PALM SUNDAY St. John s Evangelical Lutheran Church Baraboo, WI

WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S Palm Sunday March 25, 2018 We re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Maglietto or Pastor Kuske. They would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way they can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an audio/video-equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week the most intense week of our Christian Year. Palm Sunday has been celebrated in the Christian Church since the 4th Century. 1,600 years ago believers in and around Jerusalem would retrace Jesus route from the Mount of Olives back into the city for worship. Hosanna! is the shout of praise so familiar to Palm Sunday worshipers. It literally means Save us we pray! Jesus was riding into Jerusalem to do just that. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Heavenly Father, I have come to worship you. Draw near to me in your gracious Word, and assure me of your loving kindness. Curb my wandering thoughts, that with undivided attention I may hear your voice and sing your praise. PLEASE NOTE If you are attending our 9 am worship service, please note that this service is videorecorded and will be aired on our local cable channel at 12 pm today. 1

THE RINGING OF THE BELLS THE ORDER OF SERVICE PALM PROCESSION The presiding minister and those participating in the procession gather in the back of the sanctuary. Palm branches are distributed. Stand and face the back doors as soon as the bells begin to ring. M: The grace of our Lord ( ) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. M: Dear friends in Christ, for five weeks of Lent we have been preparing for the celebration of our Lord s paschal mystery. Today we come together to begin the solemn celebration of Holy Week. Christ entered in triumph into his own city, to complete his work as our Messiah: to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us remember with devotion his entry that culminated at the empty tomb and follow him with a lively faith. United with him by Baptism, we share in his resurrection and new life. M: Let us pray. God our Father, we remember how Jesus entered Jerusalem and was welcomed as king by those who shouted Hosanna and spread their clothing and palm branches in his path. Accept our praise and listen to our prayers as we rejoice in our triumphant King, Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. C: Amen. M: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. C: Hosanna in the highest! M: Let us go forth in peace, C: in the name of the Lord. The procession begins. 2

PROCESSIONAL HYMN All Glory, Laud, and Honor Christian Worship, 131 3

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. C: (spoken) And also with you. M: Let us pray. We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path, so may we always hail him as our King and follow him with perfect confidence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: (spoken) Amen. PLEASE BE SEATED SONG Hosanna Senior Choir and Sunday School 4

THE WORD FIRST LESSON Zechariah 9:9,10 9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the war-horses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. (NIV84) 5

RESPONSE Psalm 24 The earth is the LORD S, and everything in it,* the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas* and established it upon the waters. Who may ascend the hill of the LORD?* Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart,* he will receive blessing from God his Savior. Refrain Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors,* that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory?* The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors,* that the King of glory may come in. Who is he, this King of glory?* The LORD Almighty he is the King of glory. Refrain 6

LESSON Philippians 2:5-11 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (NIV84) PLEASE STAND GOSPEL Mark 11:1-10 1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, Why are you doing this? tell him, The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly. 4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, What are you doing, untying that colt? 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest! (NIV84) PLEASE BE SEATED 7

HYMN Hosanna, Loud Hosanna Christian Worship, 130 8

SERMON Philippians 2:5-11 Christ is the Christian s Quality Model From the Crown to the Curse From the Cross to the Crown Pastor Timothy P. Kuske APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 9

THANK OFFERING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: Lord Jesus, you have taught us what it is to be humble, to be a servant. Bless us as we imitate you in your humility. C: Since you were holy in our place we are holy in your sight. That means we are declared perfect and without sin because of your blessed sacrifice. M: Since the word holy also means set apart, separate help us to set apart this Holy Week as special in our hearts and homes. C: Blessed are you, O Lord, because you have brought us from death to life. M: With humble and repentant hearts, we praise and thank you who became our substitute under the holy law, C: Blessed are you, who destroyed the works of the devil by your perfect obedience to your Father s will, M: Blessed are you, who willingly carried a cross to pay the world s debt of sin, C: Blessed are you, who lives and reigns to give us life. M: We know that the nails were not needed to hold you there; your love was enough. C: Use us, Lord, to tell the world what you have done. M: Hear us now, as we bring the concerns of our heart before your throne of grace. Special intercessions and prayers M: Prepare us for the great celebration of Easter and hear us as we join to pray... LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. 10

HYMN Ride On, Ride On, in Majesty Christian Worship, 133 11

PRAYER M: O Lord God, our heavenly Father, pour out the Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep us strong in your grace and truth, protect and comfort us in all temptation, and bestow on us your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. BLESSING M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace. C: Amen. Amen. Amen. 12
