(Wisdom 7:7-11). Psalm Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy! (Psalm 90). Second Reading Indeed the word of God is living and effective (Hebrews 4:12-13). Gospel It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God (Mark 10:17-30 [17-27]).The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. (Closed Sundays) WORDS OF WISDOM The spirit of wisdom, as we discover in today s first reading, comes to those who pray for her. Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is sharper than any twoedged sword. We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to him seeking answers to his most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to fulfill God s commands, more was asked of him. This is no less true for us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

First 28th Sunday in of Ordinary Advent - December Time October 3, 201714, 2018 I am a Francophile, which is defined by Wikipedia as a person who has a strong affinity towards any or all of the French language, French history, French culture or French people. How did this happen? Well, last week I shared how I spent time in the U.K.; that same year (1970), I attended the Institut Catholique de Paris for continued studies in catechetics: and I fell in love with Parish and things French. So, a few French things are going to happen here at Holy Spirit within the next several weeks. The French Boys Choir ( Les Petits Chanteurs de France ) will be coming to Holy Spirit on Sunday, October 28, at 7:00 p.m. The choir of 19 boys, from ages 9 to 17 years old is conducted by Veronique Thomassin- Olivier, and accompanied by François Olivier, who is also the Titular of the Choir Organ at the prestigious church St. Eustache at Paris. The Choir will offer a concert which includes music of the sixteenth century and the wellknown Hallelujah from Handel, Ave Maria from Gounod as well as music pieces of the French folklores. The concert is free, but there will be a free-will offering. On Saturday, November 3, at 9:00 a.m. there will be a Virtual Pilgrimage of Lourdes, France. This will be a 90-minute presentation. During this guided Lourdes experience, you will immerse yourself in the Gospel Message of Lourdes as given by Our Lady to St. Bernadette. You will have the opportunity to touch the Grotto Rock and to experience the healing grace of Lourdes Water. As part of this spiritual opportunity to draw nearer to God with Our Lady and St. Bernadette, you will receive a Eucharistic blessing and pray the Rosary. Come and experience the healing grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ through his Immaculate Mother. The next best thing to visiting Lourdes itself is a Virtual Pilgrimage without the travel. The pilgrimage is free, but there will be a freewill offering. Have you been wondering what ministry you could participate in at Holy Spirit? We have a Social Committee that plans different functions for the Church. We hold meetings once a month or every other month. If you re interested in joining to be a part of the fun, please reach out to Kristal Urso k.castillourso@icloud.com Our next meeting will be September and we will go over our events already planned. Hope to see you in our group! Upcoming Social Events: Adults Only Cocktail Night date still to be decided Christmas Ornament Painting 12/1 Both of these events will take place in the church: Sunday, October 28, 7:00 p.m. French Boys Choir Saturday, November 3, 9:00 a.m. Lourdes Tour Hope to see many of you at each of these events! Page 4 How does our church stay looking new and beautiful? A group of dedicated Altar Angels, Heavenly Dusters and Glorious Glass Cleaners volunteer to ensure that our Sanctuary, Eucharistic Chapel and adjoining areas are kept in pristine condition. If you are detail-oriented, hate dust and love streak free windows, then our Cleaning Ministry is for you and we need your help. For more information, please contact Anita Ware (702) 308-5668.

First 28th Sunday in of Ordinary Advent - December Time October 3, 201714, 2018 Going into Jamaica, I was at a really low point in my faith. My prayer life was nonexistent and my relationship with God was distant and lacking. It felt wrong for me to go on the mission trip whilst struggling in my faith and I worried that I wouldn t be able to give my all. I hoped and prayed that this trip would rekindle my faith and bring me back to God. And I think it s safe to say that s exactly what happened. Every resident, auntie, and Mustard Seed missionary I met impacted my life and faith in their own special way, but the one person who stood out the most to me was a resident named Javan. Javan is wheelchair bound and he cannot communicate like most of us, but he has a heart bigger than anyone I know. Every time he saw me he d give me a huge smile and would always hold my hand every time I talked to him. And when I had to leave, he d grab my shirt and wouldn t let me go until I sat back down with him. I could talk to him for hours and he d just sit there and listen with a smile on his face. His heart is so full of joy despite the challenges and hardships he faces every day. It broke me every time I thought about it. I asked God why Javan was put into his situation when he did nothing but love, and why I was blessed with my life when I ve done nothing to deserve it? Why was he in the wheelchair and I wasn t? It hurt me when I spent time with Javan and the other residents but at the same time, my heart grew. I never realized how much love I could have for others until I went to Jamaica. I went on the trip with the mindset that I was going to help those in need, but in the end, it was they who helped me. Even though many of them had nothing, they were rich in something else. Love. Each resident I met was a blessing in my life. They all had their own stories and I was lucky enough to get a little glimpse into their lives. I m so grateful that I got to experience this trip and I m so thankful to all of you who supported our mission team. It hurt to leave the residents of Sophie s Place but I realized that a part of me will always stay in Jamaica. This trip was an unforgettable experience and I am so excited to go again. Clay Orfrecio Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Shortly after he was elected as our Holy Father, Pope Francis challenged clergy and laity alike to become missionary disciples. World Mission Sunday joins all Catholics of the world all of us children of God - into one community of faith as missionaries in the name of Christ. At Mass the weekend of October 20 and October 21, we recommit ourselves to our common vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries, through prayer, participation in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. This year, Pope Francis addresses his World Mission Sunday message to us as we live out the adventure of being children of God. What a wonderful way to imagine the mission we have received from the Lord! It is a revitalizing adventure. When all the children of God, at every stage of life, reflect on the fact that our lives are a mission, our faith remains ever young. As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday here at home, we share in those celebrations taking place in every parish, seminary, school and convent all over the world. Together with children of God in every corner of the globe, we become voices for mission, providing the prayerful and financial support necessary to bring the Lord s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope s missions. I am a mission on this earth that is the reason why I am here in this world. In a world where so much divides us, World Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as children of God, his missionaries! And it provides an opportunity to support the life-giving presence of the Church among the poor and marginalized in more than 1,111 mission dioceses. Your prayerful and financial support this one Sunday will help the whole world. May the Lord continue to bless you and your families, I remain Sincerely yours in the Risen Lord, George Leo Thomas Bishop of Las Vegas Page 5

New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of loss and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful and meaningful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one.
