So...why was this Valentine s Day night different than all other Rabbi Schiftan Valentine s Day nights? The answer, for us: For the first time in twenty-three years, my wife and I had the evening all to ourselves. No homework to monitor; no after-school errands to run; no Hebrew School drop-offs or pick-ups; no sport practices nor games to attend; no teenage drama to negotiate...or to endure. We have always attempted to value every chapter of our lives...to savor each stage and passage... and to try not to wish a single day away. But now, a new and very different chapter looms before us: For the first time in more than two decades, Valentine s Day (or at least Valentine s night) belonged to just the two of us...and that is no small thing. We are now empty nesters. In the rear-view mirror, it seems to have gone by in the blink of an eye. But as any parent will tell you, parenting is a day-by-day mix of wonder and delight, combined with an ample dose of exhaustion, and alongside the endless requirements of endurance, patience and self-sacrifice. And that doesn t even come close to describing or including those special teenage years... those years when everything can turn on a dime...and every emotion can turn even more quickly than that...and turn, in turn, upon us: Driver s licenses and dating, curfews and college applications. As the Yiddish saying goes: Little children, little headaches; bigger children, bigger headaches. Suffice it to say that, at one stretch of time, we had three teenage children living under our roof... bless their hearts. And yet...we both feel incredibly blessed...and incredibly lucky. We reflect on so many moments of great joy...simple pleasures of every chapter of those years with our children, every day ending with them safely tucked in their beds each night. To raise a child -- in safety, and in love -- towards adulthood...well, that is no small thing, either. To have the privilege of sharing these wonderful young souls with the world...well, what greater blessing can there be in life? We now know that our work is also not fully done, either: There are still university tuition bills to manage, and the continuous stream of college calls for assistance and advice, often at all hours of the day, and night, which still require a patient, loving and sensitive ear. But this much, already, is wonderfully different for us: For the first time in many years, even decades, the house is serene and quiet, clear and clean of piles of preschool, adolescent or teenage stuff that normally accrue as each academic year goes on. For the first time in years, we have the chance to finish our conversations, uninterrupted by other claims on our attention or focus. We can sleep soundly, again, at night, no longer waiting for our children to make it safely home; and, in fact, most nights, are ours, once again, as well. And, we are able to be more spontaneous in our plans, whether for the evening, or for travel, once again. So how was this Valentine s Day evening different than all other nights? It really wasn t. Now, every night, once again, belongs just to the two of us. Every night, can be Valentine s Day Night for us. Every chapter of life, and of our lives, brings its own blessings: This chapter, the blessing is time...once again... just for the two of us. Rabbi Schiftan s Sabbatical Update: At long last, Rabbi Schiftan will be taking the first part of a delayed three-part sabbatical, approved by the Board of Trustees several years ago. He will include this initial phase alongside his summer vacation plans for this year. Rabbi Schiftan will be gone from mid-june until early August, with the final dates to be determined in the very near future. Please note that during his absence, Rabbi Mackler and Cantor Gutcheon will be available for any pastoral and life cycle needs of the congregation. Get on Board As I thought about how to start my article this month I decided that it would be a good time to once again talk about some of our Temple s s. I do this mainly because as I approach the end of my time as your President it gives me another opportunity to recognize all the good things our committees do and to thank the many volunteers that dedicate their time and energy in defining your Temple. All of your Board of Trustees either chair or sit on one of our many committees. During my time as an officer I have had a chance to participate with all of our s and watch the wonderful work they accomplish. Throughout the course of a year all committees present reports to the Board at our monthly meetings. Randy Goldstein During the February Board Meeting we had an opportunity to hear from Diane Kuhn, Michael Cooper and Jill Eisenstein, Chairs of the Boulevard Bolt as they presented the successes of the 2011 Bolt. Loren Elliot, one of our Caring Connection Co-Chairs talked about their work connecting with our congregation. The