At this time of year as the sky begins to darken and the temperature begins to drop, we take great comfort in gathering as a community to celebrate the Festival of Lights and the accompanying warmth that the spirit of those lights provides. I hope you will join us for a wonderful and joyous Chanukah celebration on the 1 st night of Chanukah, Friday, December 11 th. The It has been a long time since I have written about the business of the Board of Trustees, but our November meeting was last night and I am still thinking about it. I like to keep the meeting to one hour, but this one ran over by a bit, as there were quite a few items on the agenda. We had a 1 st quarter budget review. While it is not surprising that Annual Giving (dues) is down, it is wonderful to see that the staff continues to find ways to cut expenses in light of a drop in income. It is interesting to note that December is our biggest month for dues. We can tell a lot about how we will do based on the December Annual Giving line in the budget. That means that the 2 nd quarter review, which will happen in January, will be especially important. Ann Gilbert, the chairman of our Social Action Committee, made a presentation of the proposed Social Action Allocations. I am proud of the way the committee handled allocations this year. A special Allocations Sub-committee was in charge of contacting the agencies and getting the information we need to 2 A Message from Rabbi Schiftan... An Extraordinary Chanukah Celebration members of our Junior Choir, led by the inspiring Dennis Scott, will lead us in the medley of Chanukah songs. The Cantors musical ensemble will lift spirits throughout the liturgy and together we will light the Chanukah candles. MOST IMPORTANTLY, as Chanukah is the Hebrew term for dedication or rededication we will take this opportunity to rededicate our Holocaust Torah Scroll, given to The Temple by The Loewenstein Family on that first night of Chanukah as well. The Sacred Work of the Board of Trustees by Patty Marks make an informed decision about whether or not to fund the agency, and, if so, by how much. It should be no surprise that the need in the community for monies for non-profit agencies continues to grow. We should all feel proud that Temple supports the good work of so many worthwhile agencies. The money for these allocations comes from the Kuhn and Buchman Social Action Funds, as well as from the Memorial Tablet Fund. Approval of allocations will take place at the December meeting of the Board of Trustees, with the distribution of Allocation checks taking place at the Social Action Shabbat on January 15 th. A highlight of the November meeting was the approval by the Board of a three-year extension of the contract of Rabbi Shana Mackler. It is hard to believe that this past July marked the 5 th anniversary of Rabbi Mackler joining our Senior Staff, becoming a valued member of our clergy team and our Temple family! Rabbi Mackler has shared her life with us, and we continue to be enriched by all that she offers! It is worth noting that Rabbi Mackler continues to make Temple history in her tenure here. She The Scroll will be placed in a new beautifully assembled museum case to be placed, in turn, for regular viewing in our Pre-function area. The display case is a gift from the Confirmation classes of 2009 & 2010. Members of both Confirmation classes, along with members of The Loewenstein Family, have been invited and encouraged to attend that evening. Services begin at 5:45 p.m. and are followed by a dinner in our Social hall. Once again, please join us for an historic night for our congregation. was the first female rabbi of the congregation to be married here at Temple. She will now, with this new contract, become the longest serving Associate Rabbi that Temple has ever had. It speaks volumes about her character, integrity, and value to not only the Senior Rabbi and lay leadership, but to the membership as well. I am so proud to have been the one to sign this contract! There is one final piece of Board business about which I would like to comment. The Temple Arts Festival chairmen are hard at work getting prepared for the April 10-11 th event. It promises to be better than ever! I reminded the Board that TAF IS Temple s major fundraiser. I think that sometimes, in thinking about it, we forget that. So, as I told the Board, even if you cannot buy a certificate or are not in the market for a piece of art or jewelry, you can still be supportive of our MAJOR fundraiser. Any amount that one can give is appreciated. I have challenged the Board to 100% financial participation. And I believe that we will get that! The work of the synagogue is sacred. And it is a privilege and an honor to serve.

The Temple s Holocaust Torah By: Betty Lee Rosen, Beautification Chair ~ Cover Photo by: Steve Shapiro Torah scrolls were part of a huge collection of Jewish ceremonial objects that Nazi Germany confiscated and desecrated during the time of the Holocaust. Some of these precious items of Judaica were rescued from Eastern Europe and have since made their way into Jewish congregations around the world. Due to the generosity of the Loewenstein family, The Temple has had a Holocaust Torah in its collection since l980. The Loewenstein Family gave the Torah in memory of Julius and Henry Loewenstein. Our Torah was written in Germany in the middle of the 19th Century and the handwriting is the typical style of a German scribe. The parchment is very light as compared to the size of the Torah, making it unique to Germany. The calligraphy in this Torah is distinct using a special tradition of writing, which utilizes both large and small letters. The calligraphy is also marked by its use of twisted letters; that is, fanciful script in a tradition that has since stopped. No one knows for sure why this specific style of calligraphy has ceased, but many suppose that once those scribes and communities perished, so too did their style and flare. It is apparent from the black markings found around the top and bottom of the scroll, that this Torah was rescued from a fire during the time of the Holocaust. The Confirmation classes of 2009 and 2010 wanted their class gift used to create a display for our Torah. The Holocaust Torah display will be dedicated on Friday, December 11. 2009 at 5:45 pm, during our Hanukkah worship services. We hope you will join us for this special dedication. Attention Seniors!!! The Social Action Committee is sponsoring a Medicare Prescription Plan Review at The Temple Sunday, December 6 th at 10:00 a.m. & Saturday, December 12 th at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Bob Neaderthal will review the medications you take & help select the plan best suited for your needs. Bring your prescriptions...you will be seen on a first come first served basis. The review will take approximately 10 minutes. Medicare Part D is now in its 4th year, and the confusion and complexity has not subsided. For example: In the first year there were 41 plans available from which to choose, now there are over 65 plans 1. Each plan differs in its monthly premium, deductible, copayment, drug brands included and excluded. 3. What you may not realize is that plans change their policies from one year to the next, and what was the best plan for you last year may be the most costly one this year. Some plans that did not have a do-nut hole last year have implemented one this year. 2. The dreaded do-nut hole, when patients must pay 100% of drug costs, continues to baffle people and increase out-of-pocket costs. 4. On top of all those changes, your doctor may have made a change in your medicines during the past year. The new drug may not be on the formulary of the old company, causing you to pay more for that drug. You may change plans between November 15 th and December 31 st each year with a simple phone call. After that date you are stuck for a whole year. So how can anyone determine which of the 65 plans is the best plan for you? There is a way by using the Medicare Drug Analysis provided on the Medicare web site. Last year the Temple provided an easy way to do this Drug Analysis, and many congregants took the opportunity to pick the best plan for them. More than half resulted in the advice to change to better plans for the coming year. Many who did not do the Analysis or remained in their old plan made a costly decision. Find out if the plan you are now in is still the best plan for you. 5

R E L I G I O U S S C H O O L 1, 2 & 3 4 th graders learn about creating traditions by hearing about Gail Jacobs becoming Bat Mitzvah, participating in a Mock Jewish Wedding and talking with Michael Weinberger about his Confirmation. Rabbi Michael Klein-Katz spoke with our 9 th and 10 th grade families about Israel and its importance in our lives. Year of Heroes Brings Special Guests by Lynda Gutcheon Our Confirmation students went to work at the Family Affairs Ministries building needed shelves and sorting clothes. Bob Miller and Louis Lefkowitz talked with our 9 th graders about their Free Clinic in East Nashville. Their heroic acts help hundreds in Nashville. Rabbi Saul Strosberg shared his thoughts about Orthodox Judaism and how it compared to Reform Judaism with our 5 th graders. 8
