From The Senior Pastor s Desk June 2018 Word for the Month: AUDACITY Scripture of the Month: James 1-5 Thought for the Month: Tears We Cannot Stop is the book that all Americans who care about the current and long-burning crisis in race relations will want to read. As the country grapples with racist division at a level not seen since the 1960s, one man's voice soars above the rest with conviction and compassion. In his 2016 New York Times op-ed piece "Death in Black and White," Michael Eric Dyson moved a nation. Now he continues to speak out in Tears We Cannot Stop a provocative and deeply personal call for change. Dyson argues that if we are to make real racial progress we must face difficult truths, including being honest about how black grievance has been ignored, dismissed, or discounted. 12 THE NEHEMIAH FUND Thank you for your contributions to The Nehemiah Fund of Asbury United Methodist Church. The Nehemiah Fund provides emergency financial assistance to members of Asbury United Methodist Church and their immediate families who temporarily need help in meeting housing, nutritional, medical, security, or other essentials of daily living. In rare cases, the Fund may be accessed for burial assistance for members of Asbury United Methodist Church. The Fund may also be used to support needs of members of the community at large. The Fund is maintained by general and undesignated offerings made during the Communion offering on the first Sunday of each month or other period when an offering is taken associated with a Communion service at Asbury United Methodist Church. Requests for assistance are held in confidence and administered by our Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Ianther Mills. 14 Health Ministry Newsletter June 2018 National Men s Health Month There is a silent Health crisis in America on average American men live sicker and die younger than American Women. Men Health Facts: 1. Men die at higher rates than women from nine of the top ten causes of death. 2. Men are the victims of 92% of workplace deaths. 3. Men now die almost five years younger than women. 4. Black men are victim of homicide 6 times as often than white men and 5 times as often as Black women. 5. Men commit suicide 6 times as often as women. 6. Men have fewer infections fighting T cells and have weaker immune system than women. 7. By the age of 100 women outnumber men eight to one. 8. A higher percentage of men than women have no health insurance coverage. 9. The only disease in the top ten killers of Americans, that woman die more often than men is Alzheimer s disease. 10. Twice as many men die of heart failure than women. Prevention: Women are 100% more likely to visit the doctor for annual examinations and for preventive services than men. For those members who opted out of receiving giving envelopes, we will continue to accept your tithes and offerings in the following ways: Monthly check or weekly checks with your envelope number in the memo line. These may be put in the offering baskets or mailed to the finance office. If you do not remember your envelope number, we can find you in the system. Use the e-giving option on the church website. Make your contributions using credit/debit cards during service. Ushers can provide the credit card processor for your convenience. 15 COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT WELL DONE!!! Children Receiving Dresses at Grace Orphanage Center, March 2018, Haiti My sincere appreciation is extended to the many volunteers who participated in the successful pillow case dress- making project for Haitian children. I am also very grateful for the missionary groups from Campbell AME Church and Metropolitan Baptist Church who saw that the clothing reached its destination. In the past twelve months, the following volunteers contributed pillow cases and/or fabric as well as their time, energy and talent to creating 175 dresses and pants for the children in Haiti: Joyce Jones, Scarlett Branch, Barbara Matthews, Gloria Hutchins, Valerie Coleman, Claudia Thompson, Rev.
