October 2, 2016-27th Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CATHOLIC CHURCH

St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor The parishioners of St. Francis extend our sympathies and condolences to the family of Pauline Hardiek. Pauline s funeral Mass was Friday, the last day of September. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord. This day, 30 September, is also the day that Bernice Matteson retires from St. Francis of Assisi Parish. As you know, she has served the Lord and the parish faithfully for twenty two years! Although she has been part-time, many of you have benefited from her dedication and expertise with her work in the office and the cemetery. She will be greatly missed. We ask God to bless her and reward her as she opens a new chapter in her life. Anita Broom, who also has been part-time for several years, will move into a full time position continuing her work with the finances and accounts as well as contributing in the office. St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most well known and well loved saints in the Church. How blessed we are to live and grow in a parish under his patronage. His feast day is Tuesday, 4 October. On Monday evening we will remember the night when St. Francis passed from this life to eternal life we call the celebration: the Transitus. We will meet in church at 7:30 pm, and then all are invited into the friary for refreshments. Come and celebrate the feast of St. Francis. Thank you to the people who organized and worked on our social for Saturday evening after Mass. This is part of our celebration of the feast of St. Francis as is our blessing of the animals and pets. If you have a favorite pet or animal from the farm you would like blessed, we will meet outside east of St. Clare Hall at 1:00 Sunday afternoon, 2 Oct. And Tuesday, the actual feast day of St. Francis, the 55+ group will enjoy a fall golf cart ride in our city. We will meet at 1 o clock. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE EUCHARISTIC DAY OF PRAYER THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6TH - Please come to pray to our Eucharistic Lord for the end of the evil disregard for human life in our world. Eucharistic Exposition will begin during the Children s Prayer Service at 7:55 AM, and will continue until 6:00 PM, with Benediction at 5:45 PM. Prayer volunteers are needed to please commit to prayer hours in church on the sign-up sheets at the church entrances. If you are homebound or unable to come, your prayers are needed also in whatever way you are able. Pro-life prayer guides are available at church entrances, and daily devotionals are available at www.40daysforlife.com. Thank you for your prayers and sacrifices! Effingham Life Chain will be held today, October 2, Respect Life Sunday, from 2:00-3:00 pm on Keller Drive and Fayette Avenue. A prayer service will be held in the Sacred Heart Parish Center at 1:30 pm. Signs will be furnished. Children are welcome. Refreshments will be served after 3:00 pm in the Sacred Heart Parish Center. For further information, please call Karla Slifer at 217-536-5573. All denominations are invited and urged to attend. Rosary Rally 2016 will be held Saturday, October 15, at noon, at St. Anthony s Memorial Hospital Grotto, south side, 503 N. Maple St., Effingham. If weather is inclement, the rally will be in the Hospital Chapel. America is at a historic crossroad. Secularists are pushing GOD from the public square. Without GOD, where will our leaders get the wisdom to solve the great problems we face? Remember, our Blessed Mother told us that the rosary is our greatest weapon! Join us and over 15,800 other 2016 Rosary Rallies around the United States! Please bring a rosary and a lawn chair. All are welcome! Sponsored by America Needs Fatima. Day of Prayer is Thursday, 6 October. This day is our time and our opportunity to do something more for life. This is part of the Campaign of Life, and we will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament all day, from 8 o clock until Benediction at 5:45 pm. Next Sunday, 9 October, at 2:00 p.m. we will have Communal Anointing in church. This is not a sacrament for the elderly. It is the anointing of the sick, regardless of one s age. There are physical and spiritual benefits from the sacrament. Parish Mission: Once again St. Francis Parish will host Mr. Frank Runyeon for 3 days of drama and humor. Mark your calendars for October 12, 13 &14, when Mr. Runyeon presents Signs of Mercy, Stories of Mercy and Works of Mercy. All are invited to attend. St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Year of Mercy: Increase our faith. This request of the apostles is ours as well. We want more faith. One would think Jesus would surely comply here it is, more faith. But, no, today he talks of mustard seed faith. Less about thoughtful prayer or silent meditation, important as they are. More about action, more about waiting tables, more about attending to other s needs first. How can my prayer and meditation prepare me to serve? Whom shall I wait on, whom shall I serve? In what little ways can I act? Laudato Si: Tuesday, October 4, ends the Season of Creation. We hope that all of us have been more mindful of Mother Earth and our place in creation. Learn from the way the wildflowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. Mt. 6:28-9. Learn from the wildflowers the absolute joy of a desert in bloom reminds us that we do not create nor control this beauty. Wildflowers bloom and grow because of their deep connection to the processes and energies of their environment. One of the greatest challenges of our day is to live and grow within the diversity of all life. We have come to know that the greater the diversity, the greater the health and wholeness of the earth. Communion can no longer be sought for in sameness; rather, it is found in being connected within our differences. It is participating in the questions of diversity, staying in conversation all without losing the ground of one s own being. This week find ways to grow in trust and joy of differences. Invite a non-relative or neighbor for tea and discuss difference: what it means, how are we different, what are the positive points of differences in thinking, acting, worshipping. High School Religious Ed Sophomores have Welcome to My World on Wednesday at 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Please meet in the TGS Gym. Parents, we still need 3 more volunteers to help at the various stations. Please let us know if you are able to help us! Freshmen, juniors and seniors all meet at their regular scheduled class time 7:20 pm 8:30 pm. Sophomore Retreat is scheduled for October 22! Please have your permission slips turned in this Wednesday in class! Youth Notes: Youth Councils meet TODAY, October 2, from 6:00 7:30 pm in the Teen Center for junior high and high school. We ll have prayer, games, and planning! Come check it out! No Teen Center on October 7 because of the holiday weekend! Be safe! Jr. High and High School Pumpkin Painting will be held October 22 from 9 am 11 am in the Teen Center! We ll provide the pumpkins and the paint! You supply any accessories you d like to add! Pumpkins will be delivered to our senior parishioners on Wednesday, October 26th! God bless and direct all who work to achieve this goal! JUNIOR HIGH- Classes take place every Wednesday night at the Junior High Building from 7:20 to 8:30 p.m. Grade 7 classes were visited by the ladies of the CCW and the men s Holy Name sodality and presented with the gift of a Bible, which they will be using every week on class nights, and hopefully, will continue to use throughout their life. Anthony Vahling, Jeremy Deters, Caleb Hoene, Cody Bushue, Leighton Blankenship Holy Humor...One day a little girl was watching her mother doing the dishes and she suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair on her brunette head. She asked inquisitively, Why are some of your hairs white, momma? Her mother replied, Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white. The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, Momma, how come all of grandma s hairs are white? A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, Now class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face. Yes, the class said. Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn t run into my feet? A little fellow shouted, Cause your feet ain t empty.
