to For a bright future in Computers join MERIT Mohyal Mitter / SEPTEMBER

19 GMS FOUNDING FATHERS PASSION FOR EDUCATION By: Ch.G.L.Datta Josh (Vice President GMS) About 150 years ago, an era erupted giving birth to two historic organizations of the country, namely, the Indian National Congress and the Arya Samaj. During that period, on May 24, 1891, the General Mohyal Sabha was established by nine devoted, dedicated and staunch Mohyal stalwarts of that time, viz., Rzd. Jogdhian Bali, Bk. Munshi Ram Dass Chibber, Bk. Gokul Chand Chibber, Ch. Ganesh Das Datt, Ch. Ram Bhaj Datt, Mehta Dhera Mal Datt, Ch. Hira Singh Datt, Mehta Lalchand Mohan and Rzd. Maharaj Kishan Vaid. In fact, they were the torch bearers of both the movements. The contribution of Mohyals to the Arya Samaj was truly great. The blind sage, Swami Virjananda, who was the mentor of Swami Dayanand ji, was a Mohyal; Dr. Lachhman Dass, a renowned Civil Surgeon, had thrown away his job to attend to Swami Ji at Ajmer, when he breathed his last; he was a veteran Mohyal too. Ch Ram Bhaj Datt and Bhai Parmanand Chibber were front row freedom fighters The former was imprisoned under the Defence of India Rules, lodged in Dera Ismail Khan Jail, and his property confiscated, while the latter was incarcerated for five years in the Cellular Jail in Andamans. Even at present, a large number of Mohyals are in the service of the motherland in various capacities. While Sunil Datt & his beloved wife, Nargis Datt, had passed away, their daughter, Ms. Priya Datt is a Member of Parliament; and Himachal Pradesh has a Mohyal Minister. There has also been political representation from J&K. In the field of education, our President Mohyal Ratna Rzd. B.D. Bali, is the Vice President of the DAV Managing Committee, which had once been chaired by Dr. G.L. Datta, then Vice Chancellor of Vikramaditya University, Ujjain (M.P.) The penetrating passion of our founding fathers, both for the Arya Samaj and in the field of education, is unveiled below: Bk. Munshi Ram Dass Chibbber was himself a scholar of Urdu & Persian and was keen on education being prevalent among the Mohyal masses, specially the younger generation, from the primary standard onwards. He himself was a Tutor of Urdu and Persian to the ruling British elite and his pupils included such formidable personalities as Lord & Lady Minto, Lady Curzon, Lord & Lady Hardinge and Field Marshal Roberts, C-in-C of India. He donated Rs. 30,000/, for the DAV College, Lahore, and Rs. 20,000/-, to the GMS for the Mohyal Ashram, Lahore, which was meant for the students who had no other accommodation at Lahore. A Block in the Ashram was named after him. Bk. Gokul Chand Chhibber was a pillar of the Arya Samaj and had left his indelible mark in the shape of institutions which he founded, the Arya Samaj temple, DAV Boys and Girls Schools at Peshawar and Abbottabad (NWFP). He was a co-founder of the DAV College, Lahore, and worked shoulder to shoulder with Mahatma Hans Raj and Sher-e-Punjab Lala Lajpat Rai. Bakshi Sahib was called Sher-e-Sarhad by revolutionary Lala ji. It is in Mohyal records that he managed to get a school constructed within 3 days (from Friday to Sunday), when it was feared that the plot of land for the school may be cancelled. Mehta Dhera Mal Datt was associated with the Arya Samaj and remained Editor of Mohyal Mitter for a marathon tenure of 22 years. A devotee of Swami Dayanand, he donated Rs. 30,000 to various institutions. Ch. Ganesh Dass Datt of Zafarwal, an Arya Samajist to the core, worked as Treasurer in the DAV College Managing Committee. He used to spend 3 hours daily there. Chaudhary Sahib founded two schools, one Arya Girls Wachhowali and the other, Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Qila Gujjar Singh in Lahore. He was Vice President and Trustee of the GMS, A part of his house was set aside as Guest House for Mohyal visitors. He was the right hand man of Mahatma Hans Raj. Ch. Ram Bhaj Datt was a barrister an educationist, a freedom fighter and an Arya Samajist, who was against untouchability He was also an author. He was Headmaster of Bharti School, Gurdaspur for some time. He played a pivotal role in framing the Constitution of the GMS and also worked as Editor Mohyal Mitter for many years. Mehta Lal Chand Mohan, an old guard of the GMS, had nursed the GMS. Like other colleagues, he was very much inspired by the lofty ideals of the Arya Samaj He was one of the pioneers amongst the Mohyals to venture into industrial field and among his enterprises were the Cotton Ginning Factory and an Oil Mill at Khanna (Punjab), which provided avenues of employment to many budding Mohyals. He was a liberal donor and used to assist many DAV institutions with generous and timely aid. He was a regular visitor to the schools in his jurisdiction, for onthe-spot