Carrying a celebration through the eighth day allows for more celebrations, more aspects of the mystery to be opened in our midst. The mystery of God in human flesh and history is ritually remembered through these several weeks from Christmas day to the Baptism of the Lord. On this octave day a very specific aspect of this mystery holds our attention: Mary is the Mother of God. Contemporary Catholics call recall a number of names for this day, titles dictated by Church tradition, society, and various popes. It is New Year s Day; it is often still called the circumcision of Jesus; it has been decreed as World Day of Peace. In the current calendar s preparation, research showed that it is the oldest feast of Mary in our Church. Amidst the echoes of Christmas and the visit of the shepherds, we take time to celebrate Mary. The primacy of the celebration of Mary as the Mother of God indicates the primacy of this title. Throughout the liturgical year, we will remember her life, celebrating the Immaculate Conception, the Birth of Mary, the Visitation, the Lady of Mount Carmel. We recall her in the Eucharistic prayers and at night prayer. We start now with her most profound and basic life, Mary, Mother of God: God sent forth his Son born of a woman. The Lord bless you and keep you! The Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace! (Nm 6:24-26)

JANUARY 1, 2017 THE SOLEMNITY OF MARY PAGE 3 Eucharistic Adoration Day On Wednesday, January, 11, 2017 we will have our monthly Eucharistic Adoration Day. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed from 9:00 am - 6:45 pm. This is a great opportunity for us to spend some personal time with Our Lord during this special day. Sometimes the burdens of our lives can be so demanding, that the Lord asks us to let Him help us carry them. Sign up sheets will posted in the Narthex with hours that will be open and in need of volunteers. A Special Thank You I would like to thank everyone who helped to make our Christmas Season so very special: Deacon David Miller; Deacon Dan Waruszewski; the members of our Parish Office Staff; our Pastoral Staff; our Parish Maintenance Staff; our Music Directress, Madlyn DeRito; our Cantors and Choir; Sacristans; Altar Servers; Lectors; Eucharistic Ministers; Ushers; Liturgy Committee; Environmental Arts Committee; and members of Life Teen. Without all of your hard work, we would never be able to have such a holy and beautiful celebration. Also, many thanks to everyone who sent greetings, food and gifts to our Parish Staff, to me, our Parish, the poor of our community and the many other charitable organizations we have helped. Your generous response to the various contributions tells us of your concern for the needs of your parish and the community. We are grateful for your generosity. As we enter the New Year, we ask you to keep us in your prayers and in your love as you are constantly in ours. May God continue to bless and protect you and may the grace and peace of the Child of Bethlehem fill your hearts and homes throughout the year. As we begin our New Year, may God continue to bless you with His peace and love. With Sincerest Thanks, Father Robert J. Cedolia, Pastor MEN S RETREAT The dates for the Holy Sepulcher Men s Retreat at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center, 148 Monastery Ave., Pittsburgh, PA, have been scheduled for April 21, 22 and 23 of 2017.