Caring Connection offers a wide range of support for our Temple family. They coordinate the delivery of meals and gifts, send notes, provide transportation assistance, and make hospital and home visits. Last month I also had an opportunity to attend a few of the committee meetings. The Building & House is Co-chaired by Steve Shapiro and Alan Cooper and meets monthly. Their responsibilities include keeping The Temple facilities and equipment in good working condition and are in charge of all maintenance and repairs of Temple facilities subject to Board approval. When you walk through the doors of The Temple take a moment to look around at all our exquisite art. The Beautification, under the guidance of Betty Lee Rosen meets monthly. The primary duty of this committee is to maintain the general enhancement of the beauty of both the interior and exterior of The Temple. I was also able to attend the Investment Meeting. Chaired by Mindy Hirt, they meet quarterly and provide a written report annually to the Board. They have the responsibility of overseeing the portfolio management and investments of all funds in our endowment. I hope you take advantage and join one of the many committees The Temple has to offer. Please call Nancy Richardson, any of our committee chairs, or me if you wish to volunteer for any of our committees. April 21 st and 22 nd is our Temple Arts Festival. This is our Annual Fund Raiser and we need your support. Over 100 volunteers support TAF and it gives you an opportunity to work alongside other Temple members. Whether purchasing a piece of art or jewelry you have an opportunity to support your Temple and take something home when you leave. Last, you still have a chance to increase your Annual Gift for this years campaign. As we move into March we begin our budget process for We make every effort to control costs, but need your financial support to enable us to continue to provide the programs and services for our Temple family. Spring is definitely in the air, and the preschool is ready! When March rolls around, and the sights and sounds of warmer weather arrive, we look forward to several Spring time events and holiday gatherings at The Temple Preschool. The Temple Preschool Purim Carnival is scheduled for Monday, March 12 th. However, this year we look forward to celebrating with our older religious school students on Sunday, March 11 th. There will be pony rides, large inflatables, a magic show, and food vendors in The Temple s parking lot. The Temple s religious school graciously invited the preschool to participate in this exciting and fun-filled morning. This will be a wonderful family event, and we hope that our youngest children will enjoy the thrilling new carnival atmosphere. The next day we will be tying up the weekend with a Monday Sammy the Spider Day Special Event. If you are not familiar with the lovable, yet mischievous, character from many children s books, Sylvia A. Rouss, the author, and Katherine Janus Kahn, the illustrator, have written a whole series of books centered around a little spider named Sammy who always needs to be rescued or taught by his mother that only the Shapiros (the family that Sammy and his mom reside with) can celebrate the Jewish holidays, not spiders. There is one line, central to all of their stories that all the children wait for: Silly little Sammy, said Spring Forward page 11 ~ March Preschool by Corye Nelson & Jan Huettner his mother. Spiders don t celebrate Passover (or Purim, or whatever the holiday is). Spiders spin webs. This line is uttered with gusto by every child that listens to the Sammy the Spider series of books. During the afternoon, in honor of our hero, we will read the book, Sammy the Spider s First Purim. We will have a costume parade, make groggers and crowns from the art activity table, make our own hamantashen, and climb through an obstacle course. It sounds like a very eventful afternoon. Later, in the month of March we will once again celebrate the preschool s biggest fund raiser of the year. It is the annual Spaghetti Dinner and Auction that will take place on Sunday evening, March 25 th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Our Parent works extremely hard every year to provide an amazing Italian feast, catered this year by our own fabulous Goldie Shepard, entertaining music, brought back once again by popular demand, the multitalented Dennis Scott, and once in a lifetime deals to our Temple Preschool families and friends. We cordially invite all of you to come and enjoy this fabulous night. You may purchase tickets at the door and don t forget to bring your credit card/check book. All funds raised from this event will go towards enrichment for our children and capital improvements for the program. So, Spring forward and enjoy. Confirmation Class This year s Confirmation Class has requested that, in lieu of individual gifts, donations can be made to the Confirmation Fund. This fund s proceeds are applied to the class trip to New York, in order that the cost be defrayed for everyone. 