He was sitting in front of a fire, talking with his rebbe, and the fire was just about to go out. There are only scattered embers in the fireplace. The rebbe took his poker and stoked the embers into a heap. There is a burst of flame and new warmth from the fire. Rabbi Mackler Do you see what happened when I gathered the embers close together? The rabbi asked. The fire came back to life. When the coals are separated from each other, there is little heat. But when they are close, they get warmth from each other and the fire is renewed. It s the same with our people. When we are alone, our spirit is in danger of dying out, but when we huddle together, we get warmth and comfort from one another and our hope is renewed. Shabbat, our weekly holiday, is all about welcoming. We welcome the proverbial Sabbath Bride with the singing of Lecha Dodi, we welcome the restful pause in our week to refresh and rejuvenate for the week ahead, and we welcome the idea of a time when all will be Shabbat. But, the truth is, our obligation is to welcome each other as well. In our daily prayer service, we learn that there are certain obligations whose worth is immeasurable, and among them is the mitzvah of hachnasat orchim the welcoming of guests. This mitzvah is so great, that in the Talmud, the rabbis go so far as to say the welcoming of guests takes precedence over the beit midrash -- the house of study...and one even says, that hachnasat orchim -- the welcoming of guests takes precedence over welcoming the divine presence -- the Shechinah (Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat 127a). At Temple, we have done an incredible job welcoming guests and newcomers. Every person who comes reflects that they were greeted with kindness and a friendly welcome. We can be very proud of all of our intentional work to create a wonderfully welcoming community. And there is always more we can do, as we strive to deepen those relationships. One way we can all engage in this mitzvah is to reach out to people and invite them to join us for services, or for Shabbat dinner in our homes. For all of us, the week is long, our lives busy, and our desire for the weekends may sometimes be just to go home to our families and enjoy relaxing in their company above all else. Perhaps we are shy or nervous to go to another s home, or to have others at our table. It is easy to understand all the reasons we could give to not engage in the mitzvah of welcoming others. But the most important reason to perform this mitzvah is the joy that hosts and guests feel as that fire of community burns brighter when we are together. Over the summer, too, we will have learning Shabbat services on Saturday mornings. We will spend some time with sections of prayers, with new and familiar melodies. We invite all who would like to learn a bit more about Jewish liturgy join us on these Shabbat mornings. We welcome all our young adults and young couples to join us for our Next Dor Patio Progressive Dinner, Saturday, July 12 th meeting at Temple at 6pm. That night, we will have a chance to welcome Rabbi Michael Shulman, our new Director of Education and Next Generation Programs. It is a great way for young adults and young couples to meet each other, and to reconnect with friends over the summer. And finally, our Temple hosts a Taste of Judaism over the summer in a three-part series taught by Rabbi Rami Shapiro. This summer, classes will be Wednesdays, July 9, 16, and 23 at 7pm. We welcome the entire community, members and not, Jewish and not, to learn (or re-learn) more about Judaism, its teachings and values. Welcoming one another and forging meaningful relationships is at the heart of what we do as a people and as a Temple. Thank you for what you do to help to create our warm and welcoming community. page 2 ~ July ~ August

3 Get on Board Chills ran down my spine when I opened up an late last summer and realized that Rabbi Schiftan wanted to meet with me after the High Holidays. Although the rather innocuous purpose of the Rabbi s was to schedule some two months in advance a meeting to discuss my ideas and plans for my first year as Temple president (barring any opposition to my election to serve in that capacity some eight months later), my chills were caused by a triggered memory from some fifty years ago In fact, Rabbi Schiftan s reminded me of the several occasions during my pre-teen years in which as I proceeded Ralph Levy through the required receiving line after I attended mandatory post-religious school Sabbath morning services, Rabbi Falk asked me to meet with him in his study. In each of those dreaded meetings, the routine was the same. He would encourage me to behave during future Saturday morning services and he directed me to let my parents know of our little visit. I promised Rabbi Falk I would behave in the future. When I jumped into my mother s car after each of these visits ended, I would always say fine in response to her inevitable inquiry about how Religious School was that morning. After dealing with the eerie sense of déjà vu triggered by Rabbi Schiftan s , the reality hit home. I would likely become Temple president in less than a year and, as a result, I really did have to think about what I wanted to accomplish during at least the first year of my two year term. As I put my thoughts to paper (via Microsoft Word ) in preparation for the meeting with Rabbi Schiftan in his office, I chuckled (to myself) yet again. Not only has the dreaded Rabbi s study now become the Rabbi s office, but I now understand that a Temple Rabbi can have hair and that each male Temple Rabbi who I knew in my formative years chose not to wear a yarmulke out of choice and not for lack of an adhesive surface other than his scalp. When I finally met with Rabbi Schiftan this past October, I prefaced my by then well-developed thoughts by noting that in order to determine my objectives, I must identify my constituents as president in other words, who does The Temple (and thus its president) serve? The Temple and its president have obligations to each constituency