St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Easter Sunday Of The Resurrection Of The Lord Dear Folks, God bless one and all on this wonderful Day of Easter. The Lord is Risen! Let us rejoice and be glad. Many thanks go out to all the folks involved in the preparation for this day. The choir has been practicing for weeks. The sacristans have risked life and limb covering (and uncovering) the statues and crucifix in the church. The ushers, readers, and servers have all been terrific in setting the preparations for the sacraments. The Youth Group s Easter Egg Hunt, always a hit as also with the blessing of the Easter Food. The week well started with the Living Stations. Fr. Moretti and the kids deserve many accolades for their tremendous presentation of the Living Stations of the Cross. All have provided us a beautiful start on Easter Season. God bless those who made it to the Box for Easter. Especially the big fish. The penitential seasons are times of many blessings that help to restore what were in our time of innocence and fortify us in our vocations in holy orders, marriage, and single life, and boost or morals and morale as a people restored in the image of Christ. Let us pray for one another. During the last week a great amount of media attention has been made on the new discoveries in the tomb of King Tut of Egypt. But little on the Tomb Jerusalem. The first focuses on the mysteries of past life of a few and the later on the mysterious future life for all. Pope Francis once offered a reflection on the importance of discoveries. We cannot live Easter without entering into the mystery. It is not something intellectual, something we only know or read about... It is more, much more! To enter into the mystery means the ability to wonder, to contemplate; the ability to listen to the silence and to hear the tiny whisper amid great silence by which God speaks to us (cf 1 Kings 19:12). To enter into the mystery demands that we not be afraid of reality: that we not be locked into ourselves, that we not flee from what we fail to understand, that we not close our eyes to problems or deny them, that we not dismiss our questions... To enter into the mystery means going beyond our own comfort zone, beyond the laziness and indifference which hold us back, and going out in search of truth, beauty and love. It is seeking a deeper meaning, an answer, and not an easy one, to the questions which challenge our faith, our fidelity and our very existence. To enter into the mystery, we need humility, the lowliness to abase ourselves, to come down from the pedestal of our I which is so proud, of our presumption; the humility not to take ourselves so seriously, recognizing who we really are: creatures with strengths and weaknesses, sinners in need of forgiveness. To enter into the mystery we need the lowliness that is powerlessness, the renunciation of our idols... in a word, we need to adore. Without adoration, we cannot enter into the mystery. The women who were Jesus disciples teach us all of this. They kept watch that night, together with Mary. And she, the Virgin Mother, helped them not to lose faith and hope. As a result, they did not remain prisoners of fear and sadness, but at the first light of dawn they went out carrying their ointments, their hearts anointed with love. They went forth and found the tomb open. And they went in. They had kept watch, they went forth and they entered into the Mystery. May we learn from them to keep watch with God and with Mary our Mother, so that we too may enter into the Mystery which leads from death to life. St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 27 March 2016 A Happy and Blessed Easter to all parishioners and to the schools of the parish! Kudos to FR. Moretti and the "Living Stations" crew for their performance on March 18th. It is a little different each year, as written by Fr. Moretti. The SJES elementary school PTO is looking for support in two upcoming fund raisers: the "Spring Spectacular-Auction and Casino Night" event at the Fauquier Springs Country Club, on Friday, April 8, from 6:30-10:30 PM. There will be a live and silent auction, door prizes, raffles, a hat contest, wine pull, cash bar ( with two complimentary drinks), hors d'oeuvres and a buffet dinner. All for $70 per ticket. Tickets are available in the SJE school office and online sjesvapto.membershiptoolkit.com. The second fundraiser is for Redskin fans and all football fans. The PTO is raffling off two Redskins season tickets with parking passes for $50 a chance. There will be only 200 raffle tickets printed. This includes 2 Pre-season games, 8 home games with parking passes to all 10 games. The best part is the seats are in a great spot! Please e-mail PTO President Jen Caballero jencaba77@gmail.com for more details and to ascertain when tickets go on sale. They are valued at between $3-5,000. Finally, many thanks to the donors who have contributed to our spring "Giving Tree" fund raiser. Our goal is $100,000 and in three weeks parishioners, businesses, and school families have already donated $8,250. You, most certainly, are a generous parish in support of our important ministry, the children. Donations can be earmarked for Scholarship, Endowment, Reading, Math Resource, Technology, Library, Textbooks, Giving Tree Memorial Fund, Science, Religious Programs, Fine Arts, Athletics/P.E., Facilities, New Desks, the Playground and other initiatives. For a donation of $500 or more the donor receives an engraved leaf to be displayed on the Giving Tree located in the elementary school lobby. School folks, have a safe and blessed Easter break, and all parishioners are in my prayers. God bless you and have a good week! Principal Fairweather We are having a Used Book Sale to benefit St. John School Library on May 21 & 22. This will be outside on the lawn across from the church. St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 27 March 2016 Are You Interested in Learning more about the Bible? Come join fellow St. John's parishioners in deeper companionship with Christ through lectio divina, "where the Word of God is so read and meditated that it becomes prayer" (Catechism, 1177). St. John the Evangelist launched the Bible Study series offered by Ascension Press in 2012. These studies are being offered again; but this time with a twist. Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends can sign up to watch the videos online and get together for discussions at any time and place they wish. The bible studies to be made available are listed below. Whenyou visit the parish website and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website. These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at 540-347-2922 x209. The first Study, started in October, was The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. The 24 lessons in The Bible Timeline guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative. In 2013, Matthew: The King and his Kingdom, another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in The Bible Timeline. The gospel of Matthew explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom **in 2014. This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon In the early summer of 2015 we offered Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. In the fall of 2015 Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. In 2016 the Bible Study group covered James: Pearls for Wise Living described as a book of wisdom. James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution. Our ministry helps individuals and families in need through our food pantry and by responding to calls for help in financial emergencies due to job loss, a health crisis or disability, or other difficulty. Our emergency financial aid can provide temporary help by contributing to the rent, utility bills or other pressing need. In many cases, however, those we serve would greatly benefit from guidance on how to set a budget, manage income and spending, or eliminate debt. We are asking a volunteer(s) willing to provide this kind of personal financial counseling on an occasional, case-by-case basis. If you or anyone you know could handle this task, please contact Jim Gannon at 540-522-4449. One need not be a professional CPA or financial counselor, but should possess good people skills and have experience in managing a family budget and personal finances with a common-sense approach. God bless you for your continued support. 540-270-6774 http://stjohntheevangelistsvdp.blogspot.com Follow us @ SVDPStJohns Easter Sunday Of The Resurrection Of The Lord Lost A crystal rosary in a burgundy suede zippered change purse. The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death. AVAILABLE NOW!
