TIMELY TIDINGS Knights of Columbus Council 1634 Hillsboro, Oregon Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism Volume 19, Issue 11 November 2018 Grand Knight-Michael Pranger (503) 522-9522 ~ Financial Secretary-Mike Wanner (503) 693-7507 Grand Knight Report Brothers, as we leave summer behind with the World Series finishing, football at mid-season and the NBA starting their regular games, we too are hitting our stride within the Council. We just finished helping with two dozen members supporting the St Matthew Fall Festival. We conducted a very successful District Soccer Competition, with 46 students kicking their way through the afternoons, sending eleven to the State Competition next month. We have committed to support Supreme with providing three boxes of Coats for Kids to keep the needy children of our local communities warm as temperatures begin to drop with the onset of the cold, wet weather of winter gripping us. We will be honoring our deceased members that we lost during the past twelve months during our Memorial Mass at 7:00 PM on Friday, November 9 th, this year at Visitation Parish. Unfortunately, between Hillsboro council and our brothers from Scappoose Council, we will be memorializing thirteen members, so please plan to attend that evening to show our support for the families of our good friends and brothers gone to their eternal reward. Our Chaplain, Fr Rito Guzman will be presiding. Two days later, we will be conducting a Pancake Breakfast at St Francis Parish in Roy on www.hillsborokofc1634.org Sunday, November 11 th, so make plans to help serve the breakfast while bringing family and friends to enjoy the meal. With all the activities we support, we could be doing so much more, but we are stymied by one critical factor that is vital to our continued success as a council - members becoming current with their dues. As we enter the month of November, we have thirty members that still owe past dues. One third owe for the current year, one third owe for two years and one third owe more than two years of dues. We now have $3000 outstanding and can no longer carry these members. As much as it pains me, I am about to send Knight Alert Notices to ten members who have effectively disconnected themselves from the Knights, informing them of their pending suspension from our Brotherhood. This is a serious move, I know, but we cannot continue to offer these brothers amnesty for past dues if they cannot come current. I personally reached out to the ten men over the past two years, trying my best NOT to reach this point, but after voting in past meetings and with the full support of your elected officers, I must take this action for the future health of our council. I have been following all the protocols expected by both our State Officers as well as Supreme in an attempt to retain these brothers as members and I know we will take a hit in meeting our membership goals, but most 1

members in our council have known this date was coming. Brother Knights, we are a vibrant brotherhood and I know we can make great things happen, even with our challenges. Vivat Jesus, Mike Pranger, GK #1634 Holy Father s prayer intention for November Universal In Service of Peace That the language of love and dialogue may always prevail over the language of conflict. The event was held on Thursday, Oct 18 th for the St. Matthew School kids and Sunday Oct 21 st during the St. Matthew Fall Festival. The winners will be going on to the State Competition in Beaverton on November 18 th. Thank you to all the Knights that helped to put this on especially Mike Pranger. 2

Steve Hunker - 503-544-1627 or hunkerwaydown@frontier.com Memorial Mass Friday, November 9, 2018 at 7:00 pm. The location for our Memorial Mass for our departed loved ones will be at Visitation in Verboort. Please join us in remembering our deceased Brother Knights. We had decided to change our Memorial Mass to include recently deceased Knights and recently deceased family members of Knights. For deceased Knights, we will still be reading the obituaries of those who passed away this past year during the Mass, but we would also like to include intentions for all deceased family members of Knights who have passed away this past year during the Prayers of the Faithful. If you would like to add your loved one s names to the list, please e-mail Brother Mike Wanner at finsec1634@gmail.com with your loved one s name and their relationship to a Knight of Columbus (extended family included). You can also call Brother Mike at 503-693-7507. 3 Mark Your Calendar For those of you who have not yet attained your 2 nd or 3 rd degree, there will be a Formation (2 nd ) and Knighthood (3 rd ) Degree ceremony at St. Matthew's Parish Hall on December 1 st at 1pm. This is a unique opportunity to get both degrees right here in Hillsboro. Often it's necessary to chase them down in some other part of the state. For more information, please contact Duane Morris at dlmorri@gmail.com or 503-709-4858. Cross of the Apostolate The Cross of the Apostolate is ONE symbol (image) that cannot be divided. Nevertheless, I will divide it for study and understanding purposes only: 1. The dove; 2. The big cross; 3. The heart; 4. The spear; 5.

The crown of thorns; 6. The small cross; 7. The light and the clouds. The dove: symbolizes the Holy Spirit. It is found on the upper part and presides over the totality of the Cross of the Apostolate. The extended wings reveal our God who desires to receive all his children through reconciliation. The big Cross: if you notice, the cross is not placed on a base, it is in fact, floating. It is a big cross and heavy. It is scary for some, because it is inviting to be carried-out. All we human beings are the recipients of Salvation, and here the big cross represents it. (help me here: maybe the big cross represents our own life. What do you think? The heart: We said that the big cross frightens us, and in a certain way makes us run from it. The cross has a heart in the center where the two arms meet. It is a living heart. The heart symbolizes the presence of Jesus, who transforms the heavy cross in a lighter way. The cross, with the heart, invites us to see it with optimism and patience without letting us be frightened or despairing. The heart also represents Love. Remember when you draw a heart to let someone know you love him/her? Love illuminates and transforms human suffering. The cross by itself is something like a path without an exit, but when it is offered it gets united to Christ. This experience brings consolation and peace. The person who is attracted to the heart which remains in the center, is less selfish and more an apostle of Jesus. The person becomes a living Cross of the Apostolate. It is not easy to be a living Cross of the Apostolate because the human struggles; nevertheless, in it the person discovers the orientation of Jesus towards the Father, which brings one to happiness. The spear: The heart is alive but has a spear that pierces the heart open in a violent way. It is not usual for us to see a heart hurt by a spear. We have seen other types of violence; but this way is unacceptable that frightens us. This means to contemplate the heart of Jesus pierced open by a spear. Human ingratitude causes this, but Jesus closes his heart to no one; rather he is available to the needs of each one of us. The crown of thorns: In this time, the crown of thorns is not on the head but on the heart. This crown of thorns signifies the sins of His priests and all religious. It signifies the sins against the human dignity by the world leaders. The thorns are inviting us to pray for the sanctity of all the baptized. The small cross: In the upper part of the heart, we find a small cross of darker color. This small cross expresses the intimate and personal pain of Jesus. The pain of the Son, who suffers seeing that the Father is not loved. It is the pain of man who suffers because of his sins. Man does not love anymore. The small cross is the pain of Jesus caused by the sins of those associated to His plan of salvation. The light and clouds: We find the light and clouds around the Cross of the Apostolate which represents the presence of God, The Heavenly Father. This image of light and clouds embraces the Cross of the Apostolate. The creator of the entire universe is inviting us to listen to His Beloved Son. Conclusion: 1. The Cross of the Apostolate is not valid for what it is, but for what it means, because in addition to being a Trinitarian expression, it invites us to reproduce it, in ourselves, through love, purity and sacrifice. 2. It is a map or sketch of the spiritual life, because like Jesus, we have to go through the labyrinths of our mission, allowing ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit, while doing the will of the Heavenly Father. The above, without losing joy and optimism, because the Cross of the Apostolate, from the light that illuminates it, is not a painful icon, but a message that drives us towards hope. 3. It is not an abstract or suffering spirituality, because it implies living it, with dedication and enthusiasm, throughout the length and breadth of our lives; that is, wherever we are Fr. Agustín Rodríguez M.Sp.S. Associate Pastor St Matthew Closing Verse As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood will live because of me. 4