group and each group answers the question why are we here? differently since each has different needs and reasons for participation in Temple activities. Rabbi Schiftan listened patiently as I indicated that The Temple (and thus its president) serves four different constituency groups (1) the members of the Congregation, both individually and as a whole; (2) the members of the professional staff of The Temple (its clergy and others); (3) the members of the Board of Trustees; and (4) the other officers of the Congregation (now two persons other than the president, but historically three other officers). In developing objectives for his or her term, the incoming president must identify initiatives that address the needs of each of these four constituency groups. After a pause, Rabbi Schiftan urged me to go on quite a different directive than that of go home and tell your parents given to me by Rabbi Falk from almost precisely the same location some fifty years earlier. I then outlined for Rabbi Schiftan my three objectives for 2014/2015: Objective No. 1: Education It is critical that The Temple president help educate each constituency group. I indicated I was going to beef up the content of each meeting of the Board of Trustees by inviting a former Temple president to speak on topics such as what happened during his or her watch and what words of advice and/or warning the former president could offer to the current Board members. In order to increase the knowledge of the Board on The Temple s financial matters, at each meeting, Lisa Crockett, The Temple s Director of Finance and Operations, will present in more detail than normally addressed one aspect of the financial activities of The Temple. For each Board meeting, one committee will present to the Board the objectives and activities of that specific committee. Finally, one aspect of The Temple or its history will be pointed out to The Temple Board members at each meeting. Through this enhanced content at each Board meeting, which was kicked off at the May Temple Board meeting, the Board members, officers, Rabbis, Cantor and other professional staff can all become better educated as to both the history and ongoing operations of The Temple. To further educate the members of the Congregation, I have recommended that The Temple View be expanded to add in each issue a Fun Fact about The Temple and its history (did you know that....? and (starting after this year s High Holy Days), a lesson of the month one that can rotate among each of the Rabbis and Cantor. Watch for these changes in this and future issues of The View. In addition, I will encourage Loren Elliot and Freya Sachs as chairs of the Adult Education Committee to work with the Rabbis and Cantor to develop additional adult education classes such as Taste of Judaism classes to provide congregants with Judaism-related information that either was never learned during their formative years or has long been forgotten. Objective No. 2: Integration With the beginning of its 2014/2015 fiscal year, all members of The Temple s reconstituted clergy and professional staff will be in place. Just as with a sports team, the newly added Temple Team members will need to work closely together with those already in place in advancement of The Temple s objectives. This year should be viewed both as the final transition year for The Temple s player personnel and also as the first year with new players added to the team. To promote integration of The Temple s clergy and professional staff, I will encourage teamwork and collaboration among the team members and communication and teamwork by and among The Temple s lay leadership (its officers and Board members) to and with the members of The Temple congregation....continued on page 11 July ~ August ~ page 3

5 Fun Facts New Members... In the beginning... Question: Did you know that The Temple Congregation Ohabai Sholom uses as its own beginning date the year in which a three-acre lot that is part of the current cemetery was purchased for this purpose? Fact: In 1851, three early Jewish settlers formed the Hebrew Benevolent Burial Society that purchased, for $377.00, three acres of property that is part of the current Temple Cemetery. This was the first recorded organized Jewish act in Nashville. Although in 1848 a small group of Jews began praying in the home of one of the three early settlers, not until 1853 did they hire a Rabbi, who was paid $ a year. In 1854, they officially incorporated as Kahl Kodesh Mogen David (Holy Community of the Shield of David) in honor of Davidson County. Although it is unclear when the fledging congregation held its first annual meeting after formation of the new corporation, The Temple has for some years sequentially numbered each of its annual meetings as if its first annual meeting were held in 1851, the year in which the three acre plot was purchased. For example, in May, 2014, the 163 rd Annual Meeting of The Temple took place. Question: Did you know that as part of the design of the Three Prophets sculpture on the outside of The Temple s Harding Road building, its then Rabbi, William Silverman, was concerned that the three figures [in the concept design of the sculpture] might suggest the hooded figures of the Ku Klux Klan? Fact: In August, 1954, Rabbi Silverman sent a letter to A. Raymond Kaz, who had submitted several two-dimensional concept designs of the sculpture for review by Temple members and local consultants. In the letter, he expressed his concern over one of the designs for the sculpture and complained that the design seemed ominous and foreboding. In fact, the inspiration for the sculpture was probably from a saying found in Pirke Avot: On three things the world was founded, on Truth, Justice, and Peace. Thus, the right prophet (or rabbi) holds a set of scales, the center prophet the Tablets of the Law, and the left prophet holds an olive branch. Today: Many congregants are not aware of the ten-foot high limestone sculpture on the façade of the exterior wall of the Temple building that faces Harding Road. With the renovation of The Temple building, the circular driveway around The Temple building was eliminated in part to enable its preschool to have an expanded playground. As a result, the sculpture is much less visible to those who use the main entrance driveway and is thus significantly less ominous and foreboding. 