financial help. Rzd. Maharaj Kishan Vaid of Lyallpur was one of the founding fathers of the GMS. The Arya Samaj remained his burning passion throughout his life. He established Arya Samaj temples at Hoti Mardan, Lyallpur and Patiala. He opened educational institutions under the banner of Arya Samaj, viz., the DAV School, Rawalpindi, Dhanpat School, Lyallpur, and Arya Putri Pathshala, Gurjranwala. He contributed to the cost of one room each in the DAV College, Lahore, and Mohyal Ashram, Lahore. A great visionary and a philanthropist, he lived and died for Mohyali Welfare. Ch. Hira Singh Datt was an Arya Samajist. He played a very crucial role in the establishment of the GMS; he was the backbone of the organization in collecting funds for it, so that the needy members of the community could prosper in every field of their choice. He was a good organizer, a community poet and an outspoken leader. He was a selfless leader, ready to perform any duty assigned to him. He served the GMS, with great zeal and vigour, as its Vice President and President, for many years. Bk. Jog Dhian Bali, Founder President of the GMS, was a great reformer and soul of the organization. With the prudent suggestions and discreet advice of his great associates and the band of visionary brothers, he crusaded in Mohyal society. An Arya Samajist, with passion for education, he purchased a plot of land at Lahore, for the Mohyal Students Hostel. He remained trustee throughout his entire life He paid Rs. 5,000/- for that plot of land for the Lahore Students Hostel, from his own pocket. lhjr ds ge xqyke gsa] lwjr gqbz rks D;kA lqj[kks lqsn fev~vh dh ewjr gqbz rks D;kAA Donate Generously towards Mohyal Ashram Mohyal Mitter / SEPTEMBER

24 HINDU RITUALS AND ROUTINES Why do we follow them? SERIES 7 Why do we fast? Most devout Indians fast regularly, or on special occasions, like festivals. On such days, they do not eat at all, eat once, or make do with fruits or a special diet of simple food. Fasting in Sanskrit is called Upavaasa, Upa means near + vaasa means to stay, Upavaasa, therefore, means staying near (the Lord), meaning the attainment of close mental proximity with the Lord. Then what has Upavaasa to do with food? A lot of our time and energy is spent in procuring food items, preparing, cooking, eating and digesting food. Certain food types make our mind dull and agitated. Hence, on certain days, man decides to save time and conserve his energy by eating either simple, light food, or totally abstaining from eating, so that his mind becomes alert and pure. The mind, otherwise pre-occupied by the thought of food, now entertains noble thoughts and stays with the Lord. Since it is a self-imposed form of discipline, it is usually adhered to with joy. Also, every system needs a break, and an overhaul, to work at its best. Rest and a change of diet during fasting are very good for the digestive system and the entire body. The more you indulge the senses, the more they make their demands. Fasting helps us to cultivate control over our senses, sublimates our desires and guides our minds to be poised and at peace. Fasting should not make us weak, irritable, or create an urge to indulge later. This happens, when there is no noble goal behind fasting. The Bhagavad-Gita urges us to eat appropriately neither too less nor too much Yuktaaahaara and to eat simple, pure and healthy food (a Saatvik diet), even when not fasting. Compiled by: Col. T.N. 25 HISTORY OF PANJA SAHIB In MM May 2013, Subhash Ratan Bhai Mangal Sain Chhibber ji had written an article on Katasraj Thirth. I felt very delighted reading it. In that, he had expressed his wish to know about the history of Panja Sahib. So, I am writing a brief article on Panja Sahib. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, along with Bhai Mardana Ji, reached Punjab, after traveling to Makkah & Bagdar. They reached a place called Hasan Abdal (now in Pak.). On a hill nearby, a local saint, named Hazrat Shah Wali Qandhari, lived. He was a famous saint, but in reality, he was a very proud and egoistic Muslim saint. He had feelings of hatred towards Hindus and wanted every Hindu to be converted into Muslims. Near his house, there was a well, from where people of Hasan Abdal used to take water for drinking purposes. Under a cool shady tree, Guru Nanak and Bhai Mardana started reciting Kirtan and their devotees gathered around. This annoyed Hazrat Shah Wali Qandhari, who used to meditate atop a nearby hill, but he was helpless. According to legend, Bhai Mardana was sent three times to Shah Wali Qandhari, by Guru Nanak, for fetching water to quench his thirst. Wali Qandhari refused his request and was rude to him. In spite of this, Mardana very politely stuck to his demand. The Wali ironically remarked: Why don t you ask your Master whom you serve? Mardana went