A very old tradition, however, assures that they are invested with a "see," a link with a local church. Many hundreds of places around the world were dioceses at one time, but are no longer. In England, for example, some of the historic dioceses such as London, Salisbury, and Manchester ceased to be Catholic at the Reformation and their cathedrals passed to the Church of England. The reestablishment of the Catholic Church in the nineteenth century meant that new dioceses had to be created, such as at Liverpool and Westminster. Similarly, in Scandinavia the ancient Catholic dioceses vanished under Lutheranism. In North Africa, tiny dioceses disappeared under the sands or were swept away by Islam. In the United States, some original dioceses never really developed as population centers, such as the old dioceses of Bardstown, Vincennes, Sault Ste. Marie, or Walla Walla. The tradition of "titular sees" assures that the ancient churches are always held in prayer, as the bishop celebrates Mass in its memory a few times a year. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Three Sunday, July 24, 2016 A NOTE FROM FR. NORM You may have read in the Beacon Journal that this weekend the greater Akron area is focusing on a national mental health initiative, The Campaign to Change Direction. Nearly one in every five people, or 42.5 million American adults, has a diagnosable mental health condition. Half of all lifetime cases of mental disorders begin by age 14. People too often, even by faith communities, are stigmatized and marginalized. As a priest for 42 years, I ve seen many people struggle painfully with these issues in themselves or with loved ones. Too often they tell no one out of fear of being looked down upon. At times some people of faith say Just pray, just surrender to God, just deepen your faith and you will get better. We know that faith and a deep spirituality can be a significant resource for hope and healing. However, one of the most powerful ways God works is through people showing compassion, providing wisdom, and accompanying the most vulnerable among us in getting expert counseling and community support over a lengthy period of time. We need to let people know that God is nearest to the broken not wanting to judge them but to be a source of healing love. The best way we can do that is by showing our desire to be there for individuals and families going through this heavy burden. A flier with information to become aware of the five signs that may mean someone is in emotional pain and might need help is available at the church entrances. The website www.changedirectionsummitcounty.org has much practical information and lists community resources for people and/or their family members who may need assistance. FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Jesus was praying. What a powerful example for us! He knew this was the way to stay connected to God the Father and handle all the demands being placed on Him. Jesus assures us if we put God first we will receive and find whatever we need from His infinite goodness and wisdom. But, we must make the time to stop, listen and seek God first in prayer. Pope Francis reminds us moments of family prayer and acts of devotion can be more powerful for evangelization than any catechism class or sermon. Make prayer a daily part of your family routine. KEEP PRAYING St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is often known as "the persistent mother." She watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his Christian faith. Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to God about Augustine than to Augustine about God. The mother never gave up praying for her son. Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of the Church's greatest scholars. Today's readings address the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke's Gospel, tells his disciples to "ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you" (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying. OZANAM CENTER New Hours: The Ozanam Center has changed its hours beginning in July to 9:30-12 instead of 10-2. BRING YOUR YOUR AND/OR The Knights of Columbus has been asked to organize a work detail of interested parishioners to help spread a load of mulch in the planted areas around the church and parking lot. The date for this project is Sunday, July 24, at 1 p.m. As a reminder to our St. V's middle school and high school students your volunteer work here will count toward your community service time. We would ask that you bring a garden rake, or shovel (flat or snow), and a wheelbarrow, if you have one. Let's ALL support this opportunity to beautify our Church grounds. Rain date will be Sunday, the 31st.

St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Six Sunday, July 24, 2016 JUBILEE INDULGENCE On September 1, 2015, Pope Francis issued a letter granting an Indulgence to the Faithful on the Occasion of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. In the Diocese of Cleveland all Members of the Christian Faithful who wish to seek the Jubilee Indulgence are to: Make a brief pilgrimage to the Holy Door, open at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Cleveland, Ohio, and at Our Lady of Lourdes National Shrine, at any time during the Year of Mercy, and cross over the threshold of mercy as a sign of their deep desire for true conversion; Sacramentally confess their sins; Participate in the celebration of, and receive, the Holy Eucharist with a reflection on mercy; Make a Profession of Faith; Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, Pope Francis. While the first two conditions may be fulfilled several days before or after the performance of the indulgenced work, it is fitting that Communion be received, the prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father be made, and the profession of faith be said on the same day. A single sacramental confession suffices for several plenary indulgences but receiving Communion and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father are required for each indulgence. Those who perform the spiritual and corporal works of mercy may also, by their actions, obtain the Jubilee Indulgence. The Holy Father states, Each time that one of the faithful personally performs one or more of the works of mercy, he or she shall surely obtain the Jubilee Indulgence. Hence the commitment to live by mercy so as to obtain the grace of complete and exhaustive forgiveness by the power of the love of the Father who excludes no one. The Jubilee Indulgence is thus full, the fruit of the very event which is to be celebrated and experienced with faith, hope, and charity. His Holiness, Pope Francis, has further decreed the conditions for obtaining the Jubilee Indulgence for those of the Christian Faithful for whom it is impossible to physically cross the threshold of the Holy Door, namely: The sick, people who are elderly and alone, the homebound. Those who are chronically or terminally ill, elderly, or otherwise confined by physical condition, while living with faith and joyful hope during their trials, may obtain the Jubilee Indulgence by receiving Communion or attending the Holy Mass and community prayer, even through the various forms of media. The incarcerated. Those who are living in prisons may obtain the Jubilee Indulgence in the chapels of the prisons. Directing their thoughts and prayer to the Father each time they cross the threshold of their cell will, for them, signify passage through the Holy Door, because the mercy of God is able to transform hearts and is also able to transform bars into an experience of freedom. The deceased. The Holy Father reminds us that we may gain the Jubilee Indulgence not only for ourselves, but for the deceased as well. He states:...as we remember them in the Eucharistic celebration, thus we can, in the great mystery of the Communion of Saints, pray for them, that the merciful Face of the Father free them of every remnant of fault and strongly embrace them in the unending beatitude.
