Not only will Christianity be revolutionized, Christians themselves will become empowered to revolutionize the world. Minister Heureuse Kaj Milosi is from Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo where she is a member of the Central Congo Annual Conference. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Africa University, Mutare, Zimbabwe. While in college, she served as a resident manager and devoted herself to a campus ministry program through which, she learned to put her Christian faith into action. After college, Minister Kaj served as a young adult missionary with the United Methodist Church General Board of Global Ministries in Japan for two years; working with women and children victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. Kaj s mission service was such a transformative experience. After her mission in Japan, she served as a trainer for the young adult missionaries class 2016-2018. Minister Kaj is a third-year student working on her Master of Divinity degree in the Missional Fellow Program at Wesley Theological Seminary. She served as an intern at Women s Alliance for Theology, Ethics, and Ritual, in Silver Spring. Now Minister Kaj has joined us this academic year as a seminary student fulfilling Wesley s Practice in Mission and Ministry (Field Education) requirements at our congregation. She will be active in The Bridge, the morning worship services, faith formation ministries, and administrative ministries. Minister Kaj is married to Rev. Asbury United Methodist Church October 2018 Health Ministry Newsletter National Suicide Prevention Month Forty-five thousand people died by suicide last year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the United States of America. Five Myths about Suicide: Suicide only affects individuals with a mental condition. Fifty-four percent of suicide victims had no diagnosis of mental illness when they killed themselves. Once an individual is suicidal, he always will be suicidal. The act of suicide is an attempt to control or eliminate deep painful emotions caused by painful situations (sexual abuse, rejection, devastating illness or recent or impending crises). Once these thoughts dissipate so will the suicide indentions. Most suicide happen suddenly without warning! Warning signs precede most suicides. People who die by suicide are selfish and take the easy way out most suicide victims do so because they want to end their suffering, which may be either mental illness (often depression) or a very difficult life situation. Talking about suicide will lead to and encourage suicide. (Talking about suicide reduces the stigma and may cause individuals to seek help and rethink their situation.) Risk Factors for Suicide: A family history Substance abuse (drugs, alcohol) Intoxication Access to firearms A serious or chronic medical illness A history of trauma or abuse Prolonged stress Isolation Age people under 24 (especially in the LGBT population) or over 65 A recent tragedy or loss Agitation or sleep deprivation Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) and transgender population (40% transgender person have made suicide attempts!!) 13

Warning Signs of Suicide: Threats I wish I wasn t here. I want to kill myself. Alcohol or drug use Aggressive behavior Suicidal withdrawal Dramatic mood swings Talking, writing or thinking about death Impulsive or reckless behavior Imminent Danger Signs: Putting their affairs in order and giving away their possessions Saying goodbye to friends and family Mood shifts from despair to calm Planning to buy, steal or borrow tools for suicide e.g. prescription medication or firearms Prevention and Treatment: Encourage the of mental health professionals psychotherapy, mental health medications Remove guns, knives or stockpiled pills Talk openly and honestly about suicide Ask how can you be helpful Be sympathetic Listen Show compassion Suicide Hotline 1-800-272-TALK (8255) Suicide now claims more lives than automobile accidents!
