In Houston, the warm weather shall persist but the summer break will soon be over. In less than two weeks, our children return to resume their schooling. It is quite difficult to realize that another summer is almost gone and that a new school year is upon us. We do look forward to an exciting year of learning, adventure and formation here at St. Cecilia. This Sunday, we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration. The Synoptic Gospels all relate the transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain, traditionally identified as Mount Tabor. We read the account from Matthew in the 17th chapter of his gospel. Matthew describes this episode as a vision, specifically as an apocalyptic vision that anticipates the future glory of his resurrection, thus making the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus part of the apocalyptic events. As the disciples make their way to Jerusalem, where Jesus will suffer death, the disciples are given a vision of who Jesus truly is and what he will be in the Kingdom of God. Let us then spend time gazing at the transfigured Lord today so that we may, like the disciples, get a glimpse of who he truly is for us. For those of you who are keen observers, you may notice that work is being done in the choir area of the church. This is to accommodate the console of the pipe organ that will be installed in the church. As I have mentioned before, this organ comes from the old Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral. With the generous help of a parishioner and other benefactors, it is being refurbished and installed at St. Cecilia. We pray that this project will be completed by early September. We welcome Fr. Michael Chowning, O.F.M. to St. Cecilia this weekend. Fr. Michael is a Franciscan friar and he comes to us to speak about their mission of serving the poor and the needy at parishes in Jamaica, Cincinnati, Detroit, Shreveport and New Orleans. Please welcome him to our community and support his mission. In the meantime, let us pray for one another. Sincerely in Christ, Father Francis The parish office will be closed Tuesday, August 15 in observance of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation.

Michael Chowning, O.F.M. speaking to us from the Franciscan Mission Office on behalf of the Franciscan Friars, Province of St. John the Baptist. The Franciscan Friars of Saint John the Baptist Province have been serving the poor and marginalized since Friars first arrived in Cincinnati in 1844 to work with German speaking immigrants. Today nearly one hundred and seventy-five years later, the Friars continue to serve those neediest, including serving six parishes on the island of Jamaica, and a friar who serves as the Secretary of Formation for novices in Kenya, Africa. In addition, they continue to serve in the inner cities of Cincinnati, Detroit, Shreveport and New Orleans. They operate soup kitchens, schools, offer tutoring, outreach to the homeless and bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all in our midst. We thank you for this opportunity to share with the works of the Franciscan Friars.

Participants must simply possess a reasonably good singing voice (the ability to match and maintain pitch) and be willing to commit to the rehearsals and services. Weekly at the 11:00 am Sunday liturgy (September May), as well as at the major liturgical celebrations of the year. When Are The Rehearsals? The Gathering Place is a stimulating, loving and fun environment where volunteers offer interactive and affirming activities designed for members of the congregation and community who suffer with memory loss. The Gathering Place is a partnership between St. Cecilia and Interfaith CarePartners and is one of 58 participating congregations that offer 3 1/2 hours of respite from the challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia while they enjoy games, crafts, entertainment lunch and other fun activities. Caregivers may choose to use this opportunity for respite, or may opt to participate along with their care partner. To volunteer, call Lorrie Dawlearn at 713-783-7903. To register a loved one to attend this free program, please contact Tom Breaux at 713-682-5995 ext. 210.