back to the Guru in a miserable state and said Oh lord! I prefer death to thirst, but will not approach Wali, the egoist. The Guru replied Oh Bhai Mardana! Repeat the name of God, the Almighty; and drink the water to your heart s content. The Guru moved aside a big rock lying nearby; and a pure fountain of water sprang up and began to flow endlessly. Bhai Mardana quenched his thirst and felt grateful to the Guru. On the other hand, the fountain of Shah Wali Qandhari dried up. On witnessing this, the Wali, in his rage, threw a part of the hill towards the Guru from the top of the hill. The Guru stopped the hurled rock with his hand, leaving his hand print on the rock. Observing that miracle, Wali s pride & ego broke and he came down to meet Guru Nanak Ji. Now, he was a changed man, with a clear heart, all the negative feelings: anger, hatred, jealousy vanished, and all the positive feelings: love, benevolence, kindness, peace, mercy etc. took birth. He promised Guru Ji that he won t discriminate between Hindus & Muslims. Wali became the Guru s devotee. This holy and revered place was named Panja Sahib by Hari Singh Nalwa, the most famous General of the Kingdom of the Sikhs. He is credited with having built the first Gurudwara at this place. 27 ASPECTS OF AGING By: Prof. V.K. Datta With growing support of medical science, effective methods of treatment are leading to longevity; so the number of elderly persons in the society is increasing. But it is unpleasant for the elderly to live long and become a pain in the neck for the society and relatives. Years back, life was simpler and family traditions & social values counted for more. Those, who reached ripe ages, held a respectable place in the family & society and could relax and enjoy a delightful secure life, commanding the respect and attention, as head of the family. But with the decline of the joint family system, families becoming nuclear and children moving to greener pastures, the elderly persons are becoming lonely, insecure and disturbed. Loneliness and lack of objectivity result in unbalanced health and the intolerant attitude of the younger generation, combined with the ego of the elderly, is adding fuel to the fire. As a result, they are forced to stay away from their families, in Old Age Homes. In old age, the body starts degenerating; parts of the body, like teeth, start rejuvenating; muscles grow weaker and memories get shorter; making people more prone to diseases. There is no antidote to aging. The problems of health due to old age should be tackled from an early age, such as taking low calorie food, low fat milk, and doing regular exercises, performing regular work, keeping mental and emotional balance, and, above all, positive thinking. Disciplined life style and proper diet correct the imbalance, caused by indulgence. Graceful aging need four things, i.e., 1. Good health 2. Economic Security. 3. Good relations with family and society 4. Co-partnership with God. Positive attitude, good food habits, light exercise and walking help in maintaining good health. Worries & tensions are sources of bad health. As old age is the age of dependence, diseases are inevitable; so cultivate good relations with family & society. Economic security is important for happy & graceful aging. Senior citizens also need support of family & society. For solace and peace of mind, we need the blessings of Almighty to make ourselves fit to receive them, spend time to get near God, have co-partnership with Him, with regular prayers, helping a person fulfill his/her physical & emotional needs. Fulfilling the social, economic and spiritual needs of oneself and those of one s family supplement each other and create synergy in our life. Planning retirement, financial security, facing inactivity, boredom and loneliness, looking after one s health, submission to the Almighty for His blessings and grace are what the elderly want to do. On the other hand, the younger generation is busy adopting western culture forgetting traditional joint family system and respect for elders. Today husband and wife working want to live independent lives. Elderly persons want to put the clock back and compare the present with their own times, resulting in a conflict. Now is the time for them to give back to society and spread the message of Sewa, Samarpan, Sahyog, Sanskar and Sneh, by assisting the needy. They have to accept the changes and adopt the cultural changes. Hence the golden rule is to accept people as they are (instead of forcing a change) so as to have a happy adjustment and understanding with family and bring smiles on the face of individuals. This, in turn, will bring smiles in our lives. 