JANUARY 14, 2018 PSALTER WEEK II From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Today, we begin the Sunday Cycle B, the year of the Gospel of Mark. The Messianic Secret is the theme of Mark s Christology, that is, his understanding of Jesus is stated immediately the Good News of Jesus, Messiah, Son of God. (1:1) Mark s purpose is not to prove this statement, but to unfold its implications for faith and discipleship. He uses the perplexing Messianic Secret to convey a proper understanding of Jesus life. Demons acclaim Him as Son of God, but he silences them. At other times, Jesus tells people who have experienced His power to remain silent. Two things are communicated: first, knowledge of Jesus identity comes from superhuman power, either that of the heavens or of the demons; second, proper confession of Jesus should not be made on the basis of the miracles, but only after following Him to the cross. The first human in Mark who correctly addresses Jesus as Son of God is the centurion who, at the moment of Jesus death, says, Truly this man was the Son of God. (15:39) Today s gospel is presenting John the Baptist as the author of the famous sentence, Behold, the Lamb of God, which we Catholics repeat at every Mass before Holy Communion. This sentence originated, like the Baptism Rite, with John the Baptist and cannot be truly understood unless we go back to the animal sacrifices so common at the time of Jesus. In our case, the sacrifice of a lamb, symbol of the Easter (Passover) meal, was slain for the sins of the family offering the sacrifice. John the Baptist prophesied about Jesus sacrificing His life for the salvation of all mankind. So what was the Baptism of John? According to the Gospel of Matthew (3:13-14) John; the son of the priest Zechariah and of his wife, Elizabeth (Luke 1), started preaching a Baptism of Repentance in preparation for the coming of the Messiah. John adopted the striking, symbolic ceremony of Baptism to impress the Jews of his time, about the need of sorrow for their transgressions of Mosaic Law, and so powerfully introduced the Messianic awakening, preparing the way for Jesus preaching. Our noun, baptism, comes from the Greek-Latin noun baptismos, which means to dip into water, to sink, to immerse, to bathe or wash. Ritual washings were common among ancient people and the Jews, as the Book of Leviticus shows. So John went to the River Jordan and, holding the hands of the repentant sinners, immersed them totally under the water. The symbol was very clear; a complete death to sinful life in going under a watery tomb, and coming out of the water, a new life in God for the sinners. Jesus was not a sinner, but he submitted to John s baptism (as He did also to pain, hunger and death) just to identify Himself with our humanity. Jesus then took the symbolic rite of John s baptism and made it a Sacrament, not just a symbol, but a true sign of adoption of all the baptized Christians by the Triune God. With Baptism, we become children of God, removing the old, wrong choice made by Adam (original sin), and accepting the new choice conquered by Jesus with His Incarnation, and Death, and Resurrection. Let us remind ourselves today about our own Baptism and the promises made to Jesus on that day, usually through our parents and godparents; promises to put Jesus ahead of ourselves, of our pride, of our pleasures and of our possessions. Jesus is our Numero Uno, our Number One! Join the 20th Annual Prayer Walk for Life on Monday, January 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 8:30 a.m. Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Frank J. Dewane at our St. Martha Church. Shuttle bus service will be provided from St. Martha to Planned Parenthood where participants will circle the block in prayer for an end to abortion. Those unable to walk are encouraged to participate in Eucharistic Adoration in the Chapel from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Come for an hour or longer. Remember, more than 1,600 babies were aborted last year in Sarasota County. January is the month we remember in a particular way the slaughter of the innocents done by abortionists. Remember the Creator of Life who said: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose Life, then, that you and your descendants may live. On Saturday, January 20, we will have our annual Unity Mass at 5:30 p.m. in the church. We will welcome the Greater Hurst Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Youth Choir and the presider will be Rev. Lorenzo Gonzalez from St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Ft. Myers. Come and join us for this special Mass and a reception in the Fr. Fausto Parish Center immediately following Mass. Fr. Maurice Emelu will be hosting our Parish Mission Sunday, February 4 through Tuesday, February 6. The Mission will begin each evening with the 5:30 p.m. Mass with events following. The focus of the mission will be forgiveness, reconciliation and healing. Please join us for as many evenings as you can! We welcome all of you, winter visitors and residents. Escuchamos esta frase todos los domingos en la Misa pero es muy probable que muchos católicos no sepan quién la pronunció originariamente en la Biblia. La frase aparece en el Evangelio de Juan, en los labios de Juan Bautista a quien dice dos veces. En la lectura del Evangelio de hoy, Juan proclama que Jesús es el Cordero de Dios y entonces dos de los discípulos de Juan siguen a Cristo. Un poco más tarde Andrés, quien escuchó a Juan y siguió a Jesús, lleva a su hermano Simón para que reciba un nuevo nombre: Kefás, es decir Pedro. Si estudiamos a fondo estos versículos de la Biblia vemos la misión de todos los bautizados en el Cuerpo de Cristo: Siempre debemos proclamar nuestra fe en Cristo, para que otros lo sigan. Quizás no sepamos de qué manera la voluntad de Dios obrará en los que llevamos a Cristo, pero eso no es lo importante.
