FROM FATHER AMAL It has been two months since I joined the St. Bernard Parish family. Thanks for your support. I had a joint council meeting (Parish Pastoral Council and Parish Finance Council) along with our wonderful Parish Staff on August 21 st and presented my vision for the Parish. Building relationships is very important in a Parish: A relationship with Christ and each other. The patron saint of our Parish, St. Bernard, is inviting us all to spiritual renewal by building a relationship with Christ and he stressed the social justice issues by inviting us to build a true community of the Disciples of Christ. Below is a snapshot of these ideas: 1. We have diverse groups at St. Bernard (Hmong, Hispanic, Asian, German, Irish, Polish, etc.). My idea is to throw a multi-cultural potluck dinner (next summer in August around the feast day of St. Bernard) which helps us to build up a relationship with each other. A multi-cultural dinner could help us connect with each other and the neighborhood. 2. In appreciation of what parishioners do for the parish, I am planning an appreciation breakfast every June. 3. The Discipleship nights on Wednesdays starting this fall can help build a relationship with Christ and all the young adults of the Parish. 4. Adult education such as Bible study, can help us draw strength from the scripture. 5. The people who have lost their spouses can get together once a month at one of the restaurants in town and enjoy fellowship. 6. We are called to reach out to people who are divorced, single and are in the process of annulments. I would like to start a separate ministry: Singles Ministry. 7. Young people are the future of the parish. I propose we invite the young adults together once a month for a potluck dinner at their houses to help them make a connection with each other and our parish. Once they feel comfortable and get to know me, they can be invited to Alpha sessions where they learn to build a relationship with Christ. 8. My focus is also on building the community of Disciples of Christ. We can identify those parish families that are struggling to make ends meet. In other words, the poor, families that are homeless, families dealing with addiction and try to help them get back on their feet. Also, visiting the people who are in prison and, once they get out of prison, having a mentor to guide them. 9. I will be inviting back to church, people who have left the parish due to various reasons. Also, the invitation can be offered to the non-practicing Catholics. It may take time to work on these visions at St. Bernard; however, we have to plant seeds and let them flourish as we build up our Community in Christ. I hope you all will support this vision. Let us together work as one Body of Christ to make our parish more vibrant parish. Have a blessed holiday weekend. God Bless you and your family, Fr. Amal. May their soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. PARISH LIFE Call to Prayer before Mass This weekend, we will begin something new before our weekend liturgies. Two minutes before Mass begins, we will have a Called to Prayer. This will be a time for each of us to clear our minds and prepare for the Sacred Liturgy. Once we enter into the sacred space of the church we are now in the presence of God and in his Holy Place. During this time we will join the musicians in singing a simple response called, Holy Ground. Here are the words: This is Holy Ground, we re standing on Holy Ground, for the Lord is present and where he is, is holy. This is Holy Ground, we re standing on Holy Ground, for the Lord is present and where he is, is holy. (by John Michael Talbot) All High School Youth are invited to join us for a Youth Forum on Wednesday, September 12. We ll have dinner, some fun activities and be ready to listen and plan for youth in our Parish. The forum will run from 6:30 pm-8:00 pm in the Activity Center. Creating a Parish where strengths thrive. Everybody has strengths, the unique combination of talents, knowledge, and skills that every person possesses. They are the innate traits and abilities people use in their daily lives to complete their work; to relate with others; and to achieve their goals. Decades of Gallup research uncovered 34 strengths that exist at some level within everyone. But, each person has "signature strengths," which dominate their actions and behaviors. From Achiever and Activator to Strategic and Woo, each person has a unique combination of strengths that represent their individual strengths profile. St. Bernard Parish is helping Parishioners discover and develop their strengths. If you are interested or have questions please contact Colleen at 739-0331. FAITH SHARING OPPORTUNITIES When we lack a basic understanding of what the Church teaches, we can feel as if we re on a road without a map, or have the wrong map, or only pieces of the map. So how can we journey to the Father and the eternal life Christ won for us? Without a map, how will we make it to our destination? Rerouting presents us with a sweeping vista of what we believe in a way that makes sense and causes our faith to grow and flourish, both in our hearts and in the world.
