From the Senior Pastor s Desk November 2017 Word for the Month: JOY Scripture of the Month: James 1:2-8 Thought for the Month: Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships or, as they would say, because of them they are two of the most joyful people on the planet. In this unique collaboration, the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu offer us the reflection of real lives filled with pain and turmoil in the midst of which they have been able to discover a level of peace, of courage, and of joy to which we can all aspire in our own lives. 8 Sunday, November 12 Rev. Dr. Rodney Smothers Guest Preacher Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. GIFTS & TALENTS ASSESSMENT Discover & Use Your Gifts at Asbury UMC ANGEL TREE is back! This ministry, coordinated by Asbury UMW, allows our congregation to share the love of Christ during the Christmas season and through-out the year with children whose parent(s) are incarcerated. Asburyans and friends who have participated in this program found it to be a very rewarding experience. ANGEL TREE SUNDAY is November 12. This is the day that you may select your Angel(s) and purchase gifts from their wish list. Look for the Christmas tree with Angels in the library. Each child will receive a minimum of two gifts, a toy or fun item and an article of clothing. Each gift should be approximately $20 in value. Volunteers are available to shop on your behalf., we wil be happy to help. RETURN GIFTS TO G-1 on December 3. Place unwrapped gifts in a gift bag if possible. It is very important that each gift is labeled with the child s first name and his/her code number. Drop-off gifts in G-1 after both services. Don t forget to take the Gift Assessment survey to determine your Gifts Pro ile. Next, ill out the enclosed 2018 Time & Talent Commitment Form and return it on Consecration Sunday, November 12. 14 Health Ministry News November 2017 NATIONAL ALZHEIMER S AWARENESS MONTH Alzheimer s disease is a disease of the brain which affects one in every two families. It is the 6 th leading cause of death in America. Nearly 70% of all dementia is caused by Alzheimer s disease world wide. Dementia involves forgetfulness which limits social abilities and impairs the activities of daily living. Seven Facts: 1. We generally detect Alzheimer s at the end of the disease process. 2. Memory loss is not a part of normal aging. 3. Current Alzheimer s drugs are probably more effective than you think, (often ineffective because we are treating end stage disease). 4. Alzheimer s disease can be treated because we have no cure does not mean there is no treatment. 5. The Alzheimer s disease pipeline is promising. Better treatments are in progress (and on the way). 6. In taking care of your heart the following will help you have good health: Exercise, meditation (each for 30 minutes daily, 5 days a week); better control of cholesterol; BP; and avoid obesity. This will decrease the likelihood of cognitive (brain function) decline; and it will keep your brain healthy. 7. Managing risk factors may delay or prevent cognitive problems later in life such as controlling diabetes, preventing head injuries, eating more fruits and vegetables, and less red meat, exercise and meditation as above (150 minutes each week). This along with a better understanding of Alzheimer s disease is important to us all. Early Warning Signs of Alzheimer s disease: 1. Taste and scent changes 2. Personality changes mood swings, increased inevitability, act differently, withdrawal from society 3. Anti Social Behavior 4. Memory Loss short term memory is the first to go, but long term loss will follow 5. Inability to plan 6. A loss of productivity at home or at work 7. Effective problem solving skills are lost Since Alzheimer s disease is a progressive disease that destroys memory and other important brain (mental) functions, this emphasizes the importance of an early diagnosis and supportive services as soon as possible in order to prevent brain cell degeneration and death. The memory loss of Alzheimer s may manifest itself in the following ways by repeating statements and questions over and over, by forgetting conversations, routinely misplacing possessions, and getting lost in familiar locations, by forgetting names of family members, and by having difficulty in finding the right words to say. The causes of Alzheimer s disease are unknown, but may be genetic (5% of the time). An MRI (special x ray) of the brain may reveal Beta Amyloid protein clumps or plagues and Tau proteins, these are the substances which kill the brain cells. Risk factors: 1. Age over 65, rarely as early as the 30s 2. Genetic Parent or sibling with Alzheimer s disease 3. Downs Syndrome 4. Sex women more than men (maybe because they live longer) 5. Past head trauma Lifestyles, and other factors, which may contribute to the development of Alzheimer s disease are the following: 1. Lack of exercise 2. Obesity 3. Smoking or exposure to second hand smoking 4. High blood pressure 5. High cholesterol 6. Poorly controlled diabetes 7. A diet lacking fruits or vegetables Prevention there is no proven prevention. But a reduction of the risk factors previously mentioned may be helpful. Experts recommend that we stay active physically, mentally, and socially. Best advice If early symptom present any early diagnosis and early treatment are highly recommended. 14
