September 2, 2018 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B This week we resume our reflections on the Liturgy, since we took a break to talk specifically about the Eucharist, in conjunction with the Gospel readings being taken from Jesus Bread of Life Discourse the past five weeks. The Liturgy is transcendental, or other worldly, and that is what we will reflect on this week. Anything that is transcendental is something that goes beyond or outside of ourselves. The Liturgy in a very real way takes us out of this world, so by nature it is transcendental. How do we know this? What is the evidence? There are visible clues to help point us to this. One is the clothes that are worn by the priests and other ministers. What is worn during Mass are made specifically to be worn there. We don t see people wearing similar stuff outside of church. You will never see me wearing those clothes at Wal-Mart. So the attire is different. Music played and sung, as well as responses, are different too. No one says to another, The Lord be with you, when trying to make conversation. And traditional songs that are sung are not typically heard on the radio. Even some of the instruments played, particularly the organ, are usually heard only in church. So there are things that are reserved for Mass. The Liturgy is to take us out of this world, spiritually, and connect us to another world. What is visible is brought into what is invisible. What is earthly is transported into what is heavenly. All of this takes place during Mass. Why does the opening procession always take place from the back of church? This action is to communicate to us that we are leaving the world and entering heaven. The back of church represents the world, the front of church, the sanctuary in particular, represents heaven. If there is a place that we can confidently say is heaven on earth it is the sanctuary of a Catholic Church, which represents Heaven, and contains the real presence of God, which is the Eucharist reserved inside the tabernacle. By its nature the Mass is transcendental. The more Mass is celebrated in such a way that this is known and felt, the more it is doing it s job. The more this transcendental aspect of the Mass is less known and felt, the more it falls short of what it is trying to accomplish. One of the things that the Mass attempts to accomplish is for heaven and earth to embrace each other, for God and man to come together in an intimate expression of love, for Bridegroom and Bride to communicate their spousal love to each other. This is one of the ends of Mass. The more the celebrant facilitates this, the more the altar servers serve conscious of this, the more the musicians and other ministers actively work towards this, the more those in the pews feel heaven, and the more exciting the Mass becomes to us.
