AUGUST 12, 2018 PSALTER WEEK III From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, The question most often asked by teens to their parents is: Why must I go to Mass on weekends? This question is the teenager s version of the adult s question: Is it a sin to miss Mass on Sundays? Today s Gospel answers these questions when Jesus says: This is the bread that comes down from heaven I myself am the living bread if anyone eats this bread, he/ she lives forever We go to church for Mass because this is the only place where we can become one with Jesus, so that we receive His assurance of life eternal. We go to Mass because, as the Gospel of next Sunday shows: If you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man you have no life in you! We go to Mass because Jesus commanded us to do so: Do this in my memory! Jesus did give us the command to celebrate the Eucharist, and the apostles celebrated the anniversary of His Resurrection weekly, on the first day of the week, the day after the Sabbath. Two thousand years later, we still do; gathering at Mass is our distinguishing mark, the visible mark of us Catholics! It is not just a law to be followed, but also our deepest encounter with Jesus. Missing such an encounter is to deny our commitment to Jesus. Eucharist is the mark of us Catholics when we meet weekly to strengthen our bond of love with Jesus and among ourselves! We, Jesus people, the Church of Christ, are all united in love and determination to make our Lord reign in the world. We renew in the Eucharist our commitment to unite with the shepherds He had given us! And, by the way, this is the reason why non-catholics cannot receive communion at our Mass, because they are not united with us! It would be a lie to use the Sacrament of Unity for a fractioned, divided Christendom! Wednesday, August 15 is a Holy Day of Obligation in honor our Lady s Assumption. I still remember vividly the proclamation of the Dogma of the Assumption in St. Peter s majestic square on November 1, 1950. I thought that this was the most solemn religious occasion of the past century, until the announcement of the Second Vatican Council came nine years later. In studying Church History, I was impressed by the ancient councils of the Church, always proclaiming new Dogmas, and I also was thinking how tragic were those ancient times when popes were imprisoned or killed. But, in this past 65 years, we with white hair (or whatever little hair is left, white or otherwise ) have witnessed a Dogma proclamation, an Ecumenical Council, the shooting of a pope, a pope who reigned only for a month, one who reigned over 25 years, and one who retired for the first time in 600 years history did repeat itself! On the topic of this Dogma of the Assumption, we must remember that this is based on the old tradition about Mary s falling asleep, and being taken up to Paradise, as pre-figured in the identification of the Blessed Mother with the woman clothed with the sun in the last book of the Bible (Revelation 12). The apocryphal narrative Transitus Mariae (about 500 A.D.) gave body to this belief, as shown by the feast, which was well established at the time. Jesus did promise that He was going up to heaven to prepare a place for us, and He said, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. (John 14:3). And Mary was the first to be raised and brought to heaven. On November 1, 1950, Pius XII solemnly declared, as a Catholic Dogma, that Mary was assumed into heaven, body and soul, closing Ex Cathedra the long debate, which raged in Christendom over the Assumption. We do know that for 1600 years the Church celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, and for a thousand years it was a Holy Day of Obligation. Because the Holy Spirit guides the Church, it would have been absurd to believe that the Church could have erred for centuries in such an important truth! So that, even if the Bible is silent on this matter, we firmly believe that Mary is joyfully united, body and soul, with the risen Lord among the glory of the angels and saints! And this Dogma gives joy for all of us, because Mary is our Mother and, as a good Mother, certainly she would want to have us join her in Paradise, and she will not let the devil snatch us from her hands in our last moments of life. Some people are concerned and confused still about mortal and venial sin, as in: Is it a mortal sin to miss Holy Mass on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation? The Magisterium of Our Mother Church can tell us which conditions of our actions result in a mortal sin: 1. Full knowledge and awareness of our actions; 2. Full will to offend God; and 3. Serious matter, with severe consequences of our actions. Obviously the first two conditions are easily assessed. The difficulty is in finding the seriousness of our actions, and this is where the Catechism will help us. Probably the more accurate question would be: Is attending Mass on weekends and Holy Days a serious obligation? And the Catechism answer is yes, which means that only a serious reason can excuse us from concelebrating Mass with the priests, such as, illness, traveling where no Mass is available, distance from church, weather conditions, babies or sick people at home and so forth and so on. I hope this brief explanation will help you all! Our St. Martha School opens its doors tomorrow, August 13. Please pray for the staff and children so that these pupils may be well formed as good citizens and excellent disciples of Christ. The St. Martha School will continue to have the children attend Mass in the Deacon Wren Chapel every day (Monday through Friday) at 1:55 p.m., starting after Labor Day weekend. However, there will be NO 1:55 p.m. Mass during the week when the full school attends Mass in St. Anne s Hall at 11:15 a.m. on all First Fridays and other special holidays, e.g. Ash Wednesday. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Jan, John & Jerry Deacons Bill, Patrick & Robert and Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence & Sister Cathy

19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Eucharist Can you find time to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion? It is a fulfilling and rewarding ministry! We are in need of ministers to bring communion to patients at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. If interested, please contact Calvin Kreider at 928-6995 DIOCESE OF VENICE IN FLORIDA Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Church in Africa is growing rapidly! However, too often there are not enough local pastoral resources to support people in their faith. In Malawi, for example, young people comprise nearly two-thirds of the population. The Church there reflects this youthful face as well but does not have enough staff or ministers to reach these young Catholics and help them grow in their faith. Without support, young people run the risk of falling away from the Church. Your generosity to the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa can make it possible for the Catholic Church in Malawi to train leaders to connect with and guide the young people. These young people will feel the extended hand of God because of your generous contributions. Catholic youth of Malawi, through your help, will become a powerful force for good and new messengers of the Gospel, develop spiritually and grow in their Catholic identity. The Collection for Solidarity with the Church in Africa will be taken up the weekend of August 11 and 12, 2018. When you contribute to the Collection for Solidarity with the Church in Africa, you are helping people across the African continent grow closer to Christ and to the Church. I take this opportunity to extend to you my continued consideration and my prayers! Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
