Liturgical Bits & Bytes The Gloria is used on all Sundays and major feasts throughout the year except during Lent and Advent; is a hymn to praise God for God s mercy and to acclaim the presence of the risen Lord in our midst; is omitted during Lent because of the Church s desire to focus on the penitential aspect of that season, and during Advent, because for a time the Church also viewed that season as penitential. That Advent has never been considered as having the same penitential cast as Lent is shown by the fact that the Alleluia continues to be sung during Advent. The Gloria is omitted and in contrast comes back joyfully in the angels song at Christmas. Copyright 2008 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved. Sunday Readings & Reflections Readings for Sunday, January 22, 2017 Following Jesus Reading I Isaiah 8:23-9:3 (the Prince of Peace) Reading II 1 Corinthians 11:10-13, 17 (factions) Gospel Matthew 4:12-23 (Jesus in Capernaum) Key Passage: Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people. (Matthew 4:23) Adult: To whom could you preach the gospel of Jesus Christ this week with actions rather than words? Youth: What could you do for someone this week that would tell them something about Jesus? Saint of the Week St. Francis de Sales On January 24 th the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint Francis de Sales. St. Francis was born at Savoy (France) in 1567. After being ordained a priest he labored diligently for the restoration of Catholicism in his country. Chosen bishop of Geneva, St. Francis showed himself as a true pastor toward his priests and the lay faithful, strengthening their faith by his writings, works and personal example. St. Francis died at Lyons on December 28, 1622 and was buried at Annecy on January 24 th, the day of his feast. Saint Francis de Sales is the patron saint of journalists and writers. Parish Offertory Due to an early bulletin deadline the offertory numbers were not available. They will be in next week s bulletin. The budget is based on a weekly average offertory of $15,942.00 per week. Thank you for continued support of our parish. ST. JOHN CATHOLIC SCHOOL South Garand St., Winslow 872-7115 www.stjohnschoolwinslow.org National Catholic Schools Week Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service We wish to thank all of our Parish Family because Catholic schools benefit all year long from the religious guidance, prayers and support parishes provide. Many parishes join in this week-long celebration. Mon., Jan. 30: In Our Community/The Value of Service When students take part in service activities they live the values and faith they have gained through their Catholic education. Students will donate books for a book sale to be held at school. Our service project will begin with a local Animal Shelter Representative sharing with students the work they do and how we can make a difference. Tues., Jan. 31: Honoring Students/Strong Foundations Catholic School Week is a time to reflect on the benefits of Catholic education and how the grounding in faith, knowledge and service impacts their lives. The theme for the day will be Building. Students will be building structures with different materials. Students will also participate in enrichment workshops offered by staff. Wed., Feb. 1: Celebrating the Nation/Good Citizens On National Appreciation Day for Catholic Schools, students, families, educators and other Catholic school supporters communicate the value of Catholic education and the contribution Catholic schools make to the nation and their role in preparing students to be good citizens. Students will pray for the nation and recognize all those who serve it. We invite all St. John School supporters to attend Mass with our students at 8:00AM at St. John. Our day will end with a prayer service for our Nation. Thur., Feb. 2: Celebrating Vocations/Serving our Lord By focusing on faith, knowledge and service, Catholic schools prepare children to use their God-given talents to their fullest potential. This week offers an opportunity for students to explore the many life paths that enable them to use their talents well in the service of God and others-by answering the call to a religious vocation, by nurturing a family through sacramental marriage, by volunteering in church activities and charities, and/or by pursuing a career that makes the world a better place. We will celebrate today by creating appreciation cards for our priests. Fri., Feb. 3: Celebrating Staff/Thanking our Supporters Theme for the day will be Country Western Day. We will begin our day with a Muffin Morning from 7:15-8:00AM-all are welcome. Students and families will then enjoy a game board activity. Sat., Feb. 4: Celebrating Families/Living Faith at Home In honor of our School Family we will be having a special Movie/Pizza night starting at 5:00 PM. All are invited to attend-please call the school to reserve spot. Students work will be showcased and a slide show will be presented before the movie. Popcorn and treats will be available.

Ruth recently visited several places in Kenya, and created a slide presentation to show the parents and children. Also included were pictures from her visit to South America last year. Afterwards, the children created Care Packs of various school supplies and small toys to share with the children at a school in Kenya. Because of the cost of postage, and the chance that a package might not reach its destination in Africa, Ruth told us of another way to help. Donating money in $25 amounts will buy a handmade tote bag to be given to a mother who has just given birth. Not only does the mother get a nice gift, but the money pays for a native person to create the bag so the gift is two-fold! If you would like to help in this way contact Ruth Oakley at the Diocesan Missions Office, 773-6471. Thank you Mary for bringing in snacks Fit for a King Three Kings that is, for the feast of the Epiphany, when the magi journeyed to see the new born King bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh Our second graders are actively studying for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Both the workshop and celebration of the sacrament are being held on Saturday, March 4. Books completed at home need to be passed in at the retreat, or can be brought to the Faith Formation Center before March 4.
