We in the Pacific Northwest treasure the few warm months of our summer and try to pack as many things as we can into them. Looking at our photos of these times envelops us in the warmth of the days and the love of family. The pictures here represent a 75 year span of time spent at the beach with family; the young lady on the right in the lower picture is the young-at-heart lady on the right in the top picture. Some of our family s happiest memories were made at the beach! And we have stacks of albums to prove it! Many families have an historian who faithfully snaps photos at every family event and promptly puts them in an album with names and dates for posterity. Some of us have a mixture of well labeled albums and photo boxes; and then there are those of us with the shoeboxes of our family photos that will take an archaeologist to catalog. Whatever your method it s important to keep a few old photos to pass along; be sure that, if you are the primary one who takes the pictures, to let someone take your picture from time to time, or do a selfie for posterity. If you are fortunate enough to be a part of activities at an Encore Community, the cell phone camera is ubiquitous, especially when you are trying to eat! We love having fun with you and want to share it! Look this way and smile! Peggy Reece Issue # 83

5 Capture the Moment corporate world is just as essential today in your living setting. Running a home efficiently can carry over into starting a book group or a singalong. And the best part of any day, a hug perhaps the best way to capture any moment is to greet others with a hug! At Clearbrook Inn we will make the most of every opportunity to capture the moments photographically and otherwise! Look forward to a contest involving photos of our residents seizing the day both now and from The newsletter is full of moments we the past. Did you climb a mountain? have captured to share, and we hope Fly a plane? Do you dance? Paint? to continue that with purpose in the Craft? Sing? We need the pic! Be September, when we observe National ready for some fun and frivolity with a Assisted Living Week September photo booth. Share your old photo albums Capture the Moment seeks to inspire with a neighbor. Capture those moments residents to seize the day and pursue better yet, cherish them, for they the dreams they have for this season are the stuff of which life is made. of their lives, while reflecting on the pivotal moments in their lives. Living life to its fullest at any age requires each of us to approach each day with purpose. Sometimes it helps to look back at the things we used to do to give us direction for tomorrow. While you won t be teaching a room full of third graders, there might be a third grader out there who could really use some help with reading. Your kind encouragement as a manager in the Life is made of moments, not things; choose to create and Page 5 collect the happy ones.

7 Resident of the month JOYCE WILSON What is your idea of perfect happiness? Being with Gordy and our family having fun times together. Lots of jokes and laughter. What is your most treasured possession? My wedding ring and memories If you could have dinner with anyone from the past or present, who would it be? Mark Twain, Tony Hillerman, J.A. Jance, favorite authors, along with my husband. What is your favorite journey? A cruise of the Baltic Sea with my husband. We enjoyed shore excursions in Copenhagen Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo, Tallinn and St. Petersburg. In your lifetime, what changes have come around that you like? Travel by air and under the seas. Supermarkets, elevators; more equality for women, advances in health care, innovative inventions. Joyce was born in Illinois. She and her brother grew up in McMinnville, Oregon where they worked in fields picking veggies and fruit every summer until high school graduation. Joyce graduated from Linfield College in In 1951, she met & married her wonderful Gordon. Together they raised three children, Karen, Kathi and Steve, while living in small towns from Oregon through New Mexico, California South Dakota and Idaho. Gordon built and managed saw mills and Joyce taught high school English. Later she earned her masters in counseling and worked in schools and mental health agencies. Joyce and Gordon had 66 happy, exciting years together while their family grew: four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Their daughter Kathi blazed the trail to Washington years ago and helped them find this retirement community. Kathi and Britt and their family helped them move and Joyce is eternally grateful. Joyce feels that Clearbrook is an outstanding community, a fine place to live, with good care, good food, good friends and activities. What is your most rewarding experience and what has made it so? Marrying Gordy was the best decision I ever made. He was my best and truest friend. We were a great team for 66 years. What might someone be surprised to know about you? I hitch-hiked 633 miles the summer I worked at Canyon Lodge in Yellowstone Park (1950). Summer afternoon summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language. ~Henry James Page 7
8 HERE S TO YOUR HEALTH! Beat Peggy the Reece Heat So try these stress and heat beaters: Journal-the ritual of putting pen to paper transfers the mental energy out of your mind so you can let it go Special moments we don t want to miss them because of the stress and fast pace of daily living. We live in an age when we can just about have it all but maybe we don t really need all if it keeps us too busy to enjoy life s little moments. It takes time to intentionally reduce stress, but we really can beat the heat of too fast a pace with a few simple steps. And when the heat of life s pressures are reduced, it actually makes it easier for our bodies to beat the heat of the summer weather. It s a win-win kind of thing! Get moving-exercise releases pent up energy that keeps us tense Practice mindful meditation-being mindful improves wellbeing by reducing worry & encouraging better sleep Sleep! being sleep deprived is really stressful; a good night s rest makes everything better. Be sure to have down time before bed-a good book, a bath, no tv; make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary, dark, quiet and cool; try lavender aromatherapy to relax. Sweet dreams make for sweet days. And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair. ~Kahlil Gibran Schold Place NW Silverdale, WA
