To be good stewards of the gift of life obliges us to proclaim the Gospel in word and deed when it comes to preserving the sanctity of life. What is most important for good stewards is to remain faithful to prayer and to renew this month a firm resolve to proclaim a culture of life and an end to the killing and degradation of human beings, especially those who are vulnerable due to their age, health or dependency, and to work to rid our culture of the notion that humans are simply part of a disposable society. Second Collection The second collection for next weekend is the Diocesan Assessment. Please be as generous as your means allow. Thank you! A fresh perspective on the Sunday readings by Rev. William J. Reilly 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 16, 2016 Beloved. Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it and that from infancy you have known the sacred scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. How well do I know the scriptures? I am aware of many events in the life of Christ. I am aware of His teaching, His miracles, His dying and rising. Yes, I know some important things found in the bible. Most of us have copies of the bible in our homes. Many record their family histories, of sacraments celebrated. A family history accompanies the history of salvation. However for many, the book has become dusty and our faith rusty. Paul encourages Timothy reminding him that it is the word inspired by God to do four things teach, defend, correct and train to be competent and equipped for good work. I wonder where I can join a bible study group? I need a book to help me understand the scriptures. I want to accept this important recommendation Paul gave to Timothy. I need to know the scriptures. St. Jerome, who translated the scriptures into Latin, teaches that if we do not know the scriptures, we do not know Christ. Let s begin The bible is allergic to dust, I polish my knowledge to get rid of the rust. Readings for the week 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday Ex 17:8-13; 2 Tm 3:14 4:2; Lk 18:1-8 Monday Eph 2:1-10; Lk 12:13-21 Tuesday 2 Tm 4:10-17b; Lk 10:1-9 Wednesday Eph 3:2-12; Lk 12:39-48 Thursday Eph 3:14-21; Lk 12:49-53 Friday Eph 4:1-6; Lk 12:54-59 Saturday Eph 4:7-16; Lk 13:1-9 HIS WORD TODAY Preparing for next Sunday 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18 God is just and does not show favoritism, but hears the prayers of everyone. Anyone who serves God, no matter how lowly his position here on earth, will be heard and answered. Second Reading: 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 Paul writes to Timothy that he thinks his mission is near the end, and he is glad his faith is still strong. Paul hopes that all nations will hear the gospel. But, if he is executed as he anticipates, he is sure he will live forever in heaven. Gospel: Luke 18:9-14 Jesus tells a parable about a Pharisee who went to the temple, and offered up a prayer of thanks because he was not a sinner like the tax collector who was also there to pray. The tax collector was far more humble, acknowledging his sins, and asking forgiveness for them. Jesus said the tax collector's prayer would be heard because, "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, while he who humbles himself will be exalted." be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient... 2 Timothy 4:2 It is not always convenient to be a good steward, especially when all the temptations of our busy and materialistic world get in the way. Now add our own pride and ego into the equation and living a stewardship lifestyle may be downright uncomfortable! Remember, God didn t call us to be comfortable. He called us to be faithful.
