A NOTE FROM FATHER Dear Parishioners, Welcome to all visitors who are here for the St. Peter Parish Festival. I hope that the day is lovely, the food delicious, and the hospitality warm and inviting. Our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Kathy Mettler, Bobby Weber, Donna Frey, and Laurie (Zallek) Knight. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace. In the coming months, we will be publishing stewardship articles in the bulletin. I found a great starter document with various aspects on stewardship, and so watch for that next week. As we discussed this at the Area Pastoral Council, it was decided that such a project would be good. Why focus on stewardship? In part, we intend to focus on stewardship to form us in a proper understanding of what it is and what it is not. We need to be formed as stewards, in all aspects of our lives, and at all times. Too often, we might reduce stewardship to a project or a yearly activity. With the Diocesan Ministries Appeal about to gear up again, our temptation might be to suggest that our participation in that project is stewardship, and all that is required. As parishes, we are really great at giving to a need, for which I am thankful. We have lots of givers and gifts to particular causes or with particular concerns. In the past, parishes used to publish what was nicknamed sin-sheets in which each donor was named and the amount they gave. This lead to sin of pride and condemnation: some gave because of pride, others condemned how little some gave. Thankfully, those days are gone, but the attitude might remain. But none of this is stewardship in the truest sense. Stewardship is about recognizing that God has blessed us with so much, and that we are called by Him to return in thanksgiving a portion of what He has given for the good of others. So when we give, we give faithfully, freely, fully, and fruitfully! We give of our time (volunteering and prayer), talent, and treasure according to our state in life. We give generously in proportion to what we have, not to what others give. A steward gives because he or she recognizes it is not enough to give to a need, but rather that they have a need to give! ~ In Christ, Fr. Todd JOHN IRELAND/LITTLE ANGELS NEWS We are a Catholic community welcoming students of all faiths, devoted to Gospel Values, Academic Excellence, and Christian Service. www.churchofstpeter.org/ji 507.931.2810 We are a school readiness program focused on faith and service which nurtures the whole child embracing individual talents and abilities in a welcoming, caring, and safe environment. www.churchofstpeter.org/ji 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time 3