10 Preschool by Jan Huettner This past semester I was given the opportunity to expand the Judaic enrichment part of the preschool curriculum. By exploring Jewish holidays, Shabbat, mitzvot, and teaching Jewish values, our hope was that this experience would deepen an interest in Jewish learning and stimulate the children to want to learn more. What I discovered, personally, was the chance to enter the classrooms for brief, golden moments of time and capture unique, wonderful bonding experiences of common collaboration with our young students. These opportunities became a great time to share conversations, questions, and books. It gave us a chance to learn through our hands, our smells, and our taste buds. We cooked, we cleaned, and we welcomed together the magic of the Jewish holidays. When Purim was on the horizon, it was exciting to talk about the qualities of all of the characters in the megillah from the royals-- Queen Esther, Cousin Mordechai, and Vashti to the evil prime-minister, Haman. The younger children loved making their own Haman hats from newspapers and reading books about how to celebrate this dress-up holiday from many of our PJ library books that were sent on a monthly basis to all of our classrooms. We sang Purim songs and made our own hamantashen in several of our older classes. Our accomplished chefs pinched the dough together on three sides creating a triangle and filled the middle with preserves. There is no substitute for real home-made cookies. The younger classes made hamantashen by shaping playdough into triangles. Passover activities were amazing! The children were able to sample different foods that are typically served during this special week, including matzah ball soup. We made matzah pizza, smelled the horseradish sauce, and we even made homemade macaroons. We talked about the plagues in our oldest Pre-K classroom and read some wonderful stories about Passover. Each classroom made a creative centerpiece for our model seder and All Things Judaic Rabbi Mackler and Cantor Fishbein joined us to lead the preschool seder on April 11 th. The Temple used these unique centerpieces to accent their own seder for the second night of Passover. Yom Ha Atzmaut and Shavuot were wonderful holidays. We learned that the bodies of water that surround Israel all rhyme: the Med (Mediterranean) Sea, the Dead Sea, and the Red Sea. We made Jewish flags to wave in honor of this Day of Independence and we made falafel. We reconstructed the Chagall windows at the Hadassah Hospital by using different textures of tissue paper and we sang and marched to Israeli music. For Shavuot, we learned that there should be rules to follow in order to establish a sense of order and moral ethics in what we do and how we act. The children have been enthusiastic, bright and very attentive. It is a pure joy to work with them. Building a Garden The Sholom Preschool class presented their idea of a garden to The Temple Beautification Committee. What a great opportunity for our Preschool and Temple leadership to work together on a project!!! Page 10 ~ July ~ August

11 Recognize Anyone??? The women below were all active members of The Temple. Many of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren still belong and work diligently in many different aspects of Temple life. Can you guess who they are? We will list their names in the next View. Continued from page 3... A very recent example of a collaborative initiative of this type can be found in the success of this year s Temple to Table fundraiser, a new Temple event. Without close cooperation of The Temple clergy and professional staff (particularly Erin Zagnoev) and the fundraiser s steering committee (chaired by Chris McPherson), this event would not have achieved and even exceeded its financial and other objectives given its inception and implementation within a severely constrained timetable. This integration will necessarily include improved communication to and among The Temple s clergy and professional staff, its lay leadership and Temple members. Objective No. 3: Accountability Even though three of the four constituency groups of The Temple are not compensated for services to The Temple, each of the four groups must do its job and must assume that the other groups will also do theirs in a punctual and professional manner. As President, I will hold the other two officers accountable for the timely performance of their functions. With a reduction in the number of Temple officers from four to three, the bandwidth of each officer has necessarily increased. As a result, communications among the officers and by the officers with the committee chairs of their assigned liaison committees has become more important. It will be incumbent on the officers to keep the Board apprised of Temple activities even if those activities do not require formal Board approval. The end result of increased communication of this type should be increased transparency and a proactive and well informed Board of Trustees. The final aspect of accountability is the responsibility of The Temple Board members and others who chair special or ad hoc committees (keep in mind that The Temple is a Jewish organization and thus loves committees) to keep the Board and officers apprised of the activities and objectives of each special committee. I will encourage special or ad hoc committee chairs to report to the Board and the Temple officers on activities of their committees regularly and to complete in a timely manner the tasks for which those committees were established. As I walked into the house after my October meeting in Rabbi Schiftan s office, my wife Randi asked me how my meeting went that afternoon and I responded, fine as I chuckled to myself and washed up for dinner.
