My Dear Friends, We have truly been blessed in Torrington with so many wonderful societies and clubs. Each parish had something to provide for their parishioners. Now that we are one new parish, under the patronage of St. John Paul the Great, I have been praying about what our next step will be. We have the Holy Rosary Society, the Holy Name Society, Angels and Ministers, St. John Paul the Great Women s Club, Altar Society, St. Anne/Mother Cabrini/Franciscans Societies, and St. John Paul the Great Family Life. We also have a Knights of Columbus council that is attached to the parish. There has been a discussion on whether some of these groups would continue under this new parish, or if there is a place for them in our new parish. Before we can discuss if there is a place, we first need to ask, what our purpose is and what the needs of the parish are. I do not have any plans to dissolve any society or club, but I do think it might be beneficial to have a meeting with current members and any prospective new members on what we want to do moving forward. Wednesday, November 15th, we will have a social beginning at 6:30pm and a meeting at 7pm at the St. Peter/St. Francis Cafe. There will be adoration at St. Francis Church as well so that anyone who wants to pray before the meeting they will have that opportunity. In the spirit of becoming one new parish, I am considering a new parish entity, called Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ. It will consist of fellowship, spirituality and service. It is to be centered on stewardship, with the focus on time and talent. It is not meant to replace any existing group or society. It is entirely new with a renewed energy as we move forward as the Body of Christ in Torrington. We are a work in progress, and we are only in the beginning stages right now. But with every other diocese that has had to merge and close parishes, the status quo and expect people to return to the Catholic faith. We need to move beyond the status quo and think outside the box and move from being a maintenance parish to a mission parish. Are we a parish that does things because we have always done them this way or are we willing to be a parish with a renewed sense of vibrancy and community. God bless. Fr. John As a Member of THE CHURCH THE BODY OF CHRIST Please consider this a personal invitation to come together with other members of the Corpus Christi Wednesday, November 15th 6:00pm We invite you to join us for Adoration @ St. Francis Church 6:30pm We ll begin with Wine and Cheese and/or Cider and Apple Cider Donuts @ St. Peter/St. Francis Cafe 7:00pm Fr. John will present CHURCH THE BODY OF CHRIST We re in the early planning stages... as we look to you for fresh ideas of how to inspire As we Lead others closer to Christ. How can we bring about an enthusiasm for our faith that, in living our faith in Jesus, we freely share it with others? Children have to be present to receive gift from Santa. As we are called to be good stewards of God s creation, we have decided, as a parish, to eliminate the use of Styrofoam cups completely and reduce our use of plastic as much as possible. Americans throw away 25 billion Styrofoam coffee cups every year and 2.5 million plastic beverage bottles every hour. Styrofoam takes 500 years to decompose and although the technology to recycle Styrofoam does exist, local recycling is not available, therefore Styrofoam cups that are thrown in the trash are dumped into landfills and are there to stay. Paper products are biodegradable and non-toxic to the environment. We ask you to not use any Styrofoam products. Hot/cold Paper cups have been purchased in bulk and are available at the Pastoral Center. We understand that at times personal water bottles are necessary, but we do ask you to RECYCLE and when possible fill a large water jug and use cups instead. Thank you.
