2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed "I will not reject anyone who comes to me." Today, as we remember the faithful departed, we can rejoice in these words from Jesus. He promises that he will welcome those who come to him. He is so anxious to embrace us! As the catechism puts it, "All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation" (CCC 1030). Jesus' whole message here is important. Eternal salvation is available to all, but it does involve a level of participation on our part. "Everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life," Jesus says in today's Gospel. When it's authentic, of course, this belief is more than mere lip service. Understanding that Jesus is our savior and our God is one thing. Coming to him is another; it takes belief to the next level of personal commitment. This involves choices, decisions, and actions. Coming to Jesus means being near him-through a spiritual life that involves a real relationship with him-as well as being focused on him by charting our life's course in the light of faith. This is what we strive to do during the ups and downs of this life. But it isn't always easy. Even as faithful Christians we often fall short of perfect cooperation with God. But this is not cause for despair! Today we remember that even Christians who die still "imperfectly purified" can ultimately share the blessing of heaven. We pray for these souls in purgatory to come closer and closer to perfect union with the Lord. And meanwhile, we strive to increase our own union with Christ in the hopes of sharing eternity with him and with the whole communion of saints, including our loved ones who have gone before us in faith Liturgical Publications Inc Year of Consecrated Life. To Embrace the Future with Hope - Like everyone else, religious women and men have troubles, dark nights of the soul, disappointments and sicknesses, and they grow older and slow down. It is here that all see the face of Jesus who became human and knows what it is to be human. Jesus did this out of love and did not run away from suffering. Jesus said, Learn from me In aligning our lives with that of Jesus, all can say, When I am weak, then I am strong. Pray for the Sisters and Friars that they may be faithful and strong during times of tribulations. To the Parents of Servers: I am trying to prepare the serving schedule for the Christmas Masses. This year, on Christmas Eve there will be a 4:00pm Mass at which there are 4 servers (from Gr. 5-12), a 6:00pm Mass at which there are 4 servers (from Gr. 5-12) and a 10:30pm Mass at which there are 12 torch bearers (from Gr. 4,5,6,7 & 8) and 5 servers (from Gr. 8-12). On Christmas Day there is a 9:00am Mass at which we need 4 servers (from Gr. 4-12). If you and your family are planning to attend any of these Masses, and your child is interested in serving the Mass or being a torch bearer, please notify me. I am well aware that some families celebrate their family Christmas on Christmas Eve and some on Christmas Day. To help me avoid a lot of scheduling hassles, I would appreciate knowing if your child could and would possibly be able to serve any of these Masses. I ask that you please contact me at by Wednesday, November 18th, if your child is willing and able to serve any of these times. This way I can have these assignments listed in the December schedule. I am also trying to schedule servers for the Masses on the holy day, January 1 (Mary Mother of God). Mass times are on Thursday, December 31 (New Year s Eve) at 4:00pm and 5:30pm and on Friday, January 1 at 8:45 am and 10:30am. If your child is willing to serve any of these Masses, please let me know by November 18th. Thank you for any help that you can give me! Religious Education News GRADE SCHOOL Grades 3D and 3K have the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday, November 9. Grade 1 and 2 This is the Second Week preparing the Shoeboxes for the children throughout the world the Mission Project for grades 1 and 2. Filled shoeboxes may be brought to the classroom or delivered to the Religious Ed Office by the deadline Monday, November 16. Thanks for supporting the attitude of mission-mindfulness! Grade 3 This is the Second Week of considering a new item for mom, dad, or child to donate to the Gift and Giving Tree Store. The stores in the Museum Dining Room and St. Clare Hall will be set up on Monday, November 30. Students in separate grades will be able to shop on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of December 1, 2, and 3. Parents or others may call to volunteer to help set up on Monday; help younger children shop on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; and then take down on Thursday after the closing. This Sunday, in imitation of the widow who gave a little donation in the Gospel reading, the children will be receiving small envelopes, in which they are encouraged to place pennies, a nickel, dime, quarter each week as our offering during our play Mass. JUNIOR HIGH- There is no class scheduled for Wednesday, November 11. Catechists and young people need to honor their family members, who have served in the military, in some way on this day. She was able to eat for a year...the jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry...1 Kings 17:15-16 We know almost nothing about this woman s story. We don t know what she went through or how she got to this point. All we know is that when Elijah came along, she had given up. She was out of options and ideas. If you have ever reached a moment like this in your life, you may also have learned what she learned that God can still reach us when we have exhausted all our other resources. We can still turn to God at rock bottom...especially then. Because that is when we are most acutely aware of our vulnerability. We turn to God, raw in the knowledge that we depend utterly on him for everything even for the very life he breathes into us at every moment. God responds by holding us close and calling us his own, long after we have given up. I need you, Lord, I need you now and always. Food and Faith Series: Nov. 19, Join us at the Chiara Center located in Springfield for our dinner series: nourish the body and spirit as we share a meal and explore the rich symbolism of bread. The evening of November 19th, Sr. Renita Brummer (a native of Bishop Creek) will be presenting on Spirituality of Picnics featuring Chiara Center s stained glass window of the famous picnic of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi. She will share the many accounts of sharing a meal from the New Testament and how food connects us to earth and to each other. The cost is $20 per person or $35 per couple. Prayer for Veterans LIVING FAITH Karla Manternach Heavenly Father, on this day, help us remember those who gave of themselves to keep us safe and secure. Enkindle in our consciences a desire to serve those who served their country selflessly. Give us the grace to aid those who have given aid and protection to us and others both here and overseas. Let us never forget the causes for which they fought or the bravery they showed on the battlefield. May we be always be mindful of those who paid the price for our freedom, just as your Son gave his life to free us from the bondage of sin. Amen.
