TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION T oday we have a modern feast, less than a century old, and placed at the very end of the liturgical cycle of Sundays only in In 1925, the world was in a sorry state from the vantage point of Pope Pius XI. The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Chris an dynas es had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recogni on of the kingship of Christ. Crea ng this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today s world as well. In 1969 it seemed fi ng to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfec on of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. Ma hew 25:35 CHRIST, KING OF ALL O n this, the final Sunday of the liturgical year, we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only king over all seasons, all peoples, and all of crea on. At the end of me as we know it, Christ s work of restoring all things to unity and harmony with their Creator God will be completed. This Sunday, when we claim Christ as both our Shepherd and our King, we recognize our own calling to par cipate in Christ s saving work by caring for those whom Jesus calls the least ones (Ma hew 25:45). Society of St. Vincent de Paul Last Saturday we kicked off our Holiday Food Boxes by providing 71 families the necessi es for a holiday feast. Families consis ng of parents, grandparents, and children will enjoy a holiday meal together, as we all will. So many hands were involved in making this happen. Many thanks to Simeon's Youth Group who decorated the boxes. They were all covered in orange paper with original and a rac ve drawings and designs on them. We emp ed and sorted the many grocery bags that you had filled to the brim with the non food items that went in the boxes. We thank Ingles for both the grocery bags that you filled and the milk crate boxes that we used to pack the Holiday Food Boxes. Your financial dona ons via checks and cash were used to purchase the turkeys, oleo, eggs, and milk. The Pantry Crew worked over me last week to stage the items for packing in the boxes. Then, other SVdP members came in on Friday to pack the boxes, so that they were ready to give out on Saturday morning. We arrived at the church about 7:30 am on Saturday to get ready for the distribu on, and to add the fresh items to the boxes. Everyone went home exhausted but glad that we have helped those in need and given them a bit of cheer this holiday season. Many thanks to all of you for your support, and we hope your Thanksgiving was blessed! We were also blessed to have non parishioners from the community come to take advantage of the many bargains and unique items. We also wanted to say a special Thank You to the singers from the children of the Angelus Co Op Choir. They were so good and truly enjoyed by everyone, and we are very happy that they came. Thanks also for a sizeable anonymous dona on from a couple that supplemented the proceeds from the Bazaar. In total, we raised more than $3000 towards improving our picnic area. There were a variety of booths, including the following: Children's booth, White Elephant, Country Store, Knit & Crocheted items, and Collec bles. Hungry shoppers took advantage of the Bakery & Sweet Shop, and the Breakfast & Lunch menu. The Raffle is always a popular part of the Bazaar. We sold ckets at Masses for a couple of weekends before the day of the Bazaar as well as at the Bazaar.
