Up un l this revised rite, the general prac ce was to include small relics of saints in an altar stone, a slab of marble that was normally set in the altar itself. Today s rite states a clear preference for martyr, and for a substan al part of the body, in accord with our tradi on s desire for substan al symbols. Martyr, of course, means witness in Greek, and was the tle given early on to the people who by their death imaged the death of Christ. From the beginning, there has never been a shortage of such people, although it took a while for the Church to develop a process to declare someone a martyr. Saint Augus ne tells how it was done in the fi h century. By then, popular opinion didn t count as much as an official tribunal set up by the bishop of the place where the martyr suffered. A er the inquiry established that the person did indeed die for the faith, a metropolitan bishop had to ra fy the decision before a shrine could be built or an altar set up over the martyr s tomb. For the most part, the honor paid to a martyr (called a cult ) was restricted to that diocese, although the fame of some heroes spread so much that they were celebrated elsewhere. The age of the martyrs is now, and more people died for the faith in the twen eth century than ever before, witnessing to Christ to the end. Their sacrifice remains the seed of the Church. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. THE HIGHEST LAW F rom me to me, newspapers and magazines will offer, as an item of filler, various laws that are s ll on the books but seem silly to us in our day and age. In one California city, it is illegal to have two indoor bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious commodity when the law was wri en, is now readily available, so the law seems silly. But the human value of protec ng and preserving precious resources is s ll around, evident in many conserva on laws that seem sensible to us. So it is with the laws of religious tradi on. What Jesus scorns today is others a tude toward ritual laws, an a tude that becomes nearly idolatrous when laws are observed for their own sake. Jesus teaches that observa on of external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems of our internal disposi on toward the will of God. Our whole lives must follow the one ul mate law of God: to love God completely and to love neighbor en rely. Roman Catholicism is a tradi on rich with customs, tradi ons, and even laws. As we con nue to listen to the voice of Christ, we must always look into our own hearts and underneath our ritual prac ces to make sure that love of God and love of neighbor are what we prize above all. Dear Parishioners, The theme of this year s Priests Re rement and Benefits Collec on is Celebra ng the Celebrants. In reflec ng on our own parish, I truly celebrate the ways that re red Fathers are s ll serving here when needed. I also see how my brother priests con nue to live their voca on in their re rement. In order to afford well deserved re rement benefits for our priests, the diocese has an annual assessed collec on for Priests Re rement and Benefits. More informa on about this collec on can be found in the August 31 st issue of the Catholic News Herald. A le er from Bishop Jugis along with a brochure should arrive in your mail early in September. This collec on provides funds for both diocesan and religious order priests re rement plans and the health benefits plan for diocesan priests when they re re. It ensures that funds will be available in the future when our currently ac ve priests are ready to re re. The diocesan goal this year is $1,900,000. Our parish has been assessed 3.5% of our annual offertory income. This is a second collec on that will be taken at all Masses on the weekend of September 15/16. I am asking for your assistance to meet our assessment through a generous contribu on to this collec on. This is your opportunity to show your gra tude to all of those priests who have served this parish those who are s ll ac ve in ministry and those who are now re red and living their voca on in other se ngs. I ask, too, that you keep me and all of our priests in your prayers each day, and be assured of our prayers for you. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Pastor Adrian Porras This Labor Day...