7 Cantorial Search by Patty Marks The search for the new cantor continues. To date, we have received 14 applications. After reviewing the candidates resumes and personal statements and listening to their music, the committee decided to conduct telephone interviews with five candidates. Of those 5 we have brought one candidate to town and are in the process of bringing a 2 nd candidate in to meet the committee. The visit by Candidate #1 provided a template for each subsequent visit. Based on that, a candidate s visit includes an audition for the Search and Executive, followed by Shabbat services led by the candidate, Rabbi Schiftan and Rabbi Mackler. After that, the group has dinner together, followed by an interview with the candidate. This allows the committee to get to interact with the candidate and the candidate to get to know committee members. Candidate #1, who was here in late January, also had the opportunity to have meals with committee members, as well as with the officers and rabbis. Much of what is planned is subject to the availability of the candidate and the time involved in traveling to and from Nashville. We are planning to send a delegation from the Search to see Candidate #1 in her home congregation during an upcoming Shabbat. We look forward to reporting on our trip. As I mentioned above, we are in the process of finalizing details for a visit by Candidate #2, who is a Student Cantor, graduating this May from Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music. Our hope is to have her visit Nashville no later that early March. The committee is looking forward to bringing her to Nashville to show her why we love this congregation and the community of which we are a part. Finally, we are in the process of assessing our two most recent candidates. We are confident that we will be conducting a phone interview with one, if not both. Thus, the process continues...i will keep you posted! The Temple gratefully acknowledges your generosity. With your financial support, we are able to meet our programmatic, educational and spiritual goals. This year, as we continue to celebrate our Temple accomplishments, we highlight a few new successes: *Our annual Chanukah service & dinner was a golden success with 250 members in attendance. The night was filled with music, art projects for the kids, and delicious latkes. What a special way to celebrate the festival of lights as one bright and shining community. * With the support of 317 Temple families, our High Holyday Memorial Book raised more than $31,000 to help secure the continuing success of The Temple. * In January, 36 women attended our Sixth Biennial Women's Retreat led by Rabbi Shana Mackler. The weekend was filled with learning, laughter, and creative programming. It was an opportunity to connect with other congregants in a truly meaningful way. * We continue to engage and retain members in our Young Adult & Young Couples community through special programming. In November, we filled the Whole Foods cooking class to capacity. In December, more than 40 celebrated Chanukah in East Nashville, and in January, 30 members participated in our Annual Progressive Dinner. Our Temple s accomplishments are because of you and your generosity! Thank you! " Rabbi Falk's 90 th Birthday to be Honored at March 2012 CCAR Convention". We are delighted to share the news that several of Rabbi Falk's former rabbinic proteges and colleagues have made a significant, collective contribution to the Central Conference of American Rabbis, in honor of Rabbi Falk's 90 th birthday. An entire series of Torah study and enrichment programs at the upcoming CCAR convention in Boston will be dedicated to honor Rabbi Falk's contributions to the Reform Rabbinate, and to the Reform movement as a whole. The program will include a tribute to Rabbi Falk. His daughter Heidi (who resides in Boston) will be invited to attend the CCAR Convention to represent the Falk Family. As of today, the contributors to this honor include Rabbis Fred Guttman, Ken Kanter, Bill Kuhn, Bruce Lustig, Shana Mackler, and Mark Schiftan. Additional names may continue to be added after our publication deadline. Our Temple Accomplishments This year with your donor tax receipt, which you received in January for your charitable giving in 2011, we hope you enjoyed the opportunity to continue to learn more about our Temple successes. Your Annual Gift makes all of our accomplishments possible. We have so much to be proud of: Chavurah: derived from the Hebrew root that means friend or friendship P creating great memories P building friendships P having good times Thanks to all of you who have participated in making The Temple s Chavurah program successful!
