PALM SUNDAY Saturday, March 24, :30 p.m. Sunday, March 25, :00 & 10:45 a.m. Divine Service 3 LSB pg. 184 As We Gather Palms and passion hardly seem to fit together but in Jesus they do. The palms welcomed Jesus to the triumph of suffering that paid the price of our sin, and the hosannas cried out to Him who gave His life so that we might live. There are no palms and hosannas that do not end in the cross, and there is no passion that does not lead us to faith and to rejoice in what His suffering accomplished. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Prelude & Special Music (10:45 a.m.) How Beautiful Susie Emmelman Welcome & Palm Sunday Opening Responses P: Hosanna to God the Father, Creator of heaven and earth! C: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! P: Hosanna to God the Son, who forgives us and redeems all life! C: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! P: Hosanna to the Holy Spirit, whose presence gives us power and peace! C: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! P: Let us praise our God, as we begin this Holy Week in the name of the Father, the Son T, and the Holy Spirit. Holy Gospel (Please stand) Mark 11: Now when [Jesus and the disciples] drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, Why are you doing this? say, The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately. 4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those standing there said to them, What are you doing, untying the colt? 6 And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest! L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. P: Let us pray. Most merciful God, as the people of Jerusalem, with palms in their hands, gathered to greet Your dearly beloved Son when He came into His Holy City, grant that we may ever hail Him as our King and, when He comes again, may go forth to meet Him with trusting and steadfast hearts and follow Him in the way that leads to eternal life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 1
Entrance Hymn All Glory, Laud, and Honor LSB 442 Confession & Absolution P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P: O almighty God, merciful Father, C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. 2

The Word of the Lord Old Testament (Please be seated) Behold, Your King Is Coming Zechariah 9: Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Hymn Verse Hosanna, Loud Hosanna LSB 443 4
Epistle - Introduction Unity within the Church Philippians 2:1-4 1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Hymn Verse (Please stand) Hosanna, Loud Hosanna LSB 443 Epistle - Conclusion He Humbled Himself to the Point of Death Philippians 2: Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. Children s Message (Please be seated) Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. -- Matthew 19:14 5

Apostles' Creed (Please stand) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Pastoral Greeting & Rite of Fellowship (Please be seated) (Welcome! Please add your name to the fellowship pad.) Gathering of Offerings (As an act of worship and thanksgiving, we offer to God what He has first given to us: the first and best of our lives, time, talents and financial gifts. Take joy my King in what You hear, Let it be a sweet, sweet sound in Your ear. (repeat once) Prayer of the Church & Lord's Prayer (Please stand) P: The Father demonstrated His great love for us in sending His Son to be our Savior, and so in prayer we cry out, C: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! L: Saving Lord, during this Holy Week, may we remember anew the events of the first Holy Week, rejoicing in the forgiveness Your Son won for us on the cross. In prayer we cry out, C: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! L: Lord of the Church, work in the hearts and minds of those who have wandered from Your people. May they return to You gladly hearing Your Word. In prayer we cry out, C: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! L: Almighty God, grant courage to those who proclaim Your name in places where the Gospel of Jesus is opposed. Keep them steadfast in Your Word. In prayer we cry out, C: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! P: O Lord, grant you Spirit to all those who request our prayers this day, especially ( special petitions). In prayer we cry out, C: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! L: Hear our prayers for the sake of our Savior, who suffered and died. L: Taught by our Lord and trusting His promises, we are bold to pray: C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 7
The 8:00 a.m. service continues on page 10 with the hymn. Holy Communion Jesus Christ is the Bread of Life. He says: Come, for those who eat this bread and drink this cup will never hunger or thirst, but be raised up on the Last Day (John 6). Whoever receives the Lord s Supper must be a believer in Christ (Hebrews 11:6); be sorry for their sins (Proverbs 28:13); believe that Christ offers His body and blood with the bread and wine (1 Corinthians 10:16); and be willing to forgive those who have sinned against you (Matthew 6:14-15). Come with faith in His promises to you and His presence in this holy meal. As you approach the Lord s table, please move to the cross on the center rail. Gluten-free wafers are available on the two stands at the front of the church. Worshippers with a gluten allergy may pick up a sealed packet on their way to the communion rail. Service of Holy Communion 6:30 p.m. & 10:45 a.m. The Words of Institution & the Peace of the Lord P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. 11 Sunday of the Passion Reading Mark 15 selected verses 12 And Pilate again said to the [crowd], Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews? 13 And they cried out again, Crucify him. 14 And Pilate said to them, Why, what evil has he done? But they shouted all the more, Crucify him. 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd delivered Jesus to be crucified 22 They brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull) 25 And it was the third hour when they crucified him. 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross! 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. Benediction P: The blessing of our gracious God be upon you, His love to preserve you; His T life to redeem you; His Spirit to sanctify you. May He send you forth in peace as you walk with Him through the joys and sorrows of Holy Week. Sending Hymn In Christ Alone Getty / Townend In Christ alone my hope is found; He is my light, my strength, my song; This cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand. Postlude In Christ alone, Who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied; For ev ry sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live. Join us this week for our special Holy Week worship services. Maundy Thursday (3:45 & 7:00 p.m.), Good Friday (CLS Chapel 2:15 & 7:00 p.m.), Easter Vigil (Sat. at 6:30 p.m.), and Easter Sunday (8:00 & 10:45 a.m.) with Easter Breakfast between services. 11
