2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From The Pastor Dear Parishioners, As you know, Br. Pauli will be leaving us at the end of the month for his new assignment at St. Anthony s church in St. Louis. I know I will personally miss him, and I wish him only the best with his new community. I wish to thank him for his dedication and commitment to his Franciscan way of life. Br. Pauli was a good friar and community member. He worked to provide for the other friars needs. The friars enjoyed his delicious meals and his seasonal decorations that always made our friary a happy home. Above all, we in the parish, owe a debt of gratitude to Brother for the many boys and girls he trained to serve at the altar of God. I am sure over these past fourteen years he has literally trained hundreds of boys and girls to be the best servers possible. There are many other jobs he did behind the scenes for the benefit of the parish and the friars. Brother took pride in his work and did it with a joyful heart. We will miss you, Br. Pauli, but we send you on your way with the Lord's choicest blessings. Next Saturday evening, October 16th, after the 5:30 pm Mass, we will have a little party in the mini park. Food and beverages (lemonade and tea) will be provided. If you so choose, you may bring other beverages for you and your family. Please bring your own lawn chairs and blankets, if needed. I hope many of you, along with your families, especially those who Brother trained as servers and sacristans, will personally thank Br. Pauli for all that he has done for them and the parish. Br. Pauli, may the Lord bless you, may He shine His face on you and may He bring you peace all the days of your life. Again, Brother, thank you so much and we all wish you well. May the good Lord grant your every wish and fulfill your dreams. Pax et Bonum Peace & All Good Peace, Love, Joy Fr. Austin Rosary Rally Let your light shine before people so that they may see your good works and give glory to God. Be a part of our Public Rosary Rally on Saturday, October 16th, at noon, at the Grotto by the Teutopolis Grade School. Our nation needs prayers. People are becoming more secularistic. As a result, God and religious values are ignored or pushed aside. Prayer is needed to change that. Pray the Rosary for our nation. Why Sunday? Sunday, the Lord s Day, is...the pre-eminent day of the liturgical assembly, the day of the Christian family, and the day of joy and rest from work. Sunday is the foundation and kernel of the whole liturgical year. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1198). From early times, Sunday has been the day for baptism. In Acts 2:41, we read, Those who accepted his (Peter s) message were baptized, and about three thousand were added that day (Pentecost). When the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) developed, the catechumens were baptized at the Easter Vigil. The Catholic Encyclopedia states: At an early date the administration of the Sacrament (Baptism) was normally restricted to the Easter or Pentecost Vigil (Vol, II, p. 63). The Church regards every Sunday as a little Easter that celebrates the Lord s Resurrection to a new life. By our baptism, we are given a new life in the Church. Sacraments are community events. The Church encourages baptism to be ordinarily celebrated on Sunday when the Christian community gathers to celebrate the Paschal Mystery and our sharing in the new life Christ makes possible for us. RCIA is currently meeting in the museum dining room on Tuesday evenings beginning at 7:00 p.m. Come join us as we learn more about the Catholic faith. No commitments at this time, just information. We d love to have you. Discovering Franciscan Spirituality Most people recall the statement made by Mother Teresa: Do something beautiful for God. Hopefully, most people already are doing something for God. Active Catholics looking for a meaningful, challenging, and rewarding endeavor to put God first are invited to inquire about the Secular Franciscan Order. Initial and ongoing formation is available to assist in advancing in spiritual growth. Upcoming opportunities are a one hour session for beginners on October 17, 2010 and a half day of recollection for everyone on October 19, Both of these will be held at St. Clare Hall in Teutopolis. Both will begin at 1:00 pm. For more information, telephone Fr. Ken at or Jim Weis at As always, inactive professed members are encouraged to take up the challenge of getting back in step.

4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 BIBLE STUDY continues its journey through Scriptures with the video series, A Quick Journey Through the Bible. The sessions are held on the 3 rd Thursday of the month in St. Clare Hall at 10:00 a.m. Recent Baptisms We congratulate and welcome to our faith family: Isabella Catherine Niebrugge, daughter of Jason and Michelle (Dirks) Niebrugge Stella Louise Esker, daughter of Matthew and Kristi (Schultheis) Esker Dylan Joseph Huber, son of Philip and Holly (Roedl) Huber James Thomas Hoelscher, son of Jent Wendt and Justine Hoelscher Claire Marie Probst, daughter of Eric and Bridget (Westjohn) Probst And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. Luke 17:15-16 When our children are young, we school them in saying thank you for any courtesy, gift or praise given them. What we re really teaching them is awareness, the ability to recognize and name what they ve received as grace. And so it goes for us for the rest of our lives. Before we can say thank you, we have to live in awareness of what comes to us as gifts large and small: the start of a new day, a brilliant sunset, a word of affirmation, a job offer, the successful end of a course of treatment, a hug from a child, a relationship on the mend. Every one of the ten lepers had been healed, but only one recognized and named God s healing presence in his life. Only one realized, returned and gave thanks. Loving God, lead me into awareness of your gracious gifts to me today. LIVING FAITH Sympathy We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Catherine Bussman and Mildred Nash. May their souls rest in peace. Teutopolis Sportsbackers Men s Steak Stag The Teutopolis Sportsbackers would like to invite all men to the K of C Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 20, for a steak stag. 5 October 10, 2010 Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time page 5 Family Corner This year the theme for Catechetical Sunday was Marriage: Sacrament of Enduring Love. It seems strange for a year long theme for catechesis but if one thinks about it, how appropriate. It seems as if family life is breaking down. Not in a rush like a tidal wave but a slow, steady eroding of what marriage and a family is all about. I recently was asked to pray for a young man with two children whose wife left him. In my own family a former sister-in-law left four children for someone she met on the internet. She never laid eyes on him before. What is it that makes things always greener on the other side? When in formation, we laughed as our directress told us that goodness attracts but remember, once you have made your vows you are unavailable. When things get tough, jobs are lost, incomes aren t coming in or serious illness, with large medical bills, come along what is it that makes some run off and others stay and work through the difficulties? The rite of marriage has many symbols that speak to the commitment being made. Good wedding planning includes songs with words that speak of the mutual love and forever-ness of the sacrament. A comic strip this week reminded me that it s the simple, ordinary things in the rites of the Church that speak to far deeper realities. I hope you enjoy this Hi and Lois with the deeper message a simple ring ceremony brings with it. Handicap Breakfast The Teutopolis Knights of Columbus are sponsoring their annual Mentally and Physically Handicapped benefit breakfast on Sunday, October 17th from 7:00 am until 12:00 noon. Contact Pam Barack at For any questions contact Bobbi Kinkelaaar, RN, at Holy Humor...A Woman s Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray for the wisdom to understand my husband, the love to forgive him and the patience for his moods. Because, Lord, if I pray for strength, I ll just beat him to death. CCW Meets On Monday October 18th, the St. Francis CCW will meet at 7:00 pm in St. Clare Hall.