159, Lajpat Nagar, Opp. Red Cross Bhawan, Jalandhar Sixteenth Anniversary of the Martyrdom (20 July 2013) of Lt. 28 ANTIM YATRA LIFE IS LIKE A RIVER Life is just like a river. W are moving without end; nothing stays! What remain with us are the memories of some special people who touched us as a wave. G.M.S expresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prays to God to grant eternal peace to the departed souls and strength to their families to bear with fortitude their irreparable loss. D.V. Mohan, Secy. General Maj. Gen. Sudhir Chander Dutta, VSM ( ) The light, that constantly illuminated and rekindled our lives, suddenly and unexpectedly went off, in the early hours of 11 th Aug It plunged every member of the family in the deepest shock, gloom, agony and total darkness. All this happened in a matter of mere three hours only, whilst we all stood totally helpless and hapless. My only son, Maj Gen (Retd) Sudhir Chander Dutta, VSM, suddenly left us. He was a very firm, decisive and determined person, by nature, very active, agile and mentally alert. He strived very hard throughout to maintain his health and overcome his spinal ailment. He had had a low grade viral fever for a couple of days and was getting treated. He, as usual, went to sleep at about 10 pm that night, but felt uncomfortable around am, when he was rushed to the hospital. He had a cardiac arrest and, despite all efforts, he could not be revived. This took away our PRECIOUS JEWEL. He was a pillar of strength for us, his ailing and aged parents, his wife Asha Dutta, two sons Sandeep Dutta & Ashish Dutta and their wives, Sumedha & Mansi Dutta. We all stand bereft of his love, affection, care, advice, guidance and support. Sudhir was commissioned into the Indian Army (Corps of E.M.E) in 1962 and, by virtue of his hard work, dedicated service and brilliant unblemished career, he rose to the level of Maj Gen. During service, he had availed of Study Leave and joined the IIT Delhi, where he acquired M.E in Industrial Engineering. After retirement from the Army, in the year 2000, he had a stint in the private sector. He was appointed C.E.O of multinational power companies in Odessa. He made his mark there also, whilst holding top executive appointments for almost a decade. He had to come back from there last year, on account of a slight set-back in his health. He had almost fully recovered and was gaining normal state of health; but was snatched away from us on that fateful night. It is impossible to fill the void and vacuum caused in our lives at this stage. The precious jewel has vanished and we are all left behind to suffer and shed tears for the rest of our lives. The vacuum shall never be filled despite all patience and forbearance on our part. To perpetuate his memory, I am donating Rs. 1,50,000/- as first instalment for a Deluxe Room in Mohyal Ashram, Vrindavan. The balance shall be remitted later. S.L. Bhagwanti (Datta) of Munde Mari, Chakwal (now in Pak.) and son-in-law of the late Shri Ishwardas & Snt. Mooladevi Mehta (Vaid) of Dalwal (now in Pak.), was observed on the 24 th July Exactly 50 years ago, on this very date, the God Almighty struck a severe blow on our family and the evil hands of death snatched away our revered father. God bestowed fortitude on our mother, the late Durgawati, who expired in Jan 2007, who absorbed the shock bravely and faced it upfront. Our mother lived more than half her life as a widow and she not only brought us up in an excellent manner, but also inculcated in us rich values, including performing of Havan each year, on this date, in memory of our late father. This year we commemorated his 50 th death anniversary and, upholding the high traditions set by our mother, performed Havan, attended by all my siblings & their children, residing in Delhi. However, we missed our sisters, Shashi Bahenji & Suman Rekha (the youngest of us all), as Bahenji, being in UK & Suman, being bed-ridden, could not attend. Nevertheless, we were fortunate that our Savitri Buaji (w/ o the late Maj. SN Bakshi), though not being too well, joined us on this solemn occasion. Buaji being the youngest & the only surviving sibling of our late father (they were 5 brothers - Nardev, Narinder, Navin, Prem & OP - & 2 sisters - Shanti w/o the late SR Bhai & Savitri -, our father being the eldest). Also present were many other dear & near. Savitri Buaji confessed that she considered herself to be fortunate to have been born in the Shastry Khandhan, to such a learned & pious father, a renowned Pracharak of Arya Samaj. She was proud of her eldest brother, as he was truly a blessed & a noble soul, today s Havan by his children bearing true testimony to this; for, it was only the blessed ones, who are dutifully remembered by their survivors for 50 long years, especially in today s world, where each one is to oneself & ever busy/preoccupied in daily routines. 30 Mohyal Mitter / SEPTEMBER 2013 Donate Rs.11,000 towards Langar Fund, Mohyal Ashram